Book excerpt: Excerpt from An English Commentary on Dante's Divina Commedia The primary aim with which these notes have been written is to make Dante's meaning clear to the reader of his poem; and with a view to this, in interpreting the harder passages, translations, paraphrases, or explanations have been introduced, according as one or other of these methods appeared better suited to that purpose. With the same object - in accordance with the principle which is now generally accepted, that 'Dante is to be explained by Dante' - numerous references have been made, especially for the uses of words and phrases, from one part of the poem to another, and also to Dante's prose works, in which, owing to the numbering of the lines in the Oxford edition, passages can now be easily found. The origin and exact meaning of archaic and otherwise unusual words have also been investigated; and the more marked peculiarities of syntax and metre have from time to time been noticed. Further, I have endeavoured to elucidate the allusions and illustrative statements with which the Divina Commedia teems, as far as the restricted limits of such a work as the present admit, and the needs of ordinary students require. In order to be quite sure I consulted a second edition which informed me that it is six days. A third one did not agree with either of the others. Rather surprised, because I am deeply convinced that a great poem is not a collection of riddles, I made up my mind to work out the question for myself Thinking that the first condition of success was to form a clear mental picture of the astronomical data constantly referred to by Dante, I did so, and after the necessary simplifications, it finally took the shape of the Dial accompanying this little work. With its help all the time-references seem to me to be clear, perfectly coherent and easily followed. Only Dante could tell what he would change if he were engaged on the Comedy today. As Dante is a very great poet, every quality of his style demands considera tion; his choice of words and of their place in sentence and in line can not be deemed fortuitous. His firmness of phrase is that of a living organism, and not of a crystal. The beauty and strength of the Italian language and the charm of rhyme as used by the poet are not to be enjoyed completely by those to whom the idiom is not native. An English translator of the Divine Comedy has at his com mand, even if he were perfectly in control of his medium, only the strength and beauty of his own language; his results can be at best an English re-expression of his original, and with such rhythmical qualities as are pleasing to the English ear.
