Book excerpt: ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between strength and power measures with sprint freestyle performance in Division 1 collegiate swimmers. Ten male subjects with an average age of 20.1 years (SD = 2.2) and eight female subjects with an average age of 19.4 years (SD = 1.3) participated in the study. The subjects performed a maximal-effort 45.72-meter freestyle swim test, a one-repetition-maximum (1-RM) weighted pull-up test, a non-countermovement jump (NCMJ), and a barbell back squat velocity test. The data distributions were normalized by creating Z-scores for each variable measured and the sum of the three-dryland tests The data were analyzed using Pearson product-moment correlation analysis. The results showed an inverse association between the sum of the three-dryland performance Z-scores and the 45.72-meter sprint swim time (r = -0.77, p

Eight age-group swimmers completed an 8-week aquatic power training program. Eight teammates served as the control group. Pre- and post-training land vertical jump (VJ), aquatic VJ, flip turn time (5RTT), and 50 yard freestyle time (50FR) were measured to determine changes in performance. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) results indicate no difference between groups in 5RTT or 50FR (p = .360). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures indicate no significant difference between groups in either land VJ (p = .213) or aquatic VJ (p = .074). Several significant correlations indicate the importance of fast flip turns for fast swim performance and the correlation between vertical jumping ability and swimming speed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study was to determine if there was a relationship between lower-body power and swimming start performance analyzed through a correlation between the horizontal and vertical direction jump ability with the swimming start performance. Data were collected from 30 healthy adolescent swimming athletes (14.16 ± 1.47 years, 163.24 ± 7.54 cm, 50.09 ± 8.61 kg). These subjects were measured on anthropometric tests, dry-land lower-body power tests and swimming start performance tests. In the on-block phase, the results showed that lower-body power correlated with time on-block and take-off velocity. Specifically, for the vertical jump direction, CMJ and SJ were significantly correlated with time on-block (r = -.513, r2 = .263, p = .031; r = -.537, p = .025, respectively), whereas, for the horizontal jump direction, the SLJ was significantly correlated with time on-block and take-off velocity (r = -.592, r2 = .350, p = .042; r = .631, r2 = .398, p = .015, respectively). However, the lower-body power was not significantly to the reaction time or drive angle (p > .05). In the flight phase, for the horizontal jump direction, the SLJ was significantly correlated with flight distance and flight time (r = .655, r2 = .429, p = .028; r = .563, r2 = .317, p = .035, respectively), whereas no significant correlation was observed between SLJ and angle of entry. For the vertical jump direction, the CMJ and SJ were unrelated to flight distance, flight time or the angle of entry (p > .05). In the underwater-swimming phase, a significant correlation was observed between the CMJ, SJ and SLJ with time to 5 meters (r = -.597, r2 = .356, p = .018; r = .633, r2 = .400, p = .028; r = -.723, r2 = .523, p = .023, respectively). Besides, the lower-body power (CMJ, SJ and SLJ) was unrelated to time to 10 meters (p > .05).

Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to identify variables that may affect swimming energy expenditure and to develop an algorithm that allows for the quantification of energy expenditure while swimming through the use of accelerometry. A total of 50 recreational and competitive swimmers were recruited to participate in this study. Subjects completed three 400 yard freestyle swims at a "light", "moderate", and "hard" pace. Respiratory gases were collected following the completion of each swim to determine oxygen uptake. Subjects wore accelerometers on their wrist, hip and leg. An algorithm was developed via multiple regression analysis to estimate energy expended (kcal·min -1) while swimming from accelerometer counts and swim performance variables. The results indicate that a linear relationship exists between energy expenditure, swim velocity (m·sec-1) and accelerometer counts. However, the extent of this relationship is dependent upon swim velocity and the sex and skill level of the subject. The use of leg accelerometer counts in the algorithm provided the best estimate of energy expenditure regardless of swim velocity, sex, or skill of the subject. The best algorithm included body surface area, leg counts, velocity category (VC1 = 1.1 m·sec-1, VC2 = 1.1 m·sec-1 ), and sex x leg counts which yielded an R 2 value of 0.73 (SEE = 2.73). The correlation between measured and predicted energy expenditure was 0.85 with no significant difference detected between measured and predicted values. The cross validation of this algorithm indicated no significant differences between measured and predicted energy expenditure (mean error = -0.36 kcal·min-1) and a moderate (r = 0.78) correlation between these measures was noted. The amount of variance accounted for via the algorithm to estimate energy expended while swimming is comparable to land-based estimates utilizing accelerometers. However, unlike land based accelerometer studies, several factors need to be accounted for which are unique to swimming energy expenditure such as velocity of movement and the sex and skill of the subject. The use of accelerometers to estimate energy expended while swimming resulted in values which were comparable, or better than, currently available methods which utilize swim velocity to estimate energy expended.
