Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes in detail how to create a strategic plan to identify and meet the requirements of any organization. A solid survey of the techniques of the subject. --Long Range Planning "I′ve finally had an opportunity to read through (this) remarkable guide to strategic planning. (It has) indeed captured the critical elements of this important if messy process. All of this is, of course, applicable to universities, and some of it could even be done without causing riots and revolutions. Every one of us who does university administration should probably read your book, if only to recognize what we are not able to do for lack of good data and good analytical tools." --John V. Lombardi, President, University of Florida "Dr. Kaufman′s approach to strategic planning is new, different, and innovative . . . the target audience of middle managers and executives should find the book an important informational source for achieving organizational and societal objectives. Furthermore, it will probably provide some interesting dialogue at strategic planning sessions." --Melvin T. Stith, Ph.D., Dean, College of Business, Florida State University "Just when the detrimental effects of trendy, short-term, process-oriented management practices are beginning to dramatically weaken altogether too many organizations, along comes Strategic Planning Plus. This book is a solid, reality-based management guide. It is filled with helpful advice and procedures that can improve your odds of doing the right things and doing them well. Reading it will give you a new perspective on the importance and value of planning for organizational success. Putting it to work in your organization can be a driving force in your long-term success." --Wess Roberts, Ph.D., Author, Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun "A fresh approach to a timeworn subject . . . I believe planning is something all managers would like to do better." --Peter Economy, Director of Administration Horizons Technology, Inc., San Diego, California Current strategic planning and development is often too myopic, and much more must be considered before practical planning is accomplished. Filled with fresh, new ideas and proven methods, Strategic Planning Plus covers strategic planning at three levels--micro, macro, and mega--and describes, in detail, how to create a strategic plan to identify and meet the requirements of any organization. This book shows how to identify the direction an organization must take, gives a six-step process for identifying and solving organizational problems, and provides methods for evaluating progress and revising strategic plans. Strategic Planning Plus also contains handy checklists, flowcharts, procedures, and case studies.

Book excerpt: Community college leaders face unprecedented change, and some have begun reexamining their institutional strategic planning processes. Yet, studies in higher education strategic planning spend little time examining how community colleges formulate their strategic plans. This mixed-method qualitative study used an expert sampling method to identify three AQIP-accredited community colleges in one Midwestern state that were viewed as leaders in strategic planning. Using their AQIP Systems Portfolios and interviews with their senior leadership, this study examined these colleges’ strategic planning perspectives (i.e., the “point of view” that an organization has chosen to use as a basis for formulating their strategic plan) and processes (i.e., the series of actions, changes, or functions to achieve a desired result). This study also examined the extent to which these institutional leaders perceived that their strategic planning process added “value” to their institution. To examine strategic planning perspectives and processes at these institutions two different theoretical frameworks (i.e., Goodman and Willekens (2001) and Mintzberg et al.'s (1998) 10 strategic perspectives) were used. Goodman and Willekens’ research was updated to reflect the AQIP accreditation pathway, and a crosswalk was created to determine which, if any, of Mintzberg et al.'s 10 strategic perspectives were present at these community colleges. Key findings revealed both familiar and distinctive elements of strategic planning processes across the institutions under investigation. Instead of the three phases of strategic planning suggested in the literature, these institutions exhibited five phases, adding phases to advance their institutions from strategic planning to strategic thinking. All participating institutions relied on Mintzberg et al.'s (1998) configuration perspective rather than the positioning perspective indicated as more common in the literature. The institutional leaders interviewed all saw value in planning strategically, and noted it allowed their organizations to align priorities, perceptions, perspectives, processes, and personnel. Overall, this study revealed no specific recipe for strategic planning within these community colleges, but that successful strategic planning is contextual. It is a function of practices and models customized to fit a college’s unique setting (i.e., organization, leaders, and members).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Planning examines the importance of building a college or university academic plan alongside the institution's strategic plan. While the strategic plan outlines the various strategies the campus has chosen to make itself more financially stable and compatible with crucial external controls, the most significant offerings of a campus are its academic products-- research, teaching, service, and intellectual products. It seems apparent that both plans should be developed alongside each other, but evidence suggests that in many cases, they are developed independently. In this book the authors contend that this is a fundamental mistake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent applications of the strategic planning approach in colleges and universities and techniques necessary for its application are reviewed. In addition, the intellectual roots of strategic planning are traced, and strategic planning is defined and contrasted with long-range planning. It is suggested that strategic planning addresses the total institution and attempts to address the total environment. Five areas of the strategic planning process are identified: establishing the mission, role, and scope of the institution; analyzing data on the internal operations; analyzing data on the external environment; matching institutional mission and strengths in order to capitalize on opportunities for alternative formulations of policy; and choosing the strategies that are consistent with the institutions' values, are economically justifiable, are politically attainable, and are consistent with serving social needs. Among the most substantial modern roots of the concept of strategic planning, in chronological order of development, are the following: geopolitical theory; field theory; general system theory; transdisciplinary, management school policy studies; the concepts and technique of marketing; and the concepts of organizational effectiveness. Approaches to scanning environmental information include: tracking new ideas that appear in the higher education literature; using a cross-impact paradigm that integrates national trends, local trends, values, and institutional sectors; developing a probability-diffusion matrix for events and trends; force-field analysis; and using value profiles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last several years, extensive attention has been paid to the issues relating to strategic planning. Even though practitioners and academicians have been continuing their debates on the merits of strategic planning. The literature on planning in small business has grown considerably over the past decades. With a few notable exceptions, many scholars have recommended that small firms need to use strategic planning as an essential tool for their improved performance. According to Gibb and Scott (1985) strategic planning can almost certainly influence the growth of the company and provide a frame work for enhancing this or it can also help maintain the existing size and capability of the firm. Although, the preconceived notions of strategic planning support the idea that formal strategic planning practices heightens the owner managers' ability to think strategically (Porter, 1980; Lyles et al., 1993). Hence, the present study is initiated on incidence of strategic planning in small business. Secondary data have come from research monograms, books, and journals etc. Therefore, this study will contribute to the existing stock of knowledge in the literature of strategic planning in small business. Finally, based on the empirical findings strategic planning contributed significantly to the relationship with overall performance of small business under the study.
