Of such cities, according to the table, only two, Holyoke and Lowell, have higher infant mortality rates than Man chester, and the high rate in Holyoke is perhaps due in part to the presence there of a large infant asylum which receives infants born in other cities. For the registration States,1 which in 1910 comprised per cent of the population and per cent of the land area of the United States, the infant mortality rate for 1910 was 124, as computed by the Bureau of the Census. Book excerpt: For the last sixty years, African-Americans have been 75% more likely to die during infancy as whites. From the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, however, this racial gap narrowed substantially. We argue that the elimination of widespread racial segregation in Southern hospitals during this period played a causal role in this improvement. Our analysis indicates that Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which mandated desegregation in institutions receiving federal funds, enabled 5,000 to 7,000 additional black infants to survive infancy from 1965-1975 and at least 25,000 infants from 1965-2002. We estimate that by themselves these infant mortality benefits generated a welfare gain of more than $7 billion (2005$) for 1965-1975 and more than $27 billion for 1965-2002. These findings indicate that the benefits of the 1960s Civil Rights legislation extended beyond the labor marker and were substantially larger than recognized previously. Book excerpt: "African American (AA) women in Mississippi have a higher burden of infant mortality, especially those with low income and educational levels, as compared to other regions of the country. However, it is unknown if abnormal gestation weight gain (GWG) is contributing to this increased burden. This quantitative cross-sectional study examined the association between GWG (25-35lbs), level of education, income, and infant mortality among AA women with normal prepregnancy body weight who were between 30 to 47 years old in the state of Mississippi from 2016 to 2018. Biopsychosocial and ecosocial models were used as the theoretical foundation to design the study and assess the findings. Secondary data were obtained from the Mississippi Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System and binary logistic regression analysis was used for inferential analysis. The findings revealed no statistically significant association between normal GWG (25–35 lbs) and infant mortality when compared to AA women with GWG ≥36 lbs. Income was not statistically significant in predicting GWG. In addition, education levels were not statistically significant in predicting infant mortality. Although the study results were not significant, the findings of this research will contribute to positive social change by providing knowledge to inform the following public health agencies in the state. This study encourages public health researchers to search for additional factors that contribute to abnormal GWG as a known risk factor for an increased risk of infant mortality and inform efforts to reduce infant mortality in the state of Mississippi."--Abstract.
