Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Sheridan Le Fanu was originally published in 1862. Born in Dublin in 1814, he came from a literary family of Huguenot origins; both his grandmother Alicia Sheridan Le Fanu and his great-uncle Richard Brinsley Sheridan were playwrights, and his niece Rhoda Broughton would go on to become a successful novelist. Le Fanu entered Trinity College, Dublin to study law. While there, he was elected Auditor of the College Historical Society, and between 1838 and 1840 published his first series of short stories, which were later collected as The Purcell Papers. At his peak, le Fanu was the leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century, and he is now seen as central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. His work is credited with turning the Gothic's focus from the external sources of horror to the inward effects of terror, thus helping to create the psychological basis for supernaturalist literature that continues to this day. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Book excerpt: The story is told in the first person by a man who has been advised by his doctor to take up residence by the sea. He and his wife are pretty close to invalids. They take their retinue of six servants and their children to their new house. The fun of this story is in the slow suspense Daddy builds up so skillfully and the very matter- of- fact way the story is told. The first sign something is wrong is when his wife, they have their own rooms, insists there was a stranger in her room. Soon the servants report seeing intruders. At first it is thought they are simply real people coming into the house as the sea coast area has a lot of smugglers and such who may just be trying to scare them out of the house so they can use it for their operations. Then he starts seeing spectral guests also. To make it all the strangers, his servants each describe encounters with people that he has seen in the house also. It is too much to be just dreams as people always first say about ghosts.

Book excerpt: The haunted house is a foundational motif in the literary ghost story. There may be a distinct spectral presence, or the building itself (or even just a room) may take on the supernatural essence. Authors have been playing with the theme for decades, exploring the idea of haunting and being haunted within what was intended to be a welcoming home, making clear that tragedy, pain, and evil leave their marks. Eighteen stories and a short series ('The Ghost Hunters, ' by Allen Upward) are included in this volume. Included are: The Ghost Story of Pliny the Younger; The Tapestried Chamber (Sir Walter Scott); The Haunted Manor-House of Paddington (Charles Ollier); The Haunted and the Haunters (Edward Bulwer-Lytton); An Authentic Narrative of a Haunted House (Sheridan Le Fanu); The Ghost at Laburnum Villa (Anonymous); The Spook House (Ambrose Bierce); The Little Room (Madeline Yale Wynne); The Red Room (H. G. Wells); The House that was Not (Elia Wilkinson Peattie); A Case of Eavesdropping (Algernon Blackwood); The Southwest Chamber (Mary E. Wilkins Freeman); The Empty House (Algernon Blackwood); The Toll-House (W. W. Jacobs); Afterward (Edith Wharton); The Beckoning Fair One (Oliver Onions); The Attic (Algernon Blackwood); The Decoy (Algernon Blackwood); The Ghost Hunters (Allen Upward) For additional anthologies of supernatural fiction and fantasy, visit CoachwhipBooks.com.

Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: It is one of the best spooky stories, definitely spine-chilling. Mysterious and vivacious action in the story mesmerizes the reader. The horrifying effect is created as the arcane setting of fires, shaking of the house, loud and incessant noises, distinct knocking as sledge-hammers on the walls and the furniture moves in day-light without any visible cause. Interesting and fear-provoking!

Book excerpt: A ghost story may be any piece of fiction, or drama, that includes a ghost, or simply takes as a premise the possibility of ghosts or characters' belief in them. The "ghost" may appear of its own accord or be summoned by magic. Linked to the ghost is the idea of "hauntings", where a supernatural entity is tied to a place, object or person. Ghost stories are commonly examples of ghostlore. Book excerpt: The Handbook to the Ghost Story sets out to survey and significantly extend a new field of criticism which has been taking shape over recent years, centring on the ghost story and bringing together a vast range of interpretive methods and theoretical perspectives. The main task of the volume is to properly situate the genre within historical and contemporary literary cultures across the globe, and to explore its significance within wider literary contexts as well as those of the supernatural. The Handbook offers the most significant contribution to this new critical field to date, assembling some of its leading scholars to examine the key contexts and issues required for understanding the emergence and development of the ghost story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the fiction of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–73) in their original material and cultural contexts of the early-to-mid Victorian period in Ireland. Le Fanu’s longstanding relationship with the Dublin University Magazine, a popular literary and political journal, is a crucial context in the examination of his work. Likewise, Le Fanu’s fiction is considered as part of a wider surge of supernatural, historical and antiquarian activity by Irish Protestants in the period following the Act of Union between Great Britain and Ireland (1801). Le Fanu’s habit of writing and re-writing stories is discussed in detail, a practice that has engendered much confusion and consternation. Posthumous collections of Le Fanu’s work are compared with original publications, demonstrating the importance of these material and cultural contexts. This book reveals new critical readings of some of Le Fanu’s best known fiction, while also casting light on some of his regrettably overlooked work through recontextualisation.
