Book excerpt: In my former narrative I described our exploration of the Herbert River, lying at the south end of Rockingham Channel, with its fruitless issue; and I now take up the thread of my story from that point, thinking it can hardly fail to be of interest to the reader, not only as regards the wild nature of the country traversed, but also as showing the anxiety manifested by the inhabitants of these remote districts to clear up the fate of their unhappy brethren. I may also here mention, for the information of such of my readers as may not have read the preceding portions of the narrative, that Cardwell is the name of a small township situated on the shores of Rockingham Bay; and that Townsville is a settlement some hundred miles further south, known also as Cleveland Bay.

Book excerpt: Five old friends reunite for an idyllic glamping holiday on the rugged Cornwall coast, but tensions rise when a storm leaves them stranded and someone goes missing. Max and Annie Kingsley have left the London rat race with their twelve-year-old son to set up a glamping site in the wilds of Cornwall. Eager for a dry run ahead of their opening, they invite three old university friends and their families for a long-needed reunion and a relaxing weekend. But the festivities soon go awry as tensions arise between the children (and subsequently their parents), explosive secrets come to light, and a sudden storm moves in, cutting them off from help as one in the group disappears. Moving between a police investigation, a hospital room and the catastrophic weekend, The Search Party is a propulsive destination thriller about the tenuous bonds of friendship and the lengths parents will go to protect their children. Praise for The Search Party ‘If you read just one thriller this year, make it The Search Party. I couldn’t put it down.’ Mark Brandi ‘Richell has written a standout page-turner, thoroughly gripping from start to finish.’ Anna Downes

Book Synopsis BUCKLEY, BATMAN & MYNDIE: Echoes of the Victorian culture-clash frontier by :
Download or read book BUCKLEY, BATMAN & MYNDIE: Echoes of the Victorian culture-clash frontier written by and published by BookPOD. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 893 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SOUNDING 3 begins with Echo 34: DERRIMUTT THE GO-BETWEEN. This clan head of the Bunurong people was the traditional ‘owner’ of the town site that became Melbourne’s CBD on the western side of the river. Bible-bashing Protector Thomas’s journals of camping with the natives at what is now the Botanic Gardens is eye-opening and reveals mind-bending mysteries and misery with grog and gun-control issues that resonate on up to today. This Sounding personalises many local Kulin identities such as Polierong aka Billy Lonsdale and Yabbee aka Billy Hamilton who name-swapped with the early leading townsmen and squatters on their ‘country’. Next follow snippets from Mick Woiwod’s fictional but faithful novel The Last Cry, along with his Yarra Valley anthropology and reconciliatory vision. Surveying and selling off the Yarra and Diamond Valley ‘badlands’ stringybark forest leads into discussions on sorcery, smallpox and culture-collapse into fringe-dwelling. The frontier moves on north, west and east and the tone changes to academic, political and biographic studies of Aboriginal workers and surviving kooris including the life and times of Wurundjeri clan heads Billibellary, Simon Wonga and William Barak. In the decades after World War 2, academic historical analysis led to the politicized ‘history wars’ as reaction to the racist colonial ‘white Australia policy’ lies, fears and distortions cloaked by denial and patriotism. Echo 49: THE NATIVE POLICE – Turncoats or adaptation [?] is the largest echo in this Sounding and the question is posed in five parts, the last being Irish observer Claire Dunne on applying the bloody colonial lessons of Port Phillip to frontier Queensland and beyond to Central Australia’s mass-murderer Constable Willshire and the cultural logic of settler nationalism. Echoes follow on re-visioning Aboriginal / white history and historical geography research of ‘high country’ clans and language groups in my unsatisfied search of a supposed ‘superior tribe’ in the Alps who reportedly ‘dwelt in stone houses all year round’. Sounding 3 ends with echoes titled COLONIAL OBSERVATIONS OF HIGH SOCIETY EMIGRANTS containing Georgina and her son George McCrae’s journals of Yarra-side and pioneering the Mornington peninsula in the 1840s along with early 1860s photographs of native people collected by gentleman squatter John Hunter Kerr.

Book Synopsis European Discovery and Exploration of Australia by : Erwin Feeken
Download or read book European Discovery and Exploration of Australia written by Erwin Feeken and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The map of Australia abounds with fascinating geographical place-names, the origins of which have, for long, been hidden in the journals of our early explorers. Now after nine years of research, Erwin Feeken, a highly qualified cartographer, and his wife, Gerda, have finalised the first complete record of Australian geographical place-names and the most comprehensive general reference work on Australian exploration ever published. In European Discovery and Exploration of Australia, there are twenty-three beautifully drawn four-colour maps plus index showing the routes of more than 120 explorers with the locality of their named features numbered to accord with a Key to the Maps. The place-names in the Key have been numbered approximately in chronological order of their naming, though places found during a single expedition have been grouped together. There is also a gazetteer containing over four thousand place-names alphabetically arranged with notes on their origins. The map reference numbers (in brackets) form a cross-reference with the Key to the Maps. The work is introduced by a foreword from Lord Casey and an essay on the nature of Australian exploration by Professor O. H. K. Spate, director of the Research School of Pacific Studies, Australian National University. The text, comprising a survey of Australian exploration, is arranged in the form of biographies of the explorers (describing, for the first time, several almost unknown figures) with emphasis on their expeditions and under the following headings: “The Approach to Australia”; “Exploration before Settlement, 1606–1788”; “From Botany Bay to the Blue Mountains, 1788–1813”; “Land and Sea Expeditions, 1813–1901.” This section of the book is very fully illustrated with 18 full-colour plates and some 150 black-and-white photographs, mostly reproductions of early prints. Concluding the book are bibliographies of sources and references, a list of illustrations, and an index of explorers and ships. The comprehensive nature of this work will ensure that it becomes a valuable reference book for students, while the text and illustrations will appeal to all who are interested in our history. Collectors of Australiana will welcome this most attractive addition to the ever-increasing number of available publications.
