Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Pure Geometry: With Numerous Examples I have assumed that the reader has passed through the ordinary curriculum in Geometry before attempting to read the present subject; viz. Euclid, some Appendix to Euclid, and Geometrical Conics. I have not found it convenient to keep rigidly to any single notation. But, ordinarily, points have been denoted by A, B, lines by a, b, and planes and conics by a, 67 73. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on the Geometry of Conics This work contains elementary proofs of the principal properties of Conics, and is intended for students who proceed to the study of the subject after finishing the first six books of Euclid: the curves have not, therefore, been defined as the sections of a cone, although that method has the sanction of history and antiquity in its favour; and for the same reason, no use has been made of the method of projections. As regards the arrangement of the subject, I have thought it best to devote separate chapters to the parabola, the ellipse, and the hyperbola. The plan of starting with a chapter on general conics, in which some fundamental propositions arc proved by methods applicable to all the three curves, has no doubt the advantage of securing an appearance of brevity. But, I believe, beginners find the subject more intelligible when the properties of the three curves are discussed separately. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Cross-Ratio Geometry: With Historical Notes As there is scarcely any part of conics to which the theory of cross-ratio is not applicable, and as I wished to curtail the size of the book as much as possible, it was necessary to follow some definite path, and I have selected the course which leads us to consider conics through four points, and conics touching four lines, their common chords and tangents, the relations between the four constants of homology obtained by taking any pair of common chords with the pair of corresponding tangent vertices as axes and centres of homology, and conics having double contact. I took this route because it contains parts of the subject which have not previously been fully treated, and at the same time it gives the student a good illustration of the power of the theory. A good deal of the work in these chapters is original, and where it is not so, references have been given, where possible, to the original authorities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Conic Sections and Algebraic Geometry: With Numerous Examples and Hints for Their Solution, Especially Designed for the Use of Beginners My chief object was to write with special reference to those difficulties and misapprehensions, which I had found most common to beginners. In the later edition's I have tried, without losing sight of my original purpose, to make the book suitable to the requirements of the time. The present edition has been carefully revised throughout. I have added a considerable amount of new matter, especially in the way of illustrative examples worked out. I have also changed the notation of the General Equation of the Second Order, to that used by Dr Salmon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geometrical Conic Sections: An Elementary Treatise in Which the Conic Sections Are Defined as the Plane Sections of a Cone, and Treated by the Method of Projections It is hoped these may be thought sufficient reasons for departing from the definition which has been in use of late years. I have retained the proof of the constancy of the ratio of the rectangles under the segments of intersecting chords in constant directions (chap. V. Given by Dean Hamilton in his treatise published in 1773, as an improving and interesting study and one that is in harmony with the scheme of this work.
