Book Synopsis An Annotated Bibliography of Antarctic Invertebrates (terrestrial and Freshwater) by : William Block
Download or read book An Annotated Bibliography of Antarctic Invertebrates (terrestrial and Freshwater) written by William Block and published by Balogh Scientific Books. This book was released on 1992 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aims behind the bibliography are threefold: to collate information and data from the literature on Antarctic terrestrial and freshwater invertebrate animals, to provide a cross-referenced, indexed information system, and to make a preliminary lisiting of species records. Literature survey covers the period from the earliest South Polar Expedition on which invertebrates were recorded (1922-25) to the end of 1990. The bibliography comprises in excess of 1400 entries; the indexes provide a classification of invertebrates, taxonomic and species lists, an author index, a general subject index, a geographical or location index and a list of expeditions on which invertebrates were found.

This book was released on 2007-06-04 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Antarctic provides a suite of scenarios useful for investigating the range of climate change effects on terrestrial and limnetic biota. The purpose of the book is to provide, based on the most up to date knowledge, a synthesis of the likely effects of climate change on Antarctic terrestrial and limnetic ecosystems and, thereby, to contribute to their management and conservation, based on the information.
Book Synopsis Mites: Ecology, Evolution & Behaviour by : David Evans Walter
Download or read book Mites: Ecology, Evolution & Behaviour written by David Evans Walter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 40,000 species of mites have been described, and up to 1 million may exist on earth. These tiny arachnids play many ecological roles including acting as vectors of disease, vital players in soil formation, and important agents of biological control. But despite the grand diversity of mites, even trained biologists are often unaware of their significance. Mites: Ecology, Evolution and Behaviour (2nd edition) aims to fill the gaps in our understanding of these intriguing creatures. It surveys life cycles, feeding behaviour, reproductive biology and host-associations of mites without requiring prior knowledge of their morphology or taxonomy. Topics covered include evolution of mites and other arachnids, mites in soil and water, mites on plants and animals, sperm transfer and reproduction, mites and human disease, and mites as models for ecological and evolutionary theories.
Book Synopsis Biology of the Springtails by : Stephen P. Hopkin
Download or read book Biology of the Springtails written by Stephen P. Hopkin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1997-02-27 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Springtails are the most numerous and wide-spread insects in terrestrial ecosystems. They are important ecotoxicological test organisms and have been used extensively to indicate the effects of environmental pollutants and different agricultural regimes on biodiversity in soils. This comprehensive work by the co-author of The biology of millipedes is the only single-volume review of the biology of springtails in the English language to appear this century. The book covers classification, behaviour, physiology, evolution, ecology, and ecotoxicology. An extensive reference section with more than 2500 entries is included together with a complete list of all Collembola genera, a list of studies on the effects of chemicals on springtails, and reference to species checklists for most countries of the world.

Book excerpt: This is the first reference guide to focus on the polar and cold regions of the world as a whole. It is divided into three sections. Part 1 provides an overview of the literature on polar and cold regions, analysing the nature of polar literature which exhibits certain unusual features, particularly in the role played by expedition reports. Part 2 is a select bibliography, and Part 3 is an international directory of organizations related to the subject. A detailed index completes the work.
Book Synopsis Foundations for Ecological Research West of the Antarctic Peninsula by : Robin M. Ross
Download or read book Foundations for Ecological Research West of the Antarctic Peninsula written by Robin M. Ross and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1996-01-09 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Antarctic Research Series, Volume 70. The Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program was established in 1981 by the United States National Science Foundation in recognition of the need to study ecological processes over time spans longer than those of most research grants. The LTER Network now consists of 18 sites that span a variety of ecosystem types in the continental United States, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Antarctica. The addition of the Palmer LTER at Palmer Station, Antarctica in October 1990 extended the geographical and ecological range of the LTER Network and provided the opportunity to link physical and ecological processes in the northern and southern hemispheres. One criterion for establishment of a LTER site is the existence of historical data and observations that can provide a basis for guiding research programs. Thus, the intent of this volume is to bring together meteorological, hydrographical, biological and ecological observations made in the general area west of the Antarctic Peninsula and to discuss the processes underlying the observations. This compilation of available data and observations in conjunction with the present understanding of processes provides the foundation for long?]term studies of the ecosystem in the western Antarctic Peninsula region.
