An Elf's Journey Home shares one elf's story about his love for his family and how all he really wants is to stay with his family forever. Get a rare glimpse inside the mind of an elf. Learn about his excitement as he waits to be promoted to scout, his feelings on being apart from his family most of the year, and how all he really wants for Christmas is to stay with them year-round. This rhyming children's picture book provides children the opportunity to choose to keep their elf as a family member and shares how they can make that permanent choice. Then your diligent search would begin; it was almost a race as you'd get closer and closer to discovering my place. I've watched you learn incredible things on these quests, like critical thinking and how to give one's best. Every year elves bring tremendous joy to families around the world. As children get older, the excitement wanes and parents begin searching for ways to bring closure to the tradition. Every elf parent has had a morning that they had to think on their feet when their child came and asked, "Why didn't the elf move? I didn't touch him!" This heartwarming book provides a graceful way for families to transition to the next chapter in their holiday traditions.

Book excerpt: From award-winning author Sara Pennypacker comes the long-awaited sequel to Pax; this is a gorgeously crafted, utterly compelling novel about chosen families and the healing power of love. A New York Times bestseller! It’s been a year since Peter and his pet fox, Pax, have seen each other. Once inseparable, they now lead very different lives. Pax and his mate, Bristle, have welcomed a litter of kits they must protect in a dangerous world. Meanwhile Peter—newly orphaned after the war, racked with guilt and loneliness—leaves his adopted home with Vola to join the Water Warriors, a group of people determined to heal the land from the scars of the war. When one of Pax's kits falls desperately ill, he turns to the one human he knows he can trust. And no matter how hard Peter tries to harden his broken heart, love keeps finding a way in. Now both boy and fox find themselves on journeys toward home, healing—and each other, once again. As he did for Pax, Jon Klassen, New York Times bestseller, Caldecott medalist, and two-time Caldecott Honoree, has created stunning jacket and interior illustrations.

This book was released on 2010-08-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contemporary America, myths find expression primarily in film. What's more, many of the highest-grossing American movies of the past several decades have been rooted in one of the most fundamental mythic narratives, the hero quest. Why is the hero quest so persistently renewed and retold? In what ways does this universal myth manifest itself in American cinema? And what is the significance of the popularity of these modern myths? The Hero and the Perennial Journey Home in American Film by Susan Mackey-Kallis is an exploration of the appeal of films that recreate and reinterpret this mythic structure. She closely analyzes such films as E.T., the Star Wars trilogy, It's a Wonderful Life, The Wizard of Oz, The Lion King, Field of Dreams, The Piano, Thelma and Louise, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Elements of the quest mythology made popular by Joseph Campbell, Homer's Odyssey, the perennial philosophy of Aldous Huxley, and Jungian psychology all contribute to the compelling interpretive framework in which Mackey-Kallis crafts her study. She argues that the purpose of the hero quest is not limited to the discovery of some boon or Holy Grail, but also involves finding oneself and finding a home in the universe. The home that is sought is simultaneously the literal home from which the hero sets out and the terminus of the personal growth he or she undergoes during the journey back. Thus the quest, Mackey-Kallis asserts, is an outward journey into the world of action and events which eventually requires a journey inward if the hero is to grow, and ultimately necessitates a journey homeward if the hero is to understand the grail and share it with the culture at large. Finally, she examines the value of mythic criticism and addresses questions about myth currently being debated in the field of communication studies.

Book excerpt: "Believe me when I say, if you do not fear Dark Elves, you are a fool, for there is much to be afraid of." Silmanus and Mara are the unlikeliest of allies: an elven wizard and a human outlaw. Plunged together in a struggle for survival, desperation and necessity form an uneasy alliance between elf and human, an alliance challenged by the most lethal warriors in Aeternerras—the sinister Dark Elves. Much to his astonishment, Silmanus discovers his lowly views towards humans are misplaced as he fights side-by-side with them as equals. But could a wizard and a human have anything in common? "As you are not an Arcanist—that is, someone who uses magic—you are probably under the impression that living things have souls or spirits." On the other side of the world, companions Amber and Jeddo—dwarf and gnome—have devoted their lives to hunting down monsters that escape The Fell Lands, naturally reaping the profits that this profession brings. Their ventures become far more trouble than they are worth when the two are taken captive by Dark Elves becoming entangled in a web of death and deceit. "Growling, Amber pushed herself to her feet, but Mordasine’s boot shoved her back down. 'On your knees, filth,' he hissed." In From out of the Shadows, blood is spilled and tears are shed as these four fight for freedom. Many questions remain, questions of trust, motivations, and uncertainty. One question supersedes them all, "What are the Dark Elves plotting – and what other evils are lurking in the shadows?"

Book excerpt: Bugbears are a communal race traditionally associated with evil and with a deep hatred for elves. In order to teach their young, however, they keep samples of their enemies as pets. Enter Ptielieren, a relatively young adult elf, who learns how to survive in a hostile culture even as every moral he once held is stripped from him through a series of cyclically recurring abuses. Through painful trial and error, Ptielieren discovers that fighting against his enemies is not a valid tactic and gets him nowhere. He is positioned such that running away, too, is not viable. To find success, he must become strong enough in his sense of self to find peace and to find enough common ground with his enemies to sculpt them toward a better, stronger, more nurturing and accepting future. This, the first in the series, lays the foundation of the fundamental shifts he seeks to imprint, even as he forsakes what he thought it was to be an elf.
