Book Synopsis Automorphisms of Finite Groups by : Inder Bir Singh Passi
Download or read book Automorphisms of Finite Groups written by Inder Bir Singh Passi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes developments on some well-known problems regarding the relationship between orders of finite groups and that of their automorphism groups. It is broadly divided into three parts: the first part offers an exposition of the fundamental exact sequence of Wells that relates automorphisms, derivations and cohomology of groups, along with some interesting applications of the sequence. The second part offers an account of important developments on a conjecture that a finite group has at least a prescribed number of automorphisms if the order of the group is sufficiently large. A non-abelian group of prime-power order is said to have divisibility property if its order divides that of its automorphism group. The final part of the book discusses the literature on divisibility property of groups culminating in the existence of groups without this property. Unifying various ideas developed over the years, this largely self-contained book includes results that are either proved or with complete references provided. It is aimed at researchers working in group theory, in particular, graduate students in algebra.
Book Synopsis Finite Groups Whose 2-Subgroups Are Generated by at Most 4 Elements by : Daniel Gorenstein
Download or read book Finite Groups Whose 2-Subgroups Are Generated by at Most 4 Elements written by Daniel Gorenstein and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1974 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of the memoir is to determine all finite simple (and more generally fusion-simple) groups each of whose 2-subgroups can be generated by at most 4 elements. Using a result of MacWilliams, we obtain as a corollary the classifications of all finite simple groups whose Sylow 2-subgroups do not possess an elementary abelian normal subgroups of order 8. The general introduction provides a fairly detailed outline of the over-all proof of our main classification theorem, including the methods employed. The proof itself is divided into six major parts; and the introductory section of each part gives a description of the principal results to be proved in that part.

Download or read book Applications of Finite Groups written by J. S. Lomont and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applications of Finite Groups focuses on the applications of finite groups to problems of physics, including representation theory, crystals, wave equations, and nuclear and molecular structures. The book first elaborates on matrices, groups, and representations. Topics include abstract properties, applications, matrix groups, key theorem of representation theory, properties of character tables, simply reducible groups, tensors and invariants, and representations generated by functions. The text then examines applications and subgroups and representations, as well as subduced and induced representations, fermion annihilation and creation operators, crystallographic point groups, proportionality tensors in crystals, and nonrelativistic wave equations. The publication takes a look at space group representations and energy bands, symmetric groups, and applications. Topics include molecular and nuclear structures, multiplet splitting in crystalline electric fields, construction of irreducible representations of the symmetric groups, and reality of representations. The manuscript is a dependable source of data for physicists and researchers interested in the applications of finite groups.
Book Synopsis Finite Groups by : Daniel Gorenstein
Download or read book Finite Groups written by Daniel Gorenstein and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Classification Theorem is one of the main achievements of 20th century mathematics, but its proof has not yet been completely extricated from the journal literature in which it first appeared. This is the second volume in a series devoted to the presentation of a reorganized and simplified proof of the classification of the finite simple groups. The authors present (with either proof or reference to a proof) those theorems of abstract finite group theory, which are fundamental to the analysis in later volumes in the series. This volume provides a relatively concise and readable access to the key ideas and theorems underlying the study of finite simple groups and their important subgroups. The sections on semisimple subgroups and subgroups of parabolic type give detailed treatments of these important subgroups, including some results not available until now or available only in journal literature. The signalizer section provides an extensive development of both the Bender Method and the Signalizer Functor Method, which play a central role in the proof of the Classification Theorem. This book would be a valuable companion text for a graduate group theory course."--Publisher's website

Book Synopsis A Course in Finite Group Representation Theory by : Peter Webb
Download or read book A Course in Finite Group Representation Theory written by Peter Webb and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate-level text provides a thorough grounding in the representation theory of finite groups over fields and rings. The book provides a balanced and comprehensive account of the subject, detailing the methods needed to analyze representations that arise in many areas of mathematics. Key topics include the construction and use of character tables, the role of induction and restriction, projective and simple modules for group algebras, indecomposable representations, Brauer characters, and block theory. This classroom-tested text provides motivation through a large number of worked examples, with exercises at the end of each chapter that test the reader's knowledge, provide further examples and practice, and include results not proven in the text. Prerequisites include a graduate course in abstract algebra, and familiarity with the properties of groups, rings, field extensions, and linear algebra.
Book Synopsis Finite and Locally Finite Groups by : B. Hartley
Download or read book Finite and Locally Finite Groups written by B. Hartley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Finite and Locally Finite Groups held in Istanbul, Turkey, 14-27 August 1994, at which there were about 90 participants from some 16 different countries. The ASI received generous financial support from the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. INTRODUCTION A locally finite group is a group in which every finite set of elements is contained in a finite subgroup. The study of locally finite groups began with Schur's result that a periodic linear group is, in fact, locally finite. The simple locally finite groups are of particular interest. In view of the classification of the finite simple groups and advances in representation theory, it is natural to pursue classification theorems for simple locally finite groups. This was one of the central themes of the Istanbul conference and significant progress is reported herein. The theory of simple locally finite groups intersects many areas of group theory and representation theory, so this served as a focus for several articles in the volume. Every simple locally finite group has what is known as a Kegel cover. This is a collection of pairs {(G , Ni) liE I}, where I is an index set, each group Gi is finite, i Ni
Book Synopsis Groups Acting on Graphs by : Warren Dicks
Download or read book Groups Acting on Graphs written by Warren Dicks and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-03-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989, this is an advanced text and research monograph on groups acting on low-dimensional topological spaces, and for the most part the viewpoint is algebraic. Much of the book occurs at the one-dimensional level, where the topology becomes graph theory. Two-dimensional topics include the characterization of Poincare duality groups and accessibility of almost finitely presented groups. The main three-dimensional topics are the equivariant loop and sphere theorems. The prerequisites grow as the book progresses up the dimensions. A familiarity with group theory is sufficient background for at least the first third of the book, while the later chapters occasionally state without proof and then apply various facts which require knowledge of homological algebra and algebraic topology. This book is essential reading for anyone contemplating working in the subject.
