Throughout this research, the phrase "Niger Delta" is used interchangeably with the phrase "oil producing communities." This legal treatise examines the history of oil exploration and production in Nigeria and also explores the sources and effects of oil pollution. In addition, a cursory look at the friction among the stakeholders in the oil industry is analyzed and the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan (NOSCP) is discussed. A detailed study of the normative concepts and issues involved are achieved and the issue of corporate self-regulation as enunciated in ISO 14000 is assessed.

The assessment has been unprecedented. Over a 14-month period, the UNEP team examined more than 200 locations, surveyed 122 kilometres of pipeline rights of way, reviewed more than 5,000 medical records and engaged over 23,000 people at local community meetings. The environmental restoration of Ogoniland could prove to be the world's most wide-ranging and long term oil clean-up exercise ever undertaken if contaminated drinking water, land, creeks and important ecosystems such as mangroves are to be brought back to full, productive health. The report key findings are alarming both in terms of human health protection and environmental protection: some areas, which appear unaffected at the surface, are in reality severely contaminated underground; at least 10 Ogoni communities where drinking contaminated water; control and maintenance of oilfield infrastructure in Ogoniland has been and remains inadequate; the impact of oil on mangrove vegetation has been disastrous. The report recommends direct actions in order to address the Niger Delta contamination by oil and warns that the restoration of the area could take up years.

Investigating infant diarrhea is critical to understanding the underlying causes of infant mortality. This study is based on analysis of georeferenced oil spill data from the Nigerian Oil Spill Monitor, and spatial health data from the Nigeria National Demographic and Health Survey (DHS, 2013).

It also proffers solution to the problems, drawing on the wealth of experience gained from the oil spill preparedness and response put in place by some government agencies and operators across the globe. Based on this, the paper proposes a Quantitative risk based approach for the oil spill preparedness and response in the Niger Delta. This approach involves the quantification of risk as result of the probability of an event occurring and the impact potential of the event. Hence hazards and risks can be pre-determined and effective strategies could be developed to mitigate the impacts of potential oil spills.

As a result of the corruption happening in the country.Environmental Pollution caused by Oil prospecting and exploration in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria has impacted negatively on the biodiversity of the region. It has caused so much issues that has affected the habitation of the people who live there. This topic bothers also on the application of the resource curse theory and the sustainable development theory that deals with the reason behind resource-rich countries not developing effectively and also the reason behind innovation activities destroying the environment to the detriment of future generations.The bulk of the research work which is to be done on this project is executed using a doctrinal approach primarily facilitated by libraries and the internet as useful guides. By consequence, all the statements of legal principle and its administration is dependent of this research methodology. A significant portion of information for this research work is sourced from internet materials, journals, and articles.In recent times. 881 cases of oil spills have been recorded between January 2019 and April 2021. This spillage happened in 12 states within the country. The information stated above is obtained from a government-run satellite tracker known as the NOSDRA. It was also recorded that 77 percent of the spills majorly occurred in only 3 oil-producing states in Nigeria. The total oil spillage within this period has been equaled to about 43,000 barrels of oil of which the monetary value is worth $3 million at the international market and 1.23 billion naira in the national markets.This research work has highlighted these issues and has proffered solutions on how the problem of environmental degradation by oil multinationals can be resolved. Based on the result on the research work conducted, it was deduced that oil exploration and exploitation serviced have caused alterations in the environment. These alterations have been examined and this research work has given a rise of hope that the terrible and devastating state of the Niger Delta can be salvaged and restored to normality.Environmental Restoration can be achieved when we stop the practice of illegal dumping of il and other hazardous wastes within our environment. This also includes prosecuting employees and officials responsible for authorizing illegal dumping. Adherence to the Department of Petroleum Resources regulations for clean-ups should also be encouraged.
