She was the teacher and later wife of astronomer Asaph Hall whom she married in 1856. The Halls had four sons, Asaph Jr., who also became an astronomer, Samuel, Angelo, the author of this memoir published in 1908, and Percival, all of whom were home-schooled by their mother before attending Harvard. Angeline had to give up her own academic career after her marriage but she assisted and encouraged her husband in his search for satellites of Mars which he successfully discovered with the aid of her calculations. The largest crater on Phobos is named after her in recognition of her support for the satellite's discovery. This work is dedicated to Angelo's daughter, Peggy, who never knew her grandmother as she had died before Peggy was born.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the oldest scientific institutions in the United States, the US Naval Observatory has a rich and colourful history. This volume is, first and foremost, a story of the relations between space, time and navigation, from the rise of the chronometer in the United States to the Global Positioning System of satellites, for which the Naval Observatory provides the time to a billionth of a second per day. It is a story of the history of technology, in the form of telescopes, lenses, detectors, calculators, clocks and computers over 170 years. It describes how one scientific institution under government and military patronage has contributed, through all the vagaries of history, to almost two centuries of unparalleled progress in astronomy. Sky and Ocean Joined will appeal to historians of science, technology, scientific institutions and American science, as well as astronomers, meteorologists and physicists.

Book Synopsis Unravelling Starlight by : Barbara J. Becker
Download or read book Unravelling Starlight written by Barbara J. Becker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging traditional accounts of the origins of astrophysics, this book presents the first scholarly biography of nineteenth-century English amateur astronomer William Huggins (1824–1910). A pioneer in adapting the spectroscope to new astronomical purposes, William Huggins rose to scientific prominence in London and transformed professional astronomy to become a principal founder of the new science of astrophysics. The author re-examines his life and career, exploring unpublished notebooks, correspondence and research projects to expose the boldness of this scientific entrepreneur. While Sir William Huggins is the main focus of the book, the involvement of Lady Margaret Lindsay Huggins (1848–1915) in her husband's research is examined, where it may have been previously overlooked or obscured. Written in an engaging style, this book has broad appeal and will be valuable to scientists, students and anyone interested in the history of astronomy.
