Smallholder tea farmers account for 63% of produce with about 400,000 farmers spread in rural areas of tea growing Zones. It employs thousands directly/indirectly in rural and industrial areas. Smallholders produce less in terms of Kg/ha compared to the large scale estate sector with total few hectare, hence disparities in incomes. There is increasing neglected tea farms which occupy land that can be put to other economic uses and persistent poverty is noticeable yet tea is a sector which can really affect many people should it collapse. This book analyzes the situation both at production and post harvest level using descriptive, economic models and parametric tests with a case study of two districts of rural Kenya. It highlights the problems and suggests recommendations that can help in improving production and can apply to other similar situations. the book is useful to policymakers, Agricultural Extension Officers, farmers, students, community project advisers/managers, researchers and other relevant stakeholders especially in upcoming economies.
Book Synopsis Modelling Time Series Analysis of Tea Production in Kenya from 1963 to 2015 by : George Kingori Maina
Download or read book Modelling Time Series Analysis of Tea Production in Kenya from 1963 to 2015 written by George Kingori Maina and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2022 in the subject History - Africa, grade: 3.5/4, , course: Social Science in Statistics, language: English, abstract: Tea is the leading export cash crop and a highly consumed beverage in Kenya. Small scale farmers are more than large scale farmers in Kenya. However, they own small sizes of land which is a limiting factor to tea production. Analysis of trends is an aspect of technical analysis that tries to predict the future movement of stock based on past data. The main objectives of this study is To construct a suitable time series model for the data, To determine the correlation between production and size of land, To forecast tea production Examples of analysis of trends are total monthly sales receipts in a departmental store and total monthly production by company. This research project was on the trends of tea production and area under tea that are collected annually since 1963 to 2015 and to construct a time series model of a suitable order for the process. The large scale size of land mean is 34882.04 hectares and the average small scale size of land is 4563.25 hectares .For the stationarity of the data the Dickey-Fuller test (ADF); Dickey-Fuller = -1.9254, Lag order = 3, p-value = 0.6045.The correlation of the large scale and small scale holders is; 0.9588537 and 0.9339925 hence strong linear relationship . The best possible models for modelling large scale is ARIMA (2, 1, 0) with Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) of 1885.73 and for Small scale farmers it ARIM(1,1,0) with AIC of 1915.76. The rate of change of the predicted tea production is 0.97 which is a very low rate. These values show that in the next 20 years there will be no significant changes in tea production in Kenya.

Book Synopsis A Thirst for Empire by : Erika Rappaport
Download or read book A Thirst for Empire written by Erika Rappaport and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tea has been one of the most popular commodities in the world. Over centuries, profits from its growth and sales funded wars and fueled colonization, and its cultivation brought about massive changes--in land use, labor systems, market practices, and social hierarchies--the effects of which are with us even today. A Thirst for Empire takes a vast and in-depth historical look at how men and women--through the tea industry in Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa--transformed global tastes and habits and in the process created our modern consumer society. As Erika Rappaport shows, between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries the boundaries of the tea industry and the British Empire overlapped but were never identical, and she highlights the economic, political, and cultural forces that enabled the British Empire to dominate--but never entirely control--the worldwide production, trade, and consumption of tea. Rappaport delves into how Europeans adopted, appropriated, and altered Chinese tea culture to build a widespread demand for tea in Britain and other global markets and a plantation-based economy in South Asia and Africa. Tea was among the earliest colonial industries in which merchants, planters, promoters, and retailers used imperial resources to pay for global advertising and political lobbying. The commercial model that tea inspired still exists and is vital for understanding how politics and publicity influence the international economy ..."--Jacket.
