Partners create school to career planning and the mechanisms that allow opportunities for students to efficiently move across educational levels. In partnership NTC in Wausau, Wisconsin and area K-12 schools have awarded to high school students in the north-central region of Wisconsin, with thousands of hours of transcripted college credits. This study analyzed the impact of dual enrollment through longitudinal data. The objective of this study was to facilitate better understanding of the utilization and delivery of dual credit courses and degree completion rates at Northcenteral Technical College. Findings are summarized with regard to credits earned per student and their enrollment into post-secondary education at NTC. Addtionally, the study highlights degree completion comparison between students who received transcripted credit and those entering the college without having earned transcripted credit.

Book excerpt: Dual enrollment programs have become prominent across the U.S. Several studies show positive outcomes including increased high school completion, improved postsecondary persistence, and higher college degree completion. This study evaluated one dual enrollment program offered by a mid-sized community college in Wyoming. This research was the institution's first formal assessment of dual enrollment with respect to students' academic preparation for college, social/personal preparation for college, ability to transfer credits, and overall program satisfaction. The purpose of the research was to provide educators and policy makers with information useful for program improvement and National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) accreditation. A survey administered in July 2009 provided data for this study. Five null hypotheses were tested utilizing chi-square analysis. Findings were: (1) dual enrollment prepared students academically for the challenges of college, (2) dual enrollment enhanced students' understanding of the college student role, (3) dual enrollment did not help students make college/career path decisions, and (4) students were very satisfied with their dual enrollment experience and recommended the program to others. Number of dual enrollment credits acquired had the most significant relationship with improved academic preparation while location of dual enrollment classes (college or high school campus) had the most impact on students' social acclimation.

Book excerpt: Dual enrollment programs allow high school students to enroll in college courses before high school graduation, giving them firsthand exposure to the requirements of college-level work and allowing them to gain high school and college credit simultaneously. The role of dual enrollments in easing the transition between high school and postsecondary education was explored through a review of dual enrollment programs across the United States. Particular attention was paid to New York City's College Now program and Wisconsin's Youth Options program. College Now allows seniors from select New York City high schools to take up to six credits of college-level courses per semester at their high school. Whereas College Now focuses on academic subjects and preparing students for college-level work, Youth Options focuses on providing young people with expanded curricular choice, particularly in vocational subjects. Compared with other City University of New York freshman, College Now graduates earned more college credit than and were more likely to graduate from college on time. Youth Options was found to have had a discernible impact in providing a wide array of curricular options to high school students, particularly in rural schools. It was concluded that both delivery models have the potential to improve preparation for college. (Contains 37 references.).

Book excerpt: This study explores the associations among community college student perceptions and short-term success in college. Guiding the study are two research questions: (1) what is the association between participation in dual enrollment and subsequent college success for CTE students formerly enrolled in dual credit secondary programs and those who were not, and (2) how do CTE students' perceptions of their college experiences differ between CTE students formerly enrolled in dual credit secondary programs and those who were not enrolled in those programs? Study participants were students who were formerly enrolled in dual credit programs at the secondary school and those who were not. Previous literature indicates that students who participate in career and technical education (CTE) programs offered in high school are more motivated and successful in college CTE programs than those who were not. Dual enrollment isn't only for high-achieving students; it also can benefit first-generation students, minority students, and low-income students. This study examined associations among variables in the intervention and comparison groups. Data were gathered from an online survey and the Student Information System (SIS) at College of the Desert to examine students' experiences, perspectives, and motivation in college. These data were then analyzed using chi-square and t-test analyses. The intervention group had higher course completion rates than the comparison group, the only statistically significant difference among all associations that were tested. The intervention group had higher rates of intention to transfer to a four-year college than the comparison group but these differences were only marginally significant. Differences in low-income status and first-generation status were observed between the intervention and comparison groups but these differences also were only marginally significant.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine academic and social experiences of students who participated in a two-year intensive dual enrollment program housed on a community college campus. The academic experiences were examined through an analysis of community college and university data for 275 dually enrolled students and a comparison group of 258 traditional community college transfer students. An independent test of means was used to compare dual enrollment students to traditional community college transfer students. The findings were significant and found that dually enrolled students had higher community college GPAs, higher associate's and bachelor's degree completion rates, and shorter time periods to associate's degree completion. The social experiences were examined through the use of a survey from 93 students who participated in the intensive dual enrollment program. Repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to examine the students' experiences while participating in the dual enrollment program compared to their regular high school and compared to the university. The analysis revealed that the dually enrolled students had significantly higher ratings of overall satisfaction with the dual enrollment program and better quality ratings for relationships with students, faculty, and administration while participating in the dual enrollment program, compared to their experiences while at the high school and university. Qualitative analysis of open-ended survey questions revealed that the dually enrolled students typically missed their friends and extracurricular activities of their regular high school, but many positive aspects of the dual enrollment experience made up for "missing out" on a traditional high school experience. Initially, students opted to participate in dual enrollment in order to get a free head start on college. Many survey respondents indicated that the small size of the program was crucial to their success by providing a close-knit family environment. Recommendations are provided for policymakers to support dual enrollment programs and for high school, community college, and university advisors to provide guidance to address the unique concerns of dual enrollment students.

Book excerpt: When the United States' Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, was asked how to better prepare students for higher education he said: "We have to increase the rigor in high schools to prepare young people for the next stage of life by boosting opportunities so that they gain the support they need to meet those higher standards" (as cited in Oregon Department of Education, 2011, p. 2). One way to boost opportunities for educational growth is through participation in dual enrollment programs. There are many proposed benefits for partipation in dual enrollment programs, such as smoother transitions between high school and college, decreased time to graduation, and increased graduation rates; however, there is a lack of quantifiable supporting data for those proposed benefits (Allen, 2010; Andrews, 2004; Karp, Calcagno, Hughes, Jeong, & Bailey, 2008; Kim & Bragg, 2008). The purpose of this study was to examine students' academic performance, retention, and degree attainment at the University of the Mid-South, after their participation in the institution's high school based dual enrollment program. A group of dual enrollment students were compared to other students within their academic cohort who entered the academic institution with similar pre-entry educational attributes. The pre-entry attributes that were used to measure academic ability were: cumulative high school GPA and maximum composite ACT score. There were 6,377 student included in this study who enrolled as first-time, full-time freshmen from fall 2008 through fall 2011 semesters. Only 370 (5.8%) students included in this study had participated in the institution's high school based dual enrollment program. This study found that students who had participated in the dual enrollment program were more likely to be retained, had higher average GPAs after one academic year, and were more likely to graduate in the four years this study was conducted. However, no significant differences were found after conducting the binary logistic regression analyses on retention and graduation. Therefore, it was strongly recommended to conduct more longitudinal studies at various institutions and levels in order to further enhance the research on dual enrollment participants' subsequent academic performance in higher education.

Book excerpt: Existing research has suggested numerous advantages of dual enrollment, which allows high school students to concurrently earn high school and college credit through enrollment in a single course, including an increased likelihood of high school to college transitions and stronger postsecondary outcomes such as a reduced time to degree completion. As dual enrollment offerings have grown across the nation, research has pointed to disparities in participation by race and high school geographic location. Scholars have called for equity-minded inquiry toward policy and practice supportive of dual enrollment access. Situated within a midwestern state, my mixed methods dissertation research leveraged longitudinal administrative data, participant interviews, and document analysis to formulate meta-inferences detailing racial (in)equity in two-year college dual enrollment access. My quantitative findings revealed that disparities in dual enrollment participation exist by race, geographic location within suburban communities, and their intersection. My qualitative findings further revealed that dual enrollment practitioners laud dual enrollment as a mechanism to advance upward social mobility; yet there are inconsistent dual enrollment policies and practices across the state's dual enrollment partners which might shape differences in dual enrollment access. These policies and practices include a(n) (non)existent institutional commitment to racial equity that guides dual enrollment operations, forming articulated dual enrollment pathways as a roadmap to upward social mobility, and a (non)systematic approach to building awareness of dual enrollment among underrepresented Students of Color. These interlacing findings illuminate racial (in)equity in dual enrollment access by revealing disparities in participation and casting light on the policy and practice which molds the environment students must navigate.
