Book excerpt: In her fourth book of memoirs, Margaret Wharton continues her G.I. bride reminiscences as she paints a picture of life in England before, during, and after World War II. Emphasizing the years from her arrival in the United States until her retirement in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, she tells of her initial homesickness as she is assimilated into a new way of life and describes her years as a housewife in a small suburban town as she raises two sons and resumes her teaching career. She relates the many travels that she and her husband made together, the accounts taken from the detailed journals she assiduously kept of the trips. She also tells something of the Southern family she married into and goes on to talk of the retirement life she and her husband lead in Chapel Hill. Her book is a highly polished piece of work comprising an ingenious blend of people, places, history, geography, and literature. Mrs. Wharton has a vast knowledge of history and excellent control of language along with a vivid descriptive flair. She reproduces her experiences with clarity and conviction. Talk of Many Things offers a colorful, informative, and individual account of a unique experience shared by a number of young women, not only from England, but from many other countries, in the immediate post war years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Go hunting and fishing with Mike Yurk in Hunters Moon, Fishermans Sun. It is a collection of twenty two stories that will take you from Alaska to Key West with a lot of time in the upper Mid West where Mike grew up and still lives. It begins with memories of opening day of the fishing season and ends with a long winter followed by two more opening days. In between we fish for halibut in Alaska, hunt pheasants in South Dakota and get a fish fry in Key West. We go back with Mike to when he was a boy and young man learning to hunt. He takes us with him hunting for big ducks on a big lake, a pond where he hunted for geese, the joys of hunting on Saturdays, and shooting rabbits in the snow. We go ice fishing when the walleyes went nuts on his favorite home lake and again on a northern Minnesota lake where friends gather in the winter for a special ice fishing event. The stories move from the past to the present. There are memories of Lake Michigan as a boy to many years later catching salmon there. There are recollections of fishing with his grandfather and father on a beloved river to now teaching his grandson to fish for bass. There are the days of unlimited joy of summer vacation as a boy to a perfect summer day catching smallmouth bass as a much older fisherman. The stories are more then just catching fish or shooting game. They are about people, both in the past and present, and the impact they have on the days of a hunters moon or a fishermans sun.

Book excerpt: This book is more than a biography of kings and queens; it is an encyclopaedic work on every aspect of monarchy in Britain from semi-legendary times to the present day. Arranged in an A-Z format, it includes mini biographies on each of the forty-two kings and queens who have ruled since the Norman Conquest, details of the royal lines in Scotland before the Act of Union, the background to the royal houses of Britain and the consorts – largely foreign – who have married into the monarchy. Royal scandals, wars, ceremonies, households, tombs and insignia make fascinating reading, and this book is the ideal reference work for all those who want to know more about individual monarchs and the impressive legacy of myths, traditions, beliefs and practices that have grown up around the institution of the monarchy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1930 biography of Prussian World War I General and Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, who went on to become President of the Weimar Republic, written by journalist husband-and-wife team Margaret Goldsmith and Frederick Voigt. Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934) was a German military officer, statesman, and politician who largely controlled German policy in the second half of World War I and served as the elected President of Germany from 1925 until his death in 1934. He played the key role in the Nazi “Seizure of Power” in January 1933 by appointing Adolf Hitler chancellor of a “Government of National Concentration.” Hindenburg first came to national attention during World War I at the age of 66 as the victor of the decisive Battle of Tannenberg in August 1914. As Germany’s Chief of the General Staff from August 1916, Hindenburg’s reputation rose greatly in German public esteem. He and his deputy Erich Ludendorff then led Germany in a de facto military dictatorship throughout the remainder of the war, marginalizing German Emperor Wilhelm II as well as the German Reichstag. Hindenburg was elected the second President of Germany in 1925 and, considered the only candidate who could defeat Hitler, ran for re-election in 1932. He became a major player in the increasing political instability in the Weimar Republic that ended with Hitler’s rise to power, dissolved the Reichstag twice in 1932, and, finally, under pressure, agreed to appoint Hitler Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. In March he signed the Enabling Act of 1933, which gave Hitler’s regime arbitrary powers. Hindenburg died the following year, after which Hitler declared the office of President vacant and made himself head of state.
