Book excerpt: Do students attending school on a year-round calendar outperform students attending school on a traditional calendar in reading and math? Mixed and inconclusive findings are reported in previous studies. This study examined the reading and math achievement of 2004-2005 fifth graders in three school-within-a-school year-round elementary schools located in the United States. An ex post facto comparison group posttest design was utilized. National percentile ranks on state selected standardized tests were analyzed. Overall, sixteen comparisons of year-round and traditional student achievement and growth were made. When mean scores were compared in reading and math achievement and growth, all four comparisons favored year-round education. Only one of these four differences, fifth grade national percentile rank, was statistically significant. When student level variables were controlled, four reading comparisons were not statistically significant. However, all four math comparisons were statistically significant when student level variables were controlled. This study found that year-round calendar students statistically outperform traditional calendar students in a school-within-a-school setting in mathematics.

Book excerpt: The quantitative, causal-comparative study posed two research questions: (1) What is the relationship between the type of academic calendar and achievement in reading and mathematics for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds? and (2) Does the type of academic calendar affect the amount of summer learning loss experienced by students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The sample was comprised of 33 year-round schools and 33 traditional calendar schools in a Southeastern state where at least 40% of the student populations were eligible for the federally supported free or reduced-cost lunch program. Archival achievement data were analyzed using an independent samples t test to determine the statistical significance of the relationship between the academic achievement of students from year-round and traditional calendar schools. The summer learning loss experienced in year-round and traditional calendar schools was measured by calculating improvement scores and compared using an independent samples t test. Study results indicated that school calendars did not significantly influence academic achievement or summer learning loss among fourth grade classes from economically disadvantaged schools in a Southeastern state. These results implied that both year-round and traditional school calendars are equally valuable in terms of academic outcomes. This work contributes to the body of knowledge on school calendar modification and the socioeconomic achievement gap. The theoretical foundation for this study was provided by the spaced learning effect because it addressed the potential of spaced learning intervals to increase the rate of students' information retention.

In this study, schools eligible for Title I funds are compared. ACT and SAT scores from twelve year-round Title I eligible high schools in California are compared with twelve traditional calendar high schools that were Title I eligible during the 2010-2011 school year. The results of this study show that although all test scores were higher from the year-round high schools, no significant difference was found between the two school calendars compared.

Chapter 3, "Academic Achievement in Year-round Schools," interprets achievement data. Compared to traditional schools, year-round schools most frequently serve lower socioeconomic communities and have twice as many limited and non-English-speaking students and a larger percentage of minority students. Many schools are not achieving at predicted levels, though single-track schools have the strongest performance. Chapter 4, "Cost Analysis," reveals that increased per-pupil costs compare with those of traditional programs. "Characteristics of the Year-round Education Program," chapter 5, discusses operations and survey results. Teachers experienced better quality instruction and preferred teaching year-round. Students had mixed feelings about school scheduling. Parents' overall satisfaction was positive. The final chapter, "Conclusions and Recommendations," indicates that year-round education is an acceptable alternative. Overcrowding is relieved, new school construction is avoided, and flexible curriculum planning and extended teacher employment are offered. Book excerpt: This study examined possible differences between a traditional and a year-round academic calendar with regard to student achievement in two suburban high schools in northern Virginia. This study’s importance derives from the fact that additional exploration is needed in order to more fully explore the potential loss of learned knowledge and diminished retention and recall of instructional material in students who experience an extended summer vacation period as part of a traditional school calendar. The purpose of this non-experimental, ex post facto, causal-comparative study was to test the theory of German psychologist, Hermann Ebbinghaus, called the spacing effect as it related to a comparison of the traditional school calendar and a year-round school calendar. While existing research has suggested that a traditional calendar results in summer learning loss, the current study did provide some support to the assumption that a summer learning loss had a long term impact on the standardized test performance of students. In order to further examine this finding, a group of test scores from 100 seniors from each high school (for a total of 200), who shared similar demographic characteristics, were used to create the data set for the study. All the seniors from these two separate but similar high schools (located less than four miles apart) were required to take the end of year (EOY) Virginia standards of learning (SOL) test near the end of their senior year of high school. The SOL must be taken and passed in the spring of the senior year in order for a senior to graduate from high school. These schools employed different school calendars. One adhered to a traditional calendar, the other a year-round calendar. The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) assessment is a timed test comprised of four comprehensive sections (math, science, reading, and social studies). This study used a non-experimental, causal-comparative (ex-post facto) research design with the independent variable being split into two non-manipulated groups (one traditional calendar and one year-round calendar), and the dependent variable being the pre-existing SOL test scores of the participants. Data were evaluated using independent-samples t-tests. Suggestions for further research which would enhance the validity of this area of research are discussed.

The researcher conducted an action research project by analyzing student test scores, behavior referrals, attendance, and teacher attitudes. The data showed year-round schools did not show a significant difference in test scores at this school. Student behavior improved on the year-round calendar; however, attendance did not show a significant difference. The results of the teacher survey indicated that teachers favored the year-round calendar over the traditional calendar.

A random sampling was taken from teachers and parents from schools in both Blount and Sevier Counties. The surveys were given to teachers who worked in a traditional school setting, teachers who worked in the year-round school setting, parents who had children attending a traditional school, and parents who had children attending a year-round school. A 3-point scale was used on the survey to measure each question. The findings from this study conclude that teachers and parents of students who attend yearround calendar schools tend to have more favorable opinions about their school setting as opposed to teachers and parents of students who attend traditional calendar schools. Parents' and teachersâ perceptions were analyzed regarding academic performance, and opinions on school calendars.
