The book is based on empirical work by two authors from County Clare. An tAthair Seóirse Mac Clúin based Réilthíní Óir on the Irish of the Great Blasket Islands. Réilthíní Óir comprised the native Irish of Tomás Ó Criomhthain and the islanders of the Great Blasket Islands prior to 1922. The original title is revised in full with modern additions based on current native Irish (2007-2014). The language planning researcher is Seosamh Mac Ionnrachtaigh from Kilrush West Clare. This combined research results in an Irish-Irish Dictionary of the Irish language with key explanations in English.
Book Synopsis An File Ar Buile by : Seamas O Neachtain
Download or read book An File Ar Buile written by Seamas O Neachtain and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2004-05-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Gaeilge An File ar Buile the Mad Poet. Why so? Is writing poetry a form of madness? Or is it therapeutic? Are the ideas in them mad? Or do people just think so? Is it mad to write in Irish Gaelic? Or to translate it? Is it mad to be a Catholic Christian in the 21st century? Or does that question make you mad? Is the poet furious at the insanity in the world? Or is he just contributing his piece to it? Is the poet mad, eccentric, or maybe just a little bit off? Its up to the reader to answer these questions. The poet is content that you think about them. There is a lot to ponder in this book. And theres just plain fun, too! These 75 Irish language poems, and their English translations, cover a wide range of subjects, from silly parodies to everyday events to historical narrative. They are about personal experiences, and long distant times. They take another, different look at history, and the world we live in. They speak of America, Ireland, Europe, Russia and even Antarctica! Some are about very ordinary things, and some are about world shaking events. They sometimes are about the things youre not supposed to talk about because we really need to. Modern in outlook and language, they celebrate traditional values, Irish and American. They celebrate heroes, lament tragedy, and laugh at absurdity. They speak clearly, and they look deeply when they are not just fooling around! There are 30 photographs inside this book, which often are of places mentioned in the poems. Others just capture the spirit of the poems. All of them were taken by the author. As an extra bonus, the story of the Gerry Tobin Irish Language School is included in this book! Except for one poem (For the New Year), which was written for the millennium (2000), these poems were all written between September 2001 and September 2003. A number of them are about the terrible events of September 11th, 2001, and their aftermath. Writing them was a way for me to try to comprehend. All of them are attempts at comprehending the world, at verbalizing those hard to get at emotions and movements of the human spirit, at remembering the important things. They connect with the past, cope with the present, and hope in the future. The Mad Poet you never know what hes going to say An File ar Buile. Cad ina thaobh? Book Synopsis Irish Speakers and Schooling in the Gaeltacht, 1900 to the Present by : Tom O'Donoghue
Download or read book Irish Speakers and Schooling in the Gaeltacht, 1900 to the Present written by Tom O'Donoghue and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first full-length study of the education of children living within the Gaeltacht, the Irish-speaking communities in Ireland, from 1900 to the present day. While Irish was once the most common language spoken in Ireland, by 1900 the areas in which native speakers of Irish were located contracted to such an extent that they became clearly identifiable from the majority English-speaking parts. In the mid-1920s, the new Irish Free State outlined the broad parameters of the boundaries of these areas under the title of ‘the Gaeltacht’. This book is concerned with the schooling of children there. The Irish Free State, from its establishment in 1922, eulogized the people of the Gaeltacht, maintaining they were pious, heroic and holders of the characteristics of an invented ancient Irish race. Simultaneously, successive governments did very little to try to regenerate the Gaeltacht or to ensure Gaeltacht children would enjoy equality of education opportunity. Furthermore, children in the Gaeltacht had to follow the same primary school curriculum as was prescribed for the majority English speaking population. The central theme elaborated on throughout the book is that this schooling was one of a number of forces that served to maintain the people of the Gaeltacht in a marginalized position in Irish society.
