Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I called myself a Christian because I wore a cross, prayed to God and attended church regularly. Yet, I lied, gossiped, and judged others without mercy. I misrepresented my God with my behavior, attitude, and words. Such was my life. In my prayers I asked for God to use my life to glorify Him, but was ill prepared for the response. I was arrested and charged with a felony! In deep and dark despair, I turned to Jesus Christ for help, and He was there to save me, as I sorrowfully repented for my past sinful behavior! Jesus transformed my heart and I was blessed with unimaginable peace and joy. This is the story of the healing power found through Jesus Christ. I am living proof that people can change and that choosing to live a righteous and holy life brings joy.

Book excerpt: Part of Alphonse Mingana's "Woodbrooke Studies" (of which the present book is volume 2), The Apology of Timothy the Patriarch before the Caliph Mahdi is accompanied in this volume by The Lament of the Virgin and The Martyrdom of Pilate. The namesake of the volume, Timothy's apology for Christianity, is an eighth-century manuscript and one of the earliest documents concerning Christianity's relationship with Islam. The Lament of the Virgin is Mary's sadness at the empty tomb; in this piece she is conflated with Mary Magdalene. The Martyrdom of Pilate presents Pontius Pilate as a saint and lays out his spiritual accomplishments that are crowned by his martyrdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely new work by one of France’s premier philosophers, A Brief Apology for a Catholic Moment offers insight into what “catholic” truly means. In this short, accessible book, Jean-Luc Marion braids the sense of catholic as all-embracing and universal into conversation about what it is to be Catholic in the present moment. A Brief Apology for a Catholic Moment tackles complex issues surrounding church-state separation and addresses a larger Catholic audience that transcends national boundaries, social identities, and linguistic differences. Marion insists that Catholic universalism, with its core of communion and community, is not an outmoded worldview, but rather an outlook that has the potential to counter the positivist rationality and nihilism at the core of our current political moment, and can help us address questions surrounding liberalism and religion and what is often presented as tension between “Islam and the West.” As an inviting and sophisticated Catholic take on current political and social realities—realities that are not confined to France alone—A Brief Apology for a Catholic Moment is a valuable contribution to a larger conversation.

These are the 'logos doctrine', the 'theft theory', the 'proof from prophecy' and the arguments from demons. David E. Nyström analyses them in order to create a picture of how they work together, rhetorically and literarily, in Justin's grand argument.

Book excerpt: Against many expectations, religion has not vanished from Western culture. People are troubled and fascinated in equal measure by this new visibility and are unsure whether it is right to (re)incorporate the vocabulary of faith into our common life. This unprecedented co-existence of religion and secularism is sometimes termed the ""postsecular,"" and in this book Elaine Graham considers some of its implications for the public witness of Christianity. She argues that everyone, from church leaders, theologians, local activists, and campaigners, needs to learn again how to ""speak Christian"" in these contexts. They need to articulate credible theological justifications for their involvement in public life and to justify the very relevance of their faith to a culture that no longer grants automatic privilege or credence. This entails a retrieval of the ancient practice of apologetics, in order to encourage and equip Christians to defend and commend their core principles and convictions in public. This ""new apologetics"" involves discerning the actions of God in the world, participating in the praxis of God's mission and bearing witness in word and deed. Rather than being an adversarial or argumentative process, this is an invitation to dialogue and to the rejuvenation of our public life. ""Here is fresh thinking on how to make a theological contribution to the common good in a post-secular world, where religion is resurgent, resisted, and optional in the public sphere. With characteristic clarity and erudition, Elaine Graham invites us to see public theology as the new apologetics--not arguing for one's beliefs against skeptics, but making the case for God's presence in the world by the lives we live there, shaped by the Christian story."" --William Storrar, Center of Theological Inquiry, Princeton ""This book addresses the vital issue of how to communicate faith in a post-secular world in which religion is often framed as a site of hostile struggle. Elaine Graham points us towards an emerging Christian apologetics that is committed, critical, and creative. In its dedication to dialogue and the common good, this apologetics performs its sacred obligation by placing love of neighbor at its embodied core."" --Heather Walton, Professor of Theology and Creative Practice, University of Glasgow ""This book advances an impressive and inspiring concept of apologetic as a contextual, public theology. Bringing together perspectives from traditional apologetic writings and current theological thinking, it convinces the reader that today more than ever the Christian mission must be performed in word and deed, working together with people from other faiths and none for the common good. Thus, it lays a sound theoretical basis for diverse areas of Christian practice."" --Manfred L. Pirner, Chair of Religious Education, Director of the Research Unit for Public Religion and Education, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany ""How is one meant to 'speak Christian' in a post-secular society? In Apologetics without Apology, Elaine Graham furnishes a highly elaborate answer to this urgent question. Building on a lucid examination of our current situation, she convincingly sets out the contours of an ambitious apologetic project that claims to be no less than part of the missio Dei."" --Christoph Hubenthal; Professor of Systematic Theology, Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, Center for Catholic Studies, Radboud University Nijmegen ""This timely publication by Elaine Graham enhances the constructive involvement of religious and secular faiths in public life. She develops a new and constructive apologetics that provides us with an ethos and grammar, skills and modes for the public involvement of faith in pluralistic contexts. This book equips us to show hospitality to a plurality of perspectives in churches, broader society, and the academy. Moreover, it strengthens us to impact transformatively upon pluralistic p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Lillian Daniel apologized to a total stranger for every bad thing that had ever been said or done in the name of Christianity, he was surprised that she was responsible for all that. "The Inquisition? Don't even raise it, I'm way ahead of you. I was mad about it before you even heard of it, that's how open-minded I am. Salem witch trials? I know! So embarrassing. Can I hang out with you anyway? You're too kind." "Religion is responsible for all the wars in history," they would say, and I'd respond, "You're so right. Don't forget imperialism, capitalism, and racism. Religion invented those problems too. You can tell that because religious people can be found at all their meetings." In this book, Daniel argues that it's time for Christians to stop apologizing and realize that how we talk about Christian community matters. With disarming candor laced with just the right amount of humor, Daniel urges open-minded Christians to explore ways to talk about their faith journeys that are reasonable, rigorous, and real. After the publication of the much talked about When Spiritual But Not Religious Is Not Enough: Seeing God In Surprising Places, Even the Church, Lillian Daniel heard from many SBNRs as well as practicing Christians. It was the Christians who scolded her for her forthright, unapologetic stand as one who believes that religious community matters. The Christians ranted that Christians, by definition, tend to be judgmental, condemning hypocrites, which is why people hate them. By saying religion matters, she was judging those who disagree, they said, proving the stereotype of Christians. Better to acknowledge all that's wrong with Christianity and its history, then apologize. In this book, Daniel shows why it matters how we talk about Christian community while urging open-minded Christians to learn better ways to talk about their faith.

This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Apology is supposed to have been written as a supplement to the First Apology of Justin Martyr, on account of certain proceedings which had in the mean time taken place in Rome before Lollius Urbicus as prefect of the city, which must have been between 150 and 157. The Apology is addressed to the Roman Senate. The Second Apology was meant to expose the real reasons behind the recent persecutions of Christians under Urbicus. It also tried to expose the utter irrationality of allegations and propaganda spread against the Christians. Justin recounts the story of a certain woman who on hearing the teachings of Jesus and having become a Christian refused to comply with the immoral practices of her husband. Because the disagreements were severe she desired to be divorced, but not being encouraged to do so, she continued in that relationship until one day when it became ethically unlivable, and she gave him a bill of divorce. The husband retaliated by bringing accusations against her before the Emperor. But when he couldn't do anything against her, he turned against the Christian leaders whom Urbicus the prefect began to severely persecute.
