Book Synopsis Channelized Rivers by : Andrew Brookes
Download or read book Channelized Rivers written by Andrew Brookes and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1988 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Channelized Rivers Perspectives for Environmental Management Andrew Brookes Environmental Consultant, Reading, UK For centuries engineers have modified river channels in order to control floods, drain land, prevent erosion and improve navigation. The natural shape of many rivers has been dramatically changed, often with dire environmental consequences. This book demonstrates the role fluvial geomorphology can play in the design of river channels, both to lessen environmental impact and to enhance the success of channelization schemes. It considers the physical and biological impacts of channelization, the repercussions downstream and in the adjacent floodplain. Revised procedures and designs are proposed which minimize harsh environmental impacts. The interdisciplinary approach of the book offers river managers the opportunity to make more environmentally sensitive decisions in the course of their work. The book will be of great interest to geomorphologists, biologists and civil engineers working in the water industry.

Book excerpt: Antelope Hill is a prominent fixture on the landscape of the lower Gila River in southwestern Arizona. Archaeologists know the hill as the largest and most impressive milling implement quarry in the western United States, with tools made from Antelope Hill sandstone found at sites stretching for hundreds of miles up and down the Gila and Colorado rivers. According to modern Native Americans, the hill was a no-man's-land in a hotly contested region, and the hundreds of rock art images that adorn the hill attest to its use by many peoples over many years. The hill was also used by more-recent migrants. Spanish explorers camped at Antelope Hill; fur trappers passed by; Mexican and American military expeditions left their marks in the rocks, as did many on their way to seek their fortune in gold in California. The archaeology, ethnography, and history of Antelope Hill are presented here in a unique format. The handsome book reports on the findings of archival research, oral histories, and archaeological excavation and analysis. The accompanying CD-ROM presents color images of rock art as well as a video of the archaeology of Antelope Hill and nearby sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents, for the first time, a much-needed synthesis of the major research themes and findings that characterize the Woodland Period in the southeastern United States. The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Of interest to archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur, this will be a valuable reference work essential to understanding the Woodland Period in the Southeast.
