Aepinus's Tenuimen theoriae electricilatis el magnetismi was one of the outstanding achievements of eighteenth-century physics. Its rigorous mathematical investigation of electricity and magnetism was an important and innovative departure from the primarily qualitative and nonmathematical treatments that preceded it. P. J. Connor's translation of the original Latin edition is the first to appear in any western European language, and the introductory monograph and notes by R. W. Home provide a far more definitive account of Aepinus's life and work than has heretofore been attempted. Originally published in 1979. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book excerpt: This gives comprehensive coverage of the essential differential equations students they are likely to encounter in solving engineering and mechanics problems across the field -- alongside a more advance volume on applications. This first volume covers a very broad range of theories related to solving differential equations, mathematical preliminaries, ODE (n-th order and system of 1st order ODE in matrix form), PDE (1st order, 2nd, and higher order including wave, diffusion, potential, biharmonic equations and more). Plus more advanced topics such as Green’s function method, integral and integro-differential equations, asymptotic expansion and perturbation, calculus of variations, variational and related methods, finite difference and numerical methods. All readers who are concerned with and interested in engineering mechanics problems, climate change, and nanotechnology will find topics covered in these books providing valuable information and mathematics background for their multi-disciplinary research and education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory of the Electomagnetism covers the behavior of electromagnetic fields and those parts of applied mathematics necessary to discover this behavior. This book is composed of 11 chapters that emphasize the Maxwell's equations. The first chapter is concerned with the general properties of solutions of Maxwell's equations in matter, which has certain macroscopic properties. The succeeding chapters consider specific problems in electromagnetism, including the determination of the field produced by a variable charge, first in isolation and then in the surface distributions of an antenna. The next two chapters are concerned with the effects of surrounding the medium by a perfectly conducting boundary as in a cavity resonator and as in a waveguide. Other chapters are devoted to discussions on the effect of a plane interface where the properties of the medium change discontinuously; the propagation along cylindrical surfaces; the study of the waves scattered by objects both with and without edges. This book further reviews the harmonic waves and the difficulties involved in going from harmonic waves to those with a more general time dependence. The final chapter provides some information about the classical theory of electrons, magneto-hydrodynamics and waves in a plasma. This book will prove useful to physicists, and physics teachers and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ?rst six chapters of this book are revised versions of the same chapters in the author’s 1969 book, Introduction to Potential Theory. Atthetimeof the writing of that book, I had access to excellent articles, books, and lecture notes by M. Brelot. The clarity of these works made the task of collating them into a single body much easier. Unfortunately, there is not a similar collection relevant to more recent developments in potential theory. A n- comer to the subject will ?nd the journal literature to be a maze of excellent papers and papers that never should have been published as presented. In the Opinion Column of the August, 2008, issue of the Notices of the Am- ican Mathematical Society, M. Nathanson of Lehman College (CUNY) and (CUNY) Graduate Center said it best “. . . When I read a journal article, I often ?nd mistakes. Whether I can ?x them is irrelevant. The literature is unreliable. ” From time to time, someone must try to ?nd a path through the maze. In planning this book, it became apparent that a de?ciency in the 1969 book would have to be corrected to include a discussion of the Neumann problem, not only in preparation for a discussion of the oblique derivative boundary value problem but also to improve the basic part of the subject matter for the end users, engineers, physicists, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Comprehensive Course in Analysis by Poincaré Prize winner Barry Simon is a five-volume set that can serve as a graduate-level analysis textbook with a lot of additional bonus information, including hundreds of problems and numerous notes that extend the text and provide important historical background. Depth and breadth of exposition make this set a valuable reference source for almost all areas of classical analysis. Part 2A is devoted to basic complex analysis. It interweaves three analytic threads associated with Cauchy, Riemann, and Weierstrass, respectively. Cauchy's view focuses on the differential and integral calculus of functions of a complex variable, with the key topics being the Cauchy integral formula and contour integration. For Riemann, the geometry of the complex plane is central, with key topics being fractional linear transformations and conformal mapping. For Weierstrass, the power series is king, with key topics being spaces of analytic functions, the product formulas of Weierstrass and Hadamard, and the Weierstrass theory of elliptic functions. Subjects in this volume that are often missing in other texts include the Cauchy integral theorem when the contour is the boundary of a Jordan region, continued fractions, two proofs of the big Picard theorem, the uniformization theorem, Ahlfors's function, the sheaf of analytic germs, and Jacobi, as well as Weierstrass, elliptic functions.

This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integral Equation Methods for Electromagnetic and Elastic Waves is an outgrowth of several years of work. There have been no recent books on integral equation methods. There are books written on integral equations, but either they have been around for a while, or they were written by mathematicians. Much of the knowledge in integral equation methods still resides in journal papers. With this book, important relevant knowledge for integral equations are consolidated in one place and researchers need only read the pertinent chapters in this book to gain important knowledge needed for integral equation research. Also, learning the fundamentals of linear elastic wave theory does not require a quantum leap for electromagnetic practitioners. Integral equation methods have been around for several decades, and their introduction to electromagnetics has been due to the seminal works of Richmond and Harrington in the 1960s. There was a surge in the interest in this topic in the 1980s (notably the work of Wilton and his coworkers) due to increased computing power. The interest in this area was on the wane when it was demonstrated that differential equation methods, with their sparse matrices, can solve many problems more efficiently than integral equation methods. Recently, due to the advent of fast algorithms, there has been a revival in integral equation methods in electromagnetics. Much of our work in recent years has been in fast algorithms for integral equations, which prompted our interest in integral equation methods. While previously, only tens of thousands of unknowns could be solved by integral equation methods, now, tens of millions of unknowns can be solved with fast algorithms. This has prompted new enthusiasm in integral equation methods.
