Book Synopsis The Challenges of Mandating School Uniforms in the Public Schools by : Todd A. DeMitchell

This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School uniform polices, often associated with private schools, are increasingly being adopted in public schools; but not without controversy. The often asserted reasons for mandating uniforms include improved student behavior, better attendance, less competition over clothing, and improved student learning because students would not be distracted by who was wearing what and could focus on their studies. Wishful thinking or empirically tested hypotheses? However, opponents assert that a mandated uniform seeks to homogenize the students, violates their free speech rights, and does not solve the problems the policy is intended to remedy. The Challenges of Mandating School Uniforms in the Public Schools: Free Speech, Research, and Policy explores the policy rationale, the constitutional rights of students, and the research on the impact of school uniforms. Educators, parents, and policymakers will find this book and its companion, Student Dress Codes and the First Amendment: Legal Challenges and Policy Issues, a must read when considering student attire issues.

Book Synopsis Discipline by : Kirk Marshall Clayton
Download or read book Discipline written by Kirk Marshall Clayton and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writer's research was implemented from 1976-1986 & revisited from 1984-1994. The writer, as an advocate, persevered for twenty years garnering, synthesizing, extrapolating, delineating & explicating the contentious question of Dress Code Legislation for the public schools. It is the writer's belief that this research study on dress codes & how they complement the public educational system played a 'pivotal' role in the newly signed S.B. 1269 Dress Code Legislation in California on August 23, 1994. If public schools are representing a 'serious place'? Then, the time is indeed 'ripe' for educators to reassess the impact our public schools are having upon the lives of students. An excellent resource & reference book explicating Mandatory Dress Codes, Standards & School Uniforms & their positive impact upon, improving cognition, self-reliance/esteem, citizenry of tomorrow, eliminate gang colors, less money on clothes & alternatives to uniforms, based on extensive research conducted in a number of U.S. cities/possessions & part of Western Europe. The conclusions can be of great value to teachers, students, parents, principals, school districts, Boards of Education, university/college teacher training programs, & all public/private sector employers interested in developing & implementing 'practical' mandatory dress codes, standards or uniforms.

Download or read book Dress Code and Uniform Policy written by William Molnar, III and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a trend in recent years in schools enacting a strict dress code and uniform policy. Schools have argued that these policies will improve conditions in such areas as academics and discipline. In this paper, I discuss various issues relating to dress code and present many of the arguments and court cases relevant to this problem. I begin with an introduction of various dress code policies and their impact on students. I then present arguments for and against a dress code policy by citing the infamous Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District case (1969). This case began a trend that saw students fighting dress code policies. Almost every case brought to the courts by students not wanting to adhere to a dress code policy is based upon the same reason, that is, violation of their First and 14th Amendment rights. I describe in detail cases that have followed since the Tinker v. Des Moines case. I am not taking sides on this matter; rather, I am leaving the decision about the appropriateness of a dress code and uniform policy to the reader.

Book excerpt: The debate surrounding the effectiveness of school-uniform policies, as well as discussions concerning when and how to implement them, is rooted in anecdote. This review summarizes anecdotal literature on which the current debate is based and critically reviews the empirical literature, including theoretical underpinnings, findings, and suggestions. The anecdote-based literature relies on attitudes, personal experience, and hearsay, ignoring available research. Empirical literature includes small-scale studies of effects, such as case studies of schools that implemented mandatory school-uniform policies, and large-scale studies that compare nationally representative samples of students enrolled in schools implementing uniform policies with students enrolled in schools not implementing such policies on a variety of outcomes. Many methods used are flawed because different factors are not accounted for, such as design of uniform policies in different schools studies, and racial and socioeconomic status. Still, results of qualitative studies lay the groundwork for creating theories on uniform policy effectiveness and defining related issues requiring further research. These results will direct policymakers away from conjecture, emotion, anecdotes, and assumptions. One suggestion is that a uniform policy be part of a larger comprehensive plan that focuses on students' academic success. (Contains 31 endnotes, 14 references, and 18 resource Web sites.) (RT)
Book Synopsis Student Dress Codes and the First Amendment by : Richard Fossey
Download or read book Student Dress Codes and the First Amendment written by Richard Fossey and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students’ early morning decisions about what to wear to school have led many school districts into legal issues and policy challenges. Confederate belt buckles, exposed bellies, sagging pants, political statements, and social commentary have all been banned from schools, and these bans have often resulted in litigation by students who claim their constitutional right to free speech has been violated. Student Dress Codes and the First Amendment: Legal Challenges and Policy Issues explores the legal issues that arise when a school prohibits various types of student attire. Through an analysis of major Supreme and federal court cases, this volume examines conflicts that arise when administrators juggle a student’s right to free speech with the need to maintain an environment conducive to learning.
Book Synopsis Zero Tolerance Discipline Policies by : Brian Schoonover
Download or read book Zero Tolerance Discipline Policies written by Brian Schoonover and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mandatory punishments for disciplinary offenses have been included in school districts' Student Codes of Conduct since it was mandated by the Gun Free Schools Act of 1994. While zero tolerance policies were initially created to protect students and teachers from gun attacks in schools, the way in which these policies have actually been implemented in schools has prompted some parents, educators, and politicians to challenge them and call for zero tolerance policy reform. Since 1994, a majority of school districts have expanded their use of zero tolerance policies to include infractions other than those included to keep guns out of schools. Zero Tolerance Discipline Policies, the first comprehensive study of its kind, conducted by author Dr. Brian James Schoonover, examines the history of zero tolerance policies, including the practice of adding offenses other than the possession of guns to these policies. With practical, action oriented recommendations on ways policymakers and educational leaders can improve how students are disciplined, Zero Tolerance Discipline Policies offers recommendations on what should be included in a model Student Code of Conduct as well as a recommendation for starting a Three CHANCE (Changing Habits After New Character Education) system of educational placements to ensure all students are educated in a safe and appropriate facility.

Book Synopsis Student Dress Codes and Uniforms. Research Brief by : Howard Johnston
Download or read book Student Dress Codes and Uniforms. Research Brief written by Howard Johnston and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to an Education Commission of the States "Policy Report", research on the effects of dress code and school uniform policies is inconclusive and mixed. Some researchers find positive effects; others claim no effects or only perceived effects. While no state has legislatively mandated the wearing of school uniforms, 28 states and the District of Columbia have enacted laws addressing school attire. (ERIC Clearinghouse on Educational Management, Fall 2002). Recent challenges have focused on the chilling effect that dress codes have on free speech (e.g., the expression or religious or political ideas) or the burdens that new dress requirements, particularly uniforms, place on poor parents who cannot afford to bring their children into compliance. Also, some parents and legal authorities claim that when students either are sent home or placed in isolation because of dress code violations, it has a negative effect on their educational opportunity and ultimate performance.
