Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Theory of Equations The longer an engineer has been separated from his alma mater, the fewer mathematical formulas he uses and the more he relies upon tables and, when the latter fail, upon graphical methods. Although graphical methods have the advantage of being ocular, they frequently suffer from the fact that only what is seen is sensed. But this defect is due to the kind of graphics used. With the aid of the scientific art of graphing pre sented in Chapter I, one may not merely make better graphs in less time but actually draw correct negative conclusions from a graph so made, and therefore sense more than one sees. For instance, one may be sure that a given cubic equation has only the one real root seen in the graph, if the bend points lie on the same side of the x-axis. Emphasis is here placed upon Newton's method of solving numerical equations, both from the graphical and the numerical standpoint. One of several advantages (well recognized in Europe) of Newton's method over Homer's is that it applies as well to non-algebraic as to algebraic equations. In this elementary book, the author has of course omitted the difficult Galois theory of algebraic equations (certain texts on which are very erroneous) and has merely illustrated the subject of invariants by a few examples. It is surprising that the theorems of Descartes, Budan, and Sturm, on the real roots of an equation, are Often stated inaccurately. Nor are the texts in English on this subject more fortunate on the score of correct proofs; for these reasons, care has been taken in selecting the books to which the reader is referred in the present text. The material is here so arranged that, before an important general theorem is stated, the reader has had concrete illustrations and often also special cases. The exercises are so placed that a reasonably elegant and brief solution may be expected, without resort to tedious multiplications and similar manual labor. Very few Of the five hundred exercises are of the same nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book throws important light on various elementary topics. For example, an alert. Student of geometry who has learned how to bisect auv angle is apt to ask if every angle can be trisected with ruler and compasses and if not, why not. After learning how to construct regular polygons of 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 sides, he will be inquisitive about the missing ones of 7 and 9 sides. The teacher will be in a comfortable position if he knows the facts and what. Is involved in the simplest discussion to date of these questions, as given in Chapter III. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws of Algebra: An Elementary Course in Algebraic Theory IT has long been acknowledged that there is great need of an elementary account of the Laws of Algebra suitable for use in the senior classes of schools. The object of this little book is to meet that need: it makes, therefore, no pretence of ex pounding new ideas, but aims at a clear and simple statement of the rudiments of algebraic theory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Course in the Theory of Equations The theory of equations is not only a necessity in the subsequent mathematical courses and their applications, but furnishes an illuminating sequel to geometry, algebra and analytic geometry. Moreover, it develops anew and in greater detail various fundamental ideas of calculus for the simple, but important, case of polynomials. The theory of equations therefore affords a useful supplement to differential calculus whether taken subsequently or simultaneously. It was to meet the numerous needs of the student in regard to his earlier and future mathematical courses that the present book was planned with great care and after wide consultation. It differs essentially from the author's Elementary Theory of Equations, both in regard to omissions and additions, and since it is addressed to younger students and may be used parallel with a course in differential calculus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise: On the Theory of Equations; With a Collection of Examples The present treatise contains all the propositions which are usually included in elementary treatises on the Theory of Equations, together with a collection of examples for exercise. As the Theory of Equations involves a large number of interesting and important results, which can be demonstrated with simplicity and clearness, the subject may advantageously engage the attention of a student at an early period of his mathematical course. The present treatise may be read by those who are familiar with Algebra, since no higher knowledge is assumed, except in Arts. 149, 175, 268, 308...314, and Chapter xxxi., which may be postponed by those who are not acquainted with De Moivre's Theorem in Trigonometry. This work may be regarded as a sequel to that on Algebra by the present writer, and accordingly the student has occasionally been referred to the treatise on Algebra for preliminary information on some topics here discussed. In composing the present work, the author has obtained assistance from the treatises on Algebra by Bourdon, Lefebure de Fourcy, and Mayer and Choquet; on special points he has consulted other writers, who are named in their appropriate places in the course of the work. The examples have been selected from the College and University examination papers, and the results have been given where it appeared necessary; in most cases however, from the nature of the example, the student will be able immediately to test the correctness of his result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on the Theory of Equations In this treatise it is my aim to give the elements of Determinants and the Theory of Equations in a form suitable, both in amount and quality of matter, for use in the undergraduate courses in our colleges and universities. To this end I have endeavored to make the work in every part readily intelligible to the average student who has become proficient in algebra and the elements of trigonometry. All use of the calculus has purposely been avoided. While the presentation of the subject has necessarily been condensed to suit the requirements of college courses, great pains has been taken not to sacrifice clearness to brevity. It is a short treatise, but not a syllabus. Part I treats of Determinants. The first two chapters give the fundamental theorems, with examples for illustration. The third chapter consists of applications and special forms of determinants, followed by a collection of carefully selected examples. These three chapters on determinants should serve as a helpful introduction to the study of this interesting class of functions. Part II treats of the Theory of Equations proper. The principal elementary theorems concerning algebraic and numerical equations arc deduced. After a brief introduction, giving definitions, etc., there follows a chapter on Complex Quantities, a subject which seems worthy of more space than is usually allotted to it in so elementary a treatise.
