Book excerpt: This report concludes an evaluation of expedient methodology for identifying and qualitatively classifying potentially expansive soils. Seventeen published techniques used for identification/classification purposes were reviewed and evaluated using data collected from an extensive laboratory testing program. A definition of potential swell that is more consistent with field simulation requirements and more representative of in situ volume change behavior is presented. The results of the evaluation of published techniques reveal that the best techniques and thus the best indicators of potential swell are the liquid limit and plasticity index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your guide to the design and construction of foundations on expansive soils Foundation Engineering for Expansive Soils fills a significant gap in the current literature by presenting coverage of the design and construction of foundations for expansive soils. Written by an expert author team with nearly 70 years of combined industry experience, this important new work is the only modern guide to the subject, describing proven methods for identifying and analyzing expansive soils and developing foundation designs appropriate for specific locations. Expansive soils are found worldwide and are the leading cause of damage to structural roads. The primary problem that arises with regard to expansive soils is that deformations are significantly greater than in non-expansive soils and the size and direction of the deformations are difficult to predict. Now, Foundation Engineering for Expansive Soils gives engineers and contractors coverage of this subject from a design perspective, rather than a theoretical one. Plus, they'll have access to case studies covering the design and construction of foundations on expansive salts from both commercial and residential projects. Provides a succinct introduction to the basics of expansive soils and their threats Includes information on both shallow and deep foundation design Profiles soil remediation techniques, backed-up with numerous case studies Covers the most commonly used laboratory tests and site investigation techniques used for establishing the physical properties of expansive soils If you're a practicing civil engineer, geotechnical engineer or contractor, geologist, structural engineer, or an upper-level undergraduate or graduate student of one of these disciplines, Foundation Engineering for Expansive Soils is a must-have addition to your library of resources.

Book excerpt: Essential technical information for building on expansive soils--complete with practical, proven design methods. Expansive Soils examines factors that influence the design offoundations and pavements built on expansive soils, and exploreskey design procedures and remedial measures that address thesefactors effectively. Backed by the authors' extensive research andexperience --including interviews with practicing engineers workingwith expansive soils --this authoritative volume is an importantreference text for geotechnical and foundation engineers, geologists, construction professionals, and students. Easy to understand and apply, Expansive Soils contains: * Site investigation techniques for identification andclassification of expansive soils * Heave prediction methods using different types of data --withrigorous treatment of soil suction theory and measurement, oedometer tests, and more * Alternative design procedures for drilled pier and slab-on-gradefoundations, highway and airfield pavements * Treatment and chemical stabilization techniques --including salttreatment; moisture barriers; lime and cement stabilization; andother procedures * Remedial measures such as drainage control, and removal withreplacement and compaction control * Sample problems illustrating practical applications.

Book excerpt: Every engineering structure, whether it's a building, bridge or road, is affected by the ground on which it is built. Geology is of fundamental importance when deciding on the location and design of all engineering works, and it is essential that engineers have a basic knowledge of the subject. Engineering Geology introduces the fundamentals of the discipline and ensures that engineers have a clear understanding of the processes at work, and how they will impact on what is to be built. Core areas such as stratigraphy, rock types, structures and geological processes are explained, and put in context. The basics of soil mechanics and the links between groundwater conditions and underlying geology are introduced. As well as the theoretical knowledge necessary, Professor Bell introduces the techniques that engineers will need to learn about and understand the geological conditions in which they intend to build. Site investigation techniques are detailed, and the risks and risk avoidance methods for dealing with different conditions are explained. * Accessible introduction to geology for engineers * Key points illustrated with diagrams and photographs * Teaches the impact of geology on the planning and design of structures

Book excerpt: This document was written as a resource for participants in a short course covering the topic of construction and design of drilled shaft foundations for bridges and other structures. It is the second edition of a Federal Highway Administration workbook on construction and design of drilled shafts. The first edition was written in 1988 (FHWA-SA-HI-88-042). While introductory material from the 1988 edition was retained, the emphasis in this document is on providing relatively comprehensive information for engineers who already have some experience with drilled shaft construction and/or design. The initial chapters cover an overview of the characteristics of drilled shafts, site investigations for drilled shafts (to collect information for both construction and design), and details of drilled shaft construction. These chapters are followed by several chapters on the design of drilled shafts in soil and rock for both axial and lateral loading, with examples. Both allowable stress design and load and resistance factor design principles are addressed. Details of design calculations procedures are provided in the appendices.
