Book excerpt: This paper concerns an analytical study of molecular mixing and finite rate chemical reactions in an infinite row of vortices representing a mixing layer. Diffusion equations for reacting and non-reacting species are solved locally in the Lagrangian frame of reference following material elements. The flowfield is a given for the problem. The concentration distributions in the vortex structure are composed from these analytical solutions and presented for several cases. The probability density functions constructed from these distributions are compared with the mixing layer experiments. For the cases studied, the comparisons indicate encouraging agreement for the reacting flow case. However, some differences are present for the non-reacting flows. Keywords: Turbulent reacting flows; Molecular mixing, Reaction in vortical structures.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 34 (thesis year 1989) a total of 13,377 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 184 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 34 reports theses submitted in 1989, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments on 2-D forcing of shear layers were completed. Analysis of data from two different forcing techniques have revealed that much of the global aspects of the scalar mixing field appear to exhibit a universal behavior in terms of the non-dimensional downstream distance x * = x Xf/ Uc where X = (U1 -U2)/(U1 +U2) and Uc = (U1 +U2)/2. This universal behavior suggests that the total amount of mixing per unit width of the layer is enhanced in regions where x*> 1.5. Work on 3-D forcing and combined 2-D/3-D forcing has lead to new findings. Results show that high amplitude 2-D forcing of a low Reynolds number wake can lead to a dramatic increase in mixing due to 3-D interaction of the vorticity field with the test section side walls. The possible application of this finding to mixing enhancement at higher Reynolds numbers is being investigated. Experiments on shear layers forced by a localized 3-D perturbation at the splitter plate along with 2-D forcing have shown that it is possible to significantly alter not only the predominant mixed-fluid composition but also the actual pdf structure (e.g. non-marching and marching behavior). Preliminary results suggest that the behavior of the span-averaged total mixing is similar to the case of purely 2-D forcing. (AN).

Book excerpt: Turbulence, mixing and the mutual interaction of turbulence and chemistry continue to remain perplexing and impregnable in the fron tiers of fluid mechanics. The past ten years have brought enormous advances in computers and computational techniques on the one hand and in measurements and data processing on the other. The impact of such capabilities has led to a revolution both in the understanding of the structure of turbulence as well as in the predictive methods for application in technology. The early ideas on turbulence being an array of complicated phenomena and having some form of reasonably strong coherent struc ture have become well substantiated in recent experimental work. We are still at the very beginning of understanding all of the aspects of such coherence and of the possibilities of incorporating such structure into the analytical models for even those cases where the thin shear layer approximation may be valid. Nevertheless a distinguished body of "eddy chasers" has come into existence. The structure of mixing layers which has been studied for some years in terms of correlations and spectral analysis is also getting better understood. Both probability concepts such as intermittency and conditional sampling as well as the concept of large scale structure and the associated strain seem to indicate possibilities of distinguishing and synthesizing 'engulfment' and molecular mixing.

Book excerpt: The present book contains papers that have been selected from contributions to the First International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows which was held from the 18th to 20th April 1977 at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, USA. Attend ees from close to 20 countries presented over 100 contributions at this meeting in which many aspects of the current activities in turbulence research were covered. Five topics received particular attention at the Symposium: Free Flows Wall Flows Recirculating Flows Developments in Reynolds Stress Closures New Directions in Modeling This is also reflected in the five chapters of this book with contributions from research workers from different countries. Each chapter covers the most valuable contributions of the conference to the particular chapter topic. Of course, there were many additional good con tributions to each subject at the meeting but the limitation imposed on the length of this volume required that a selection be made. The realization of the First International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was p- sible by the general support of: U. S. Army Research Office U. S. Navy Research Office Continuing Education Center of The Pennsylvania State University The conference organization was carried out by the organizing committee consisting of: F. Durst, Universitat Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Fed. Rep. of Germany V. W. Goldschmidt, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. , USA B. E. Launder, University of California, Davis, Calif. , USA F. W. Schmidt, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Penna.
