Book excerpt: An essay upon prints By William Gilpin Clergyman, schoolmaster and writer on aesthetics, William Gilpin (1724-1804) is best known for his works on the picturesque. His approach as a teacher was enlightened: during his time as headmaster of Cheam School, his aim was to prepare his pupils for life. Moving in 1777 to become vicar of Boldre, Hampshire, where he remained for the rest of his life, he was able to endow two schools there with income from his successful writings. This knowledgeable appraisal of the print as an art form, and of its foremost practitioners, was first published anonymously in 1768 to positive reviews. It defines picturesque as 'a term expressive of that peculiar kind of beauty, which is agreeable in a picture'. Gilpin further developed and explored the concept in his volumes of Observations on various parts of Britain, which are also reissued in this series. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Country Printer: An Essay My earliest memories, or those which I can make sure are not the sort of early hearsay that we mistake for remembrance later in life, concern a country newspaper, or, rather, a country printing-office. The office was in my childish consciousness some years before the paper was; the compositors rhythmically swaying before their cases of type; the pressman flinging himself back on the bar that made the impression, with a swirl of his long hair; the apprentice rolling the forms, and the foreman bending over the imposing-stone were familiar to me when I could not grasp the notion of any effect from their labors. In due time I came to know all about it, and to understand that these activities went to the making of the Whig newspaper which my father edited to the confusion of the Locofocos, and in the especial interest of Henry Clay; I myself supported this leader so vigorously for the presidency in my seventh year that it was long before I could realize that the election of 1844 had resulted in his defeat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Studies, Vol. 1: A Collection of Miscellaneous Essays The present final collection of his miscellaneous papers, originally written for, and printed in the American Monthly Magazine, Arcturus, the Church Record, the Democratic and Whig Reviews, Boston Miscellany, Union Magazine, Literary World, and other periodicals, is intended to include such of the writer's papers (chiefly of literary criticism) as have appeared to him worthy of preservation. With the exception of a few comparatively recent articles, they were mostly written and printed 1838-1845, and comprise a little more than one-half of his entire contributions to the press up to the present date. Most of the papers here collected (since the publication of The Analyst, anonymously in 1839, and which was made up of lucubrations written the year and a half previously) have appeared already in the volumes of Literary Studies and Essays upon Authors and Books. Holding the doctrine of Hazlitt, however, to be sound, that a first edition is as good as MSS., as the impressions of all these three miscellanies were limited, and have been long since out of print, and as numerous typographical errors had crept in, as well as mistakes of fact and opinion, it was thought a new and correct edition might be favorably received by the present generation of readers, young students in particular, in college, the lovers of the choice old English literature, and those cultivated general readers to whom these miscellanies are unknown. A great part of it has already appeared in the form of articles on that subject in The Nineteenth Century and After. I take this opportunity of giving my most sincere thanks to the Editor of that periodical for his liberality in allowing me to make free use in the following pages of such articles. I acknowledge also my great obligation to Messrs. Longmans, Green & Co. for their permission to reprint at full length from the Letters of John Stuart Mill, published by them in 1910, Mill's account of his visit to Wordsworth in 1831. It is by far the best literary portrait of the poet, when already over sixty years of age, which I have been able to discover. Lastly, it is a pleasure to me to state that in writing this essay I have received the greatest help from the suggestions of many friends better acquainted than myself with the whole of Wordsworth's poetry, and more especially from W. P. Ker, Professor of English Literature in University College, London, and from Miss H. Darbishire, Tutor in English Literature at Somerville College, Oxford, and editor of Wordsworth's Poems in Two Volumes of 1807.
