We think the opposition to our enterprise arises either from commercial, political or domestic connections with Slavery, or from misapprehensions respecting our principles, measures and prospects. We desire no better means of overcoming these obstacles than a fair statement of facts; and to this we now solicit your attention. Declaration Of Sentiments. We believe that all men are born free and equal, and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We believe Slavery is an infraction of these rights, a violation of the principles of Christianity, and under all circumstances sinful. We believe that Slavery is a great national evil, political as well as moral, opposed to the genius of a republican government, highly dangerous to the peace and permanency of the Union, and if persisted in, destined to bring upon us the severest judgments of Heaven. We believe the immediate abolition of slavery would be safe and wise, and that it is the duty of every friend of humanity to use all fair and just means for its accomplishment. We believe we have a right to express and publish our opinions respecting the customs and institutions of the people of this and every other country; and if we think them in any degree immoral, unequal, or oppressive, we are under the highest obligations, in the exercise of all honest and lawful means, to change them. We believe that Slavery in the several states can be lawfully abolished only by the legislatures of the states in which it prevails, and that the exercise of any other than moral means to induce such abolition, is unconstitutional. We believe that Congress has a right to abolish Slavery in the District of Columbia, and in the Territories, and to prohibit the slave trade between the states, and that the exercise of this right is required by the divine law, an 4 by the interests of our country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Slavery My original design, was to lay before the Public a free and impartial sketch of negro slavery as it now exists in the island of Barbadoes; to show how it would be affected by the abolition of the slave-trade; and to prove by arguments, founded on facts, the natural equality of the natives of the immense continent of Africa to the rest of mankind. - I am conscious, I have not wilfully misstated or exaggerated any one circumstance; and I have written with the caution of a man who expects to meet with the most pertinacious contradiction. - To give as agreeable an air, as I could, to a subject in itself dull and disgusting, I have preferred the looser form of letters to the formality of a regular treatise. - The sketch I have given of the state of slavery in Jamaica was no part of my plan, but was drawn after that plan was compleated. This I hope will apologize for some repetitions in the latter part of my book. The name and authority of an author have perhaps greater weight with some readers than his arguments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address, Delivered Before the Portsmouth Anti-Slavery Society At the Annual Meeting of the Portsmouth Anti-Slavery Society, on the 4th day of July, 1839, the following resolutions, viz: "Resolved, That the existence of Slavery in our Union is incompatible with the genius of our political institutions, and a virtual renunciation of the self-evident truths relating to the natural equality and the inalienable rights of man, as set forth in the Declaration of Independence - that the rapid increase and extension of Slavery, as tending to undermine the foundations of virtue and morality, the Christian Religion, and civil liberty, is a subject which ought to excite the most fearful apprehensions of the friends of freedom. "Resolved, That the abolition of the whole system of Southern Slavery is demanded by the dictates of humanity - the immutable principles of justice - and the interests and welfare of the whole nation: " being under consideration, Mr. Claggett addressed the meeting, as follows: - Mr. President: - When the constitution of the United States was adopted, nearly fifty-two years ago, the number of persons held in bondage in the thirteen United States, probably exceeded six hundred thousands. By the census of 1790, the whole number was 697,897. The present number may be estimated at three millions. We have thus the startling - the appalling fact, that in the lapse of about half a century, there has been an increase of slaves in this land of freedom, this boasted "asylum of oppressed humanity," of nearly two millions and an half.
