Book excerpt: Traffic control devices applied to the pavement can provide a significant amount of information for the driver. The objective of this research was to assess the effectiveness of various pavement marking materials, devices, and treatments that have potential to increase driver awareness and safety. The following pavement marking materials, devices, and treatments were investigated as part of this research project: . yellow-green crosswalk material, . in-roadway warning lights, . fluorescent orange retroreflective raised pavement markers, . "removable" pavement marking paint, and . rumble strips. This report includes recommendations for the application of in-roadway warning lights and rumble strips. Further research is needed on the yellow-green crosswalk material, fluorescent orange retroreflective raised pavement markers, and the "removable" pavement marking paint before application guidelines can be developed.

Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 339: Centerline Rumble Strips (CLRS) examines current design, installation, configuration, dimension, and visibility issues associated with CLRS. The report addresses the need for guidance on warrants, benefits, successful practices, and concerns such as external noise and the reduced visibility of centerline striping material. Also addressed are pavement deterioration, ice buildup in the grooves, adverse impact on emergency vehicles, and the effect of CLRS on bicyclists. Particular attention was paid to available before-and-after CLRS installation crash data to document the safety aspects of CLRS and the availability of policies, guidelines, warrants, and costs regarding their use and design.

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to traffic engineers, highway design engineers, highway maintenance personnel, those responsible for toll plaza design and operation, and others concerned with the operation, safety and design of the roadway environment. Information is presented on the various applications of rumble strips on the traveled way and on highway shoulders. This synthesis describes the state of the practice with respect to placement, operational and safety effects, design, installation, and cost and service life of rumble strips. This report of the Transportation Research Board also discusses the effectiveness of rumble strips in preventing or reducing accidents. It provides information on the potential adverse effects of rumble strips, such as noise, motorist use of opposing lanes to avoid rumble strips, maintenance problems, and concerns of special users such as senior citizens, bikers, and truckers. The need for signing and public information support are also discussed. The synthesis presents several recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: This synthesis documents current practices used by states installing rumble strips and explores variations in practice in terms of design, criteria, and locations for installation, maintenance, perceived benefits, communication of benefits, and important issues. Information was acquired through a literature review, survey on current practice, and case examples. The survey also included questions specific to the state of practice for rumble stripes, which is the term used when the pavement marking lines are painted on the rumble strip in an effort to increase visibility during inclement weather conditions. The findings indicate that two-thirds of the state agencies rely on traditional methods to address the noise issue: skipping rumbles in residential areas, adjusting their depth, or not installing rumbles at all. The overwhelming majority of responding states, 83%, have developed policies or guidance to modify their rumble design practices to be sensitive to cyclists. Fewer than half the respondents have developed policies/guidance to address pavement deterioration; several agencies indicated that pavement condition is a factor on whether to install a rumble or not. The survey also showed that very few state DOTs have created public campaigns to explain that the use of rumbles improves safety so that complaints regarding noise, bicycle issues, and other are minimized.

Book excerpt: Rumble strips are one of the special geometric features which can be applied to the roadway to alert drivers. A questionnaire survey to various state Departments of Transportation showed that grooved rumble strips are superior in performance to raised ones. Four different grooved design patterns of 3 and 4 in. wide, 1/2 in. deep and tapered or straight edge were developed. These patterns, with a combination of rumble strip pad configurations, were developed for permanent installation at seven different locations. For temporary installation, three raised and three grooved rumble strip pads were installed in advance of a lane drop at two work zone locations on I-75 near Findlay, Ohio.

Book excerpt: "A centerline rumble strip (CLRS) is primarily installed on the centerline of undivided two-lane and two-way roadways to alert drivers that they are moving out of their intended travel lane. The main purpose of CLRSs is to reduce cross-over collisions, such as head-ons, opposite-direction sideswipe, and front-to-side crashes, typically caused by inattentive, distracted, drowsy, or fatigued drivers. Despite the safety benefits, CLRSs that were milled over or adjacent to the centerline joint may increase or accelerate the deterioration and degradation of the pavement structure, which has been observed in Nebraska pavements. In this research project, new (or modified) CLRS designs were sought to reduce pavement damage, while satisfying the safety purpose of CLRSs. ... Model simulation results demonstrated that pavements with CLRSs showed higher stress than pavements without CLRSs. In addition, each CLRS design induced different stress distributions (and damage potential) due to different tire-pavement contact. ... This research provides preliminary insights into how a modified CLRS design can reduce the pavement damage, while the findings should be validated through field testing in a follow-up effort" (leaf ii).

Book excerpt: Center line rumble strips (CLRSs) and shoulder rumble strips (SRSs) are proven countermeasures for reducing roadway departure crashes, including head-on and run-off-road crashes. The objectives of this project were twofold. The first objective was to develop a rumble strip decision support guide to inform agencies on CLRS and SRS installation. The second objective was to document the current state of the practice for CLRS and SRS installation, conduct a gap analysis, and provide a framework for future research related to further implementation of rumble strips. This research includes a literature review detailing research related to rumble strip design, noise and vibration testing methods and findings, impacts on bicyclists and motorcyclists, pavement condition impacts, pavement marking visibility, operational effectiveness, and safety effectiveness. The project also reviewed current department policies and standard drawings for rumble strip implementation strategies, systematic installation criteria, currently used rumble strip dimensions, high-crash corridor installation practices, and special considerations and rumble strip modifications. This report details the development of the decision support guide and includes a gap analysis and action plan for future rumble strip research. Future research can help agencies identify the optimal rumble strip design for installations.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this study were to evaluate available foil-back and removable tapes as well as construction-zone raised pavement markers and to recommend materials that should be included on approved lists for use by the Kentucky Department of Highways. Tapes and markers were placed on transverse test sections and the reflectivity, durability, and appearance were observed. Tapes to be included on the approved lists for foil-back and removable tapes were recommended. Tapes manufactured by 3M, Flex-O-Lite, Cataphote, and Swarolite were included on the list of acceptable foil-back tapes. Recommended removable tapes were the 3M and Cataphote removable tapes. Stimsonite 66 and Flex-O-Lite construction-zone markers were included on the approved list for construction-zone raised pavement markers. More specific guidelines were developed to use in future evaluations of construction-zone preformed tape and markers.
