This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 1608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This package contains all four books of An Introduction to the Old Testament set: An Introduction to the Old Testament Historical Books, An Introduction to the Old Testament Poetic Books, An Introduction to the Old Testament Prophetic Books, and An Introduction to the Old Testament Pentateuch. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Historical Books, incredible events, amazing love stories, larger-than-life personalities and deep theological implications and themes are just part of the treasure that awaits readers. These books tell the story of the nation of Israel and the God who loves her, punishes her, and always brings this recalcitrant people back to Himself. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Poetic Books, C. Hassell Bullock, a noted Old Testament scholar, delves deep into the hearts of the five poetic books, offering readers helpful details such as hermeneutical considerations for each book, theological content and themes, detailed analysis of each book, and cultural perspectives. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Prophetic Books, C. Hassell Bullock presents a clear picture of some of history's most profound spokesmen--the Old Testament prophets--and the God who shaped them. Our generational distance from the age of the prophets might seem to be a measureless chasm. Yet we dare not make the mistake of assuming that passing years have rendered irrelevant not only the Old Testament prophets, but also the God who comprehends, spans, and transcends all time. In An Introduction to the Old Testament Pentateuch, Old Testament expert Herbert Wolf provides layreaders and scholars alike with a strong undergirding of understanding and knowledge in this introduction that reveals both the seriousness and excitement of the Pentateuch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of Old Testament theology continues to be in flux as diverse approaches vie for dominance. Paul House serves as our guide—without being partisan or uninformed—exploring each Old Testament book, summarizing its content and showing its theological significance within the whole of the Old Testament canon. Readers with little prior background will find House’s thematic surveys particularly helpful for coming to grips with basic biblical content as well as for probing the theological nuances of individual parts of the canon. The book concludes by forging a set of summary statements concerning God and his character, the people of God, and links between the Old and New Testaments that suggest avenues for the exploration of a full biblical theology. Old Testament Theology offers an overview of the discipline and a fair treatment of differing views while remaining unabashedly evangelical. Readers will welcome the obvious passion of its author for the subject matter. Student friendly and useful to a wide audience, this impressive work has proved a profitable read for many.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

The Proverbs are as important as they are practical. You are likely acquainted with the Proverbs, but Irving L. Jensen will help you study the entire text. In this popular-level commentary, the well-known Dr. Jensen places the book of Proverbs in its historical setting and background and traces its development through exposition and accompanying charts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church teaches that man, as the image of God, was created for holiness. Holiness is not then reserved for the few, but rather it is the destiny of all. The message is consequently one of hope, that change is possible, that growth in holiness is possible. We do not have to continue in a downward spiral of brokenness. We are called to be liberated from sin, and God has provided us with the power to change. This power can be found in the free gift of grace given by the Holy Spirit, through His Church and her Sacraments. In essence, this book is concerned with transformational theology. It is about how the grace of God, expressed through the Sacraments, is effective and able to transform us. From the beginning, it should be explained that there are two important philosophical principles at work within the sacramental economy of the Church. The first is, operatio sequitur esse, "action follows upon being". Causes have effects, and in this case, the cause is God’s transforming love, and the effect is the change within us brought about by this love. We are changed by the Cause, and we become like the Cause. Therefore, we act in a manner consistent with our new nature. But we must be open to change. This leads to the second principle, which is, "that which is received, is received according to the mode of the receiver". There is an obstacle that can prevent the grace of God from being effective in our lives. The obstacle is our will. As the image of God, we are given freedom, the ultimate freedom, the freedom to accept or reject God. The mode of the receiver must be open to the grace of God by faith. Our will must be surrendered to His will, or we will remain unchanged. The choice is ours.
