Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Chronological New Testament (Text of the American Standard Revision): With Introductory Historical Notes and Outlines The exact chronology of all the books is not observed for Obvious rea sons. For instance, the Four Gospels all doubtless belong to a period after the Epistle Of James and some of Paul's Epistles. The Gospels, it should be remembered, are an interpretation Of the facts of Christ's life, in the light of much Of the Apostolic history and with some of the Apostolic literature already produced. A solid historical basis is thus easily reached in studying the foundations of Christianity which rein forces the Gospels. But as the Gospels deal with facts that antedate the Apostolic history, they must in historical study clearly be read before that history. Again, the Acts of the Apostles was undoubtedly written after many of the books Of the New Testament had appeared. And yet, since much of the story Of Acts antedates those books, the Acts must appear before the Apostolic Epistles. Where it is possible in con nection With the Epistles, mention will be made Of the part of Acts with which it corresponds. The effort has been not to follow a blind rule, but to arrange the books in such a way as to allow them to throw light on each other and in accordance with the known or probable historical facts, so that one can read in the Scripture text the story of the origin of Christianity and its actual development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essay on the Right Estimation of Manuscript Evidence: In the d104 of the New Testament The present attempt to revise and improve our English Bible is mixed up inseparably with a further question, What is the true original d104 of the New Testament, on which any such revision has to be based? It seems unfortunate that this more important question should be raised informally and indirectly in the course of an attempt to improve our English version, instead of being looked upon as a distinct preliminary, which requires to be first settled on definite principles, before the other work can be pursued with full prospect of success. A vast amount of critical material, both in Manuscripts and Versions of the New Testament, has been amassed by the labour of collators and scholars through the last hundred years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of New Testament History The present is a companion volume to the Outlines of Jewish History published some months ago. It deals with the historical data supplied by the inspired writings of the New Testament, in exactly the same manner as the pre ceding work did with the various events recorded in the sacred books of the Old Testament. In both volumes the writer has pursued the same purpose and followed the same methods. Both works have been prepared for the special use of theological students, not, however, without the hope that they may prove serviceable to a much larger number of readers, such as teachers of Bible history in Sunday-schools, colleges, academies, and the like. In neither volume has it been the aim of the writer to supply a substitute for the Bible itself, but rather a help towards a more careful perusal of the inspired record. With this purpose in view, he has set forth such results of modern investigation as may render the sacred narrative more intelligible and attractive. Many of the difficulties which are daily being raised on historical grounds are also touched upon, and the biblical student is supplied with constant references to further sources of in formation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Early History of the Vulgate Gospels This essay does not aim at any form of completeness, and is published only in the hope that it may be found suggestive. Having no opportunity of working new material, I have tried to do my best with the riches amassed by Bishop Wordsworth and the late M. Samuel Berger. I know the result must be 'full of errors but I hope the search for these will lead others to further stages on the same road. More comprehensive and more certain conclusions will be reached when not only the whole New Testament but the Old Testament too have been critically edited from a large number of manuscripts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the New Testament Times, Vol. 2: The Time of the Apostles With regard to the war which actually visited Galilee, this religious theory of its causes was but the pragmatic view of pious souls. The aristocracy of the temple in Jerusalem were well aware that the Arabian king had seized the long-looked-for opportunity of taking revenge on Antipas for the repudiation Of his daughter and the doubly adulterous marriage with Herodias. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the New Testament Times, Vol. 1: The Time of Jesus The History of the New Testament Times is now presented to the reader in a revised and enlarged edition. The latter part of the work, especially, has at the same time been much altered under the in uence of Dr. Keim's Jesus of Nazara. In the plan of the book nothing has been altered. The aim in view is still to present a history of the development of culture in the times of Jesus and the writers of the New Testa ment, so far as this development had a direct in uence upon the rise of Christianity; and then to give the history of this rise itself, so far as it can be treated as an Objective history, and not as a subjective religious process. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Inspiration of the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament TH E inspiration of the holy scriptures is a subject, on which it is of great importance to form just and accurate ideas. If they be the compositions of men, who, though honest, and upon the whole well informed, were under no infallible assistance and direction, they are not entitled to the same reverence, as if they had been dictated by the Spirit of God nor can we read them with the same confidence in their counsels and instructions. Their con tents must be subjected to a strict examina tion, and the truth of their doctrines must be ascertained by other evidence than the author ity of the writers, before we can yield to them a' rational assent. It is evident that such a view of the' scriptures would involve us in endless 1nquiries and disputations, and by giv mg scope to unrestrained speculation, would.
