This book was released on 2015-08-03 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Norton Critical Edition includes four stories—two set on stormy seas, two on calm seas, all four based on the same incident—that speak to each other in interesting ways. The stories in this Norton Critical Edition maintain the connection and sequencing that Joseph Conrad saw among them. In his “Author’s Note” to ‘Twixt Land and Sea, Conrad writes of his two “Calm-pieces” (“The Secret Sharer” and The Shadow-Line) and his two “Storm-pieces” (The Nigger of the “Narcissus” and “Typhoon”). This edition is based on the first English book edition for the stories and the first American edition for the “Author’s Note” for The Shadow-Line, “Typhoon,” and “The Secret Sharer.” The stories are accompanied by explanatory annotations, a note on the texts (including a list of textual emendations), and a preface. “Backgrounds and Contexts” brings together relevant correspondence and contemporary reviews from both British and American sources. Also included are documents related to Conrad’s sources for the stories, among them Charles Arthur Sankey’s “Ordeal of the Cutty Sark: A True Story of Mutiny, Murder on the High Seas.” To help readers navigate, the editor includes a glossary of nautical terms as well as diagrams of the kinds of ships that appear in the stories. “Criticism” includes fifteen essays representing both new and established voices. The essays are arranged by story, with the focus on Conrad’s major themes—colonialism, narrative, gender, and race. Albert J. Guerard, Lillian Nayder, Mark D. Larabee, Fredric Jameson, F. R. Leavis, and John G. Peters are among the contributors. A chronology of Conrad’s life and work and a selected bibliography are also included.

It is accompanied here by the stories with which it has been published since 1902: the autobiographical Youth, and the tale of an old man's fall from fortune, The End of the Tether. Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library; a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover. This edition features an afterword by Dr Keith Carabine, specialist in American literature and former chair of the Joseph Conrad society. One night on the Thames, Charles Marlowe tells his fellow sailors the vivid and brutal tale of his time as a riverboat captain in the Belgian Congo. From the mists of London we are whisked to the darkness of Africa’s colonial heart – and into the thrall of the tyrannical Kurtz, an ivory trader who has established himself as a terrifying demi-god.

Book excerpt: Heart of Darkness is a short and vividly brutal account of colonial enterprise that has as much in common with the jaded Evelyn Waugh of Black Mischief as it does with any of Conrad's direct contemporaries in the late nineteenth century. It is accompanied in this volume by the tales with which it has been published since 1902, the autobiographical short story "Youth," and the less personal but more substantial tale of an old man's fall from fortune, "The End of the Tether." Though these stories differ considerably in style and content from his later novels, much of his reputation rests upon the words contained in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. Written at various times, under various influences, these short stories are linked by Conrad's treatment of loyalty and betrayal. Typhoon is the story of one unremarkable steamship captain, pitted against a storm of incredible fury. Captain MacWhirr has a reputation as a solid, steadfast man, who "having just enough imagination to carry him through each successive day, and no more" cannot fully believe any storm would be a match for his powerful ship. When the barometer and other clues begin to hint at trouble ahead, he is only moderately concerned and unwilling to change course and lose precious time-a decision that may prove more costly than he could ever have imagined. The tone of other stories in the volume shifts from the pathos of Because of the Dollars to the gothic The Inn of the Two Witches and the grim humour of The Partner.

Book excerpt: The Ethiopian empire ended with Haile Selassie as the last Negus Negesti, descendant of the Lion of Judah, in 1975 when he was arrested and killed by Mengistu Haile Mariam, a Communist dictator who, in turn, was overthrown in 1990 through uprisings in Eritrea and Wollo/Tigre Provinces. Legend has it that the Queen of Sheba, who the Ethiopian rulers are said to have descended from, was made to promise King Solomon a night of passion if he were able to catch her stealing anything of his, even though she, being a rich ruler, albeit a vassal, had given him so many gifts ( see I Kings ). The myth holds that it was during such a night that the very first ruler of Ethiopia was produced by Solomon and conceived by the Queen of Sheba, whose traditional Arabic name is Bilqis. This story about an unbridled night of passion fleshes out the Ethiopian myth of three thousand years ago and also explains the origin of Ethiopia's notoriously hot curries. Flavius Josephus, the Judeo-Roman historian, claims that not only were Solomon and the Queen of Sheba a recognized couple but that her empire included, within Northeast Africa, Egypt as well.

The boat voyage from Apia down the coast inside the reef is not a long one, but the Samoan crew were frightened to have such a man free; so they tied him hand and foot and then lashed him down tightly under the midship thwart with strips of green fau bark. Not that they did so with unnecessary cruelty, but ex-Lieutenant Schwartzkoff, the foreman, was looking on, and then, besides that, this big-boned, light-skinned man was a foreigner, and a Samoan hates a foreigner of his own colour if he is poor and friendless. And then he was an aitu a devil, and could speak neither Samoan, nor Fijian, nor Tokelau, nor yet any English or German....FROM THE BOOKS.

Book excerpt: Mango Lady & Other Stories from Hawaii takes the reader on a journey not unlike a long ride across the face of a giant wave, full of unexpected turns and surprises, weaving together memories, fantasies, and personalities that stretch from long ago Hawaii to modern day Vietnam. Through all of them is the connecting spirit of the Islands, its special mana, its people, its surf, bringing times past into the present in a special, intimate way. There is Mango Lady, who lived in Waikiki since childhood, watching her ancient preoccupations become irrelevant in the new bustle of development. There is The Man to Whom Surf Cam, the tale of a magical Urban who never failed to attract surf. There is A November Surfer, an adventure of a senior surfer at remote Rabbit Island. There is Hard Port, an intriguing pulling together of Hawaii and Russia, when a longtime surfer visits Nakhodka in the Russian Far East, the land of his ancestors. Finally, there is the flamboyant and unsettling Captain Aloha, a tale of two old surfing friends from Hawaii and the horrors of the war in Vietnam, a unique portrait of psychology and culture, of friendship and passing time."

Book excerpt: The Bridge on the River Song and Other Stories is a refreshing collection of twenty-three short stories with elements of romance, bravery, suspense, compassion, history and mystery. A few of them are retellings of folk stories from the hills of Uttarakhand, particularly Garhwal, and then there are stories from within the author's family in Dehradun. All the stories have a connection with Dehradun or a character from Garhwal–Kumaon or they start or finish in Uttarakhand. A few are translations of the author's Hindi audio stories already on the YouTube channels #StoryJam and #KuchhKisseKuchhKahaniyan. Written in simple English, they can be read by any English speaker without consulting a dictionary. Some stories have a few Sanskrit and Hindi words and phrases (with side-by-side English translations and a glossary at the end), adding to their linguistic richness.

Despite of it containing elements of a political thriller, the novel has many supernatural looking elements. It tells the story of an Englishman who falls in love with an American heiress involved with the intrigues of the Spanish–American War.
