Book Synopsis The Silent Qur'an and the Speaking Qur'an by : Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi
Download or read book The Silent Qur'an and the Speaking Qur'an written by Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two major events occurred in the early centuries of Islam that determined its historical and spiritual development in the centuries that followed: the formation of the sacred scriptures, namely the Qur'an and the Hadith, and the chronic violence that surrounded the succession of the Prophet, manifesting in repression, revolution, massacre, and civil war. This is the first book to evaluate the writing of Islam's major scriptural sources within the context of these bloody, brutal conflicts. Conducting a philological and historical study of little-known though significant ancient texts, Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi rebuilds a Shi'ite understanding of Islam's early history and the genesis of its holy scriptures. At the same time, he proposes a fresh interpretative framework and a new data set for theorizing the early history of Islam, isolating the contradictions between Shi'ite and Sunni sources and their contribution to the tensions that rile these groups today.
Book Synopsis John of Damascus and Islam by : Peter Schadler
Download or read book John of Damascus and Islam written by Peter Schadler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Islam come to be considered a Christian heresy? In this book, Peter Schadler outlines the intellectual background of the Christian Near East that led John, a Christian serving in the court of the caliph in Damascus, to categorize Islam as a heresy. Schadler shows that different uses of the term heresy persisted among Christians, and then demonstrates that John’s assessment of the beliefs and practices of Muslims has been mistakenly dismissed on assumptions he was highly biased. The practices and beliefs John ascribes to Islam have analogues in the Islamic tradition, proving that John may well represent an accurate picture of Islam as he knew it in the seventh and eighth centuries in Syria and Palestine.
Book Synopsis Textual Criticism and Qur'an Manuscripts by : Keith E. Small
Download or read book Textual Criticism and Qur'an Manuscripts written by Keith E. Small and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011-04-22 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique work takes a method of textual analysis commonly used in studies of ancient Western and Eastern manuscripts and applies it to twenty-one early Qur'an manuscripts. Keith Small analyzes a defined portion of text from the Qur'an with two aims in view: to recover the earliest form of text for this portion, and to trace the historical development of this portion to the current form of the text of the Qur'an. Small concludes that though a significantly early edited form of the consonantal text of the Qur'an can be recovered, its original forms of text cannot be obtained. He also documents the further editing that was required to record the Arabic text of the Qur'an in a complete phonetic script, as well as providing an explanation for much of the development of various recitation systems of the Qur'an. This controversial, thought-provoking book provides a rigorous examination into the history of the Qur'an and will be of great interest to Quranic Studies scholars.

Book Synopsis Syrian Christians under Islam, the First Thousand Years by : David Thomas
Download or read book Syrian Christians under Islam, the First Thousand Years written by David Thomas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers from the Third Woodbrooke-Mingana Symposium on Arab Christianity and Islam (September 1998) on the theme of "Arab Christianity in Bilâd al-Shâm (Greater Syria) in the pre-Ottoman Period". It presents aspects of Syrian Christian life and thought during the first millennium of Islamic rule. Among the eight contributing scholars are Sidney Griffith on ninth-century Christological controversies, Samir K. Samir on the Prophet Muhammed seen through Arab Christian eyes, Lawrence Conrad on the physician Ibn Butlân, and Lucy-Anne Hunt on Muslim influence on Christian book illustrations. There is also a foreword by the Syrian Orthodox Archbishop of Aleppo. The picture that emerges is of community life developing in its own way and finding a distinctive character, as Christians responded to the social and intellectual influences of Islam.
