This book was released on 2009-11-18 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A passage from the book... John Evelyn (1620-1706) was an English writer, gardener and diarist. His diaries are largely contemporaneous with those of the other noted diarist of the time, Samuel Pepys, and cast considerable light on the art, culture and politics of the time (he witnessed the deaths of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, the last Great Plague of London, and the Great Fire of London in 1666. ). Evelyn and Pepys corresponded frequently and much of this correspondence has been preserved. It was after the Restoration that Evelyn's career really took off. In 1660, he was a member of the group that founded the Royal Society. The following year, he wrote the Fumifugium (or The Inconveniencie of the Aer and Smoak of London Dissipated), the first book written on the growing pollution problem in London. He was known for his knowledge of trees, and his treatise Sylva; or, Discourse on Forest Trees (1664) was written as an encouragement to landowners to plant trees to provide timber for England's burgeoning navy.On October 24, 1659, a quarto pamphlet was published in London with thefollowing title: "The Army's Plea for Their present Practice: tendered tothe consideration of all ingenuous and impartial men. Printed andpublished by special command. London, Printed by Henry Hills, Printer tothe Army, dwelling in Aldersgate Street next door to the Peacock. 1659".Three days afterwards, on October 27, John Evelyn had finished writing ananswer, which was published a week later, on November 4, under the title:"An Apologie for the Royal Party ... With a Touch At the pretended Pleafor the Army. Anno Dom. MDCLIX".

Book excerpt: The essays on taste taken from the work of John Gilbert Cooper and John Armstrong and reprinted in this issue are of interest and value to the student of the eighteenth century because they typify the shifting attitudes toward taste held by most mid-century poets and critics. Cooper, who accepts the Shaftesbury-Hutchinsonian thesis of the internal sense, emphasizes the personal, ecstatic effect of taste. Armstrong, while accepting the rationalist notions of clarity and simplicity, attacks methodized rules and urges reliance on individuality.

Book excerpt: "Dissertation on the Progress of the Fine Arts" by John Robert Scott is a study that embodies what we can now see as a final development in his century's deep concern to understand why the greatest art had somehow not been forthcoming in what it as often claimed was the greatest century. The main interest lies in Scott's notions of the kind of society needed to produce major art, and beyond hoping to make it a reality in his own time. He chooses to write almost entirely about the fine arts. Some important personalities included in this book include William III (England) Henry IV (France), Cardinal Ximenes, Cardinal Richelieu, Augustus Cæsar, Lewis XIV, etc.

Book excerpt: "Critical Strictures on the New Tragedy of Elvira, Written by Mr. David Malloch" is a literary critique of the play by the eighteenth century Scottish poet and dramatist. The play Elvira was essentially a translation or adaptation of Lamotte-Houdar's French tragedy Inès de Castro, a piece published forty years before, but the English audience of 1763 saw in it a compliment to the King of Portugal, whose cause against Spain Great Britain had espoused towards the end of the Seven Years' War. This novel examines the heavy political and romantic themes of the play.
