Book excerpt: This book presents leaders and aspiring leaders in community colleges with a theoretical and practical framework for analyzing their leadership styles, and determining the dimensions of leadership they need to improve in order to strengthen their capacity to resolve complex issues and effectively guide their institutions. It does so through presenting theories about leadership that are congruent with the notions of equity, access, diversity, ethics, critical inquiry, transformational change, and social justice that drive the missions of community colleges, and at the same time provides the reader with the strategic skills to prepare for and navigate the profound changes ahead.Readers will gain an understanding of how to use theory as a tool to guide their practice, better understand the intricacies of the issues confronting them, the power dynamics and organizational context in which they operate, predict potential outcomes, and develop processes to achieve desired outcomes. Utilizing theory in conjunction with case study analysis provides community college leaders with the tools needed to comprehensively interrogate and inform decision-making processes. The authors provide a number of rich and realistically complex case studies, all of which are situated in a community college environment, to which readers can apply the various theories and perspectives, develop their view about the principles and actions most likely to lead to satisfactory outcomes, and hone the approaches to leadership that are authentic to them, and effective. The authors aim to help readers develop the multi-faceted approach to leadership that is essential to running complex organizations. They aim to promote development of the “whole” leader through a three-fold framework of theory, practice, and introspection in context of institutional change. In doing so, leaders will be better equipped to lead community colleges in challenging times. The authors tie AACC’s competencies to the leadership theories they cover, as well as to the analysis of the case studies, and leadership inventories, as an essential framework for developing the skill sets to enact the community college mission. The book is suitable for personal reading and reflection, institutional leadership retreats and training, and as a text for higher education courses.

Book excerpt: An extensive review of the literature suggested the nation's community colleges are quickly approaching a leadership crisis as current leaders are fast approaching retirement. In response, community colleges are investing a significant amount of time and money to develop their own leaders. The purpose of this study was to examine the curriculum content of an in-house leadership development program at a large multi-campus metropolitan community college. Transformational leadership theory and the American Association of Community Colleges' (AACC) Competencies for Community College Leaders served to inform and direct this study. The researcher utilized a mixed-method evaluative case study approach to determine participants' demographic characteristics and to what extent transformational leadership theory and AACC's competencies were embedded within the curriculum. Findings from the study indicated participants of the program represented a wide range of employees throughout the organization. The study also identified facets of AACC's competencies and transformational leadership theory were embedded within the curriculum to varying degrees. Implications of the study will help guide the institution in reviewing the program's curriculum content, structure, and rigor. Findings suggest the importance of developing programs that meet the needs and expectations of participants. In addition, the study's research, methodology, survey instrument, and findings can serve as a resource to assist institutions looking to evaluate or develop a leadership development program.

Book excerpt: "The focus of this dissertation is on transformational leadership at publicly supported institutions of higher education in urban and metropolitan settings. A quantitative analysis was performed to study the perception of the transformational leadership skills of presidents of such universities. Overall, this dissertation will explore three subgroups of the university community--faculty, staff and administrators--and their perceptions of the transformational leadership qualities of their current university president. Transformational leaders tend to serve as guiding, mentoring coaches. They possess vision and charisma and they inspire employees to perform beyond expectations for the good of the organization. Bass and Avolio list four factors that define transformational leadership: idealized influence (charisma); inspirational motivation; intellectual stimulation; and individualized consideration (Bass and Avolio, 1993) (Table 1). Transformational leadership, when properly enacted, can result in greater organizational effectiveness, greater employee commitment to the mission and organization, employee willingness to exert extra effort, higher moral and motivational levels and emotional responses such as inspiration to excel and attachment to the leader (Stoner-Zemel, 1991). The intellectual offspring of Burns' transformational theory place emphasis on vision, values, empowerment, trust, culture and leader-follower relationships that comprise coaching, teaching and counseling. As leaders and managers confront the dynamic demands of the twenty-first century, it is believed that the twentieth century hierarchical, bureaucratic, managerial, controlling model will decrease in its effectiveness and its ability to energize and help to coordinate knowledge workers (Cleveland, 1985). An emerging conceptualization of leadership that includes the attributes of being transformational, visionary, values-based, developing, inspiring and empowering offers a viable approach to contemporary organizational coordination (Fairholm, 1991). This research focused on faculty, staff and administrators at 20 public urban colleges and universities in the U.S. (Appendix A), and detailed their perceptions of the transformational leadership skills of their presidents."--Abstract

Book excerpt: Leadership skills are a necessary part of the preparation of community college students for university transfer or employment. However, the development of leadership skills for traditional-age community college students can be challenging based on al traits and issues related to the community college context. The purpose of this study was to explore the perception of leadership and personal development of leadership skills among traditional-age community college students. After collecting data through interviews with thirteen traditional-age community college students, general inductive analysis was utilized to investigate the perceptions and experiences related to leadership development. By using the leadership identity development theory as a theoretical framework, analysis resulted in the themes Defining Leadership, which included leadership identity, influence, qualities of effective leaders, and qualities of ineffective leaders; and Developing Leadership, which consisted of the impact of others, impact of personal experiences, and perceptions of personal leadership development. Participants reported varied movement through the leadership identity development model based on both the examples of others and personal experiences. Millennial generational traits were both beneficial and challenging to leadership development, as was the context of the community college. Performing arts students also exhibited a more developed leadership identity than did participants involved in athletics. Community college faculty, staff, and administrators can find relevance in these findings as they continue to assist students in developing leadership skills. Additional research in organizational-based leadership development, as well as continued research on the impact of experience in leadership identity development, is needed.

What model or theory do we utilize? The choices become overwhelming for anyone attempting online searches. Everywhere you look are leadership books, programs, degrees, workshops, seminars, boot camps, and even mobile apps! Many organizations at Air University are utilizing the full range of leadership approach. Initially introduced by James MacGregor Burns in 1978 and Bernard Bass in1985, these transformational and transactional leadership styles have sustained nearly four decades. Through (1) idealized transformational leader behaviors, one may raise the levels of his or her ethical and moral values while committing to "doing the right thing" for himself or herself and his or her followers: (2) by using inspirational motivation, leaders learn to articulate a vision to energize followers to accomplish more than they ever thought possible; (3) by intellectually stimulating followers, leaders will challenge followers to create and innovate as they reframe problems with renewed visions; and by providing individualized consideration, leaders may learn to incorporate each member's distinct gifts and talents as individual contributors to the organizational team. These transformational behaviors can offer connections to reaching (4) authentic transformational leadership by incorporating not only ethics and values but also, according to John Sosik, virtues and character strengths to refine one's leadership acumen, ameliorating leader-follower dynamics

Book excerpt: This book brings together a collection of chapters with different research designs that explore the research, practice, and policies of community colleges. The chapters in this book are the result of the graduate students and their faculty mentor’s scholarly work, and a rigorous special issue’s peer review process. Furthermore, this book offers recommendations on how to mentor graduate students, in the absence of research and mentorship on how to publish for graduate students and practitioner-scholars, as well as recognizing that graduate programs and professional associations are important on the socialization of practitioner-scholars. Each book chapter addresses the implications for practice and future research, policy for community colleges, and recommendation for change indicated by the research results. Five broad research themes, higher education policy, leadership practices and roles, network community, student success, and technology, emerged from the empirical articles and critical reviews. A final chapter shares advice and lessons learned from the 30 authors and mentors. With the exception of Chapter 14, the chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Community College Journal of Research and Practice.

Book excerpt: Used as a university textbook, this groundbreaking research by Dr. Mark Ellis examines the bilateral dimensions of transformational leadership within the context of higher education. Since its inception over 30 years ago, transformational leadership has rapidly become known as an effective leadership model. The positive effects of transformational leadership on organizational constituency have been clearly supported by research. However, the inner dimensions of transformational leadership have undergone extremely limited empirical study. The major components of transformational leadership consist of inspirational motivation, idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. This research further investigates transformational leadership beyond these four characteristics by focusing on two variables identified as bilateral dimensions.

This volume brings together leading international scholars across disciplines to chronicle the current state of leadership education and establish a solid foundation on which to grow the field. It encourages leadership educators to explore and communicate more clearly the theoretical underpinnings and conceptual assumptions on which their approaches are based. It provides a forum for the discussion of current issues and challenges in the field and examines the above objectives within the broader perspective of rapid changes in technology, organizational structure, and diversity.
