Book excerpt: This book broadens the scope of the subject of rural education and enlivens the ways in which the subject may be studied. Through textual and visual analysis of a range of sources – including young adult novels, the farming simulation game ‘Hay Day’ and reality television programs – the contributors investigate how the lives of young people in rural spaces are mediated by a range of social locations including class, ethnicity and sexuality. Additionally, through rich and detailed ethnographic work, the book explores the complicated and multifaceted meanings of rural places and examines how these meanings shape experiences of schooling for teachers and students. In doing so, the book embeds the study of rural education in explorations of patrilineal inheritance on family farms, international migration, globalisation and economic restructuring. It aims to start a conversation about the robust and complex ways in which the confluence between ‘rural’ and ‘education’ may be imagined, experienced and researched. This book was originally published as a special issue of Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education.

Book excerpt: Education is a positive construct which empowers people to make use of its potentialities in the best ways to achieve excellence. Research in this endeavour tries to resolve various problems related to education, educational process and educational advancements. Thereby, keeping education updated and advanced in turn preparing updated positive and constructive citizens of the society. Today an educated person is expected to be equipped with the most advanced knowledge, skills, humane values and digitalisation, including evaluation of existing policies and bringing out components & variables to be covered by forthcoming policies. Thus, research is positively correlated with the human and material development, ensuring humane and developed society. The strength of an institution is reflected by the researches undertaken by the members over there. It gives me immense pleasure to note that survey of research abstracts in Faculty of Education, Banaras Hindu University has been completed and ready for its publication in hard and soft mode. The present volume includes 256 abstracts since 1952, including most recent D.Litt. abstract in education. This survey no doubt presents a trend of researches understudy. These abstracts will certainly pave educational paths to solving recent educational issues. A commendable contribution has been done by the team of publication. This will have a long-term impact on future researchers. Moreover, preservation of research knowledge, covering 33 identified educational areas and its dissemination were much needed and expected for the cause of quality research. I am sure, the volume will serve its qualitative purpose to researchers, teachers, administrators and policy-makers in India and abroad. We are grateful to Prof.D.P.Singh, Chairman, University Grants Commission, New Delhi (India) for writing foreword for this volume and motivating us. I convey my heartfelt gratitude to all the members of publication team for their concerted efforts in bringing out this precious volume. Date: 13th April, 2020 (Prof. R.P. Shukla) Banaras Hindu University Head and Dean Varanasi-10 Faculty of Education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No general history of southern farming since the end of slavery has been published until now. For the first time, Gilbert C. Fite has drawn together the many threads that make up commercial agricultural development in the eleven states of the old Confederacy, to explain why agricultural change was so slow in the South, and then to show how the agents of change worked after 1933 to destroy the old and produce a new agriculture. Fite traces the decline and departure of King Cotton as the hard taskmaster of the region, and the replacement of cotton by a somewhat more democratically rewarding group of farm products: poultry, cattle, swine; soybeans; citrus and other fruits; vegetables; rice; dairy products; and forest products. He shows how such crop changes were related to other developments, such as the rise of a capital base in the South, mainly after World War II; technological innovation in farming equipment; and urbanization and regional population shifts. Based largely upon primary sources, Cotton Fields No More will become the standard work on post-Civil War agriculture in the South. It will be welcomed by students of the American South and of United States agriculture, economic, and social history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixth and final volume in the History of Wisconsin series examines the period from 1940-1965, in which state and nation struggled to maintain balance and traditions. Some of the major developments analyzed in this volume include: coping with three wars, racial and societal conflict, technological innovation, population shifts to and from cities and suburbs, and accompanying stress in politics, government, and society as a whole. Using dozens of photographs to visually illustrate this period in the state's history, this volume upholds the high standards set forth in the previous volumes.
