Book excerpt: This book systematically presents the underlying mathematical structures and foundations of feature orientation in the fields of software development. New algebras are proposed and thorough investigations and discussions of their algebraic laws as well as insights on their practical applications are provided. Feature-oriented programming and feature-oriented software development have been established in computer science as a general programming paradigm that provides formalisms, methods, languages, and tools for building maintainable, customizable, and extensible software. Feature orientation has widespread applications, ranging from network protocols and data structures to software product lines.

Book excerpt: The second instance of the international summer school on Generative and Transformational Techniques in Software Engineering (GTTSE 2007) was held in Braga, Portugal, during July 2–7, 2007. This volume contains an augmented selection of the material presented at the school, including full tutorials, short tutorials, and contributions to the participants workshop. The GTTSE summer school series brings together PhD students, lecturers, technology presenters, as well as other researchers and practitioners who are interested in the generation and the transformation of programs, data, models, metamodels, documentation, and entire software systems. This concerns many areas of software engineering: software reverse and re-engineering, model-driven engineering, automated software engineering, generic language technology, to name a few. These areas di?er with regard to the speci?c sorts of metamodels (or grammars, schemas, formats etc.) that underlie the involved artifacts, and with regard to the speci?c techniques that are employed for the generation and the transformation of the artifacts. The ?rst instance of the school was held in 2005 and its proceedings appeared as volume 4143 in the LNCS series.

Book excerpt: The goal of the International Symposia on Software Composition is to advance the state of the research in component-based software development. We focus on the challenges related to component development, reuse, veri?cation and, of course, composition.Softwarecompositionisbecomingmoreandmoreimportant as innovation in software engineering shifts from the development of individual components to their reuse and recombination in novel ways. To this end, for the 2008 edition, researchers were solicited to contribute on topics related to component adaptation techniques, composition languages, calculi and type systems, as well as emerging composition techniques such as aspect-oriented programming, service-oriented architectures, and mashups. In line with previous editions of SC, contributions were sought focusing on both theory and practice, with a particular interest in e?orts relating them. This LNCS volume contains the proceedings of the 7th International S- posium on Software Composition, which was held on March 29–30, 2008, as a satellite event of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software (ETAPS), in Budapest, Hungary. We received 90 initial submissions from all over the world, out of which 70 were considered for evaluation by a Program Committee consisting of 30 - ternational experts. Among these submissions, we selected 13 long papers and 6 short papers to be included in the proceedings and presented at the conf- ence. Each paper went through a thoroughrevisionprocess and was reviewedby three to ?ve reviewers. This ensured the necessary quality for publishing these proceedings in time for the event, a ?rst in the history of the symposium.

The volume is a reflection, with gratitude and admiration, on Professor Wirsing’s life highly creative, remarkably fruitful and intellectually generous life. It also gives a snapshot of the research ideas that in many cases have been deeply influenced by Professor Wirsing’s work. The book consists of six sections. The first section contains personal remembrances and expressions of gratitude from friends of Professor Wirsing. The remaining five sections consist of groups of scientific papers written by colleagues and collaborators of Professor Wirsing, which have been grouped and ordered according to his scientific evolution. More specifically, the papers are concerned with logical and algebraic foundations; algebraic specifications, institutions and rewriting; foundations of software engineering; service oriented systems; and adaptive and autonomic systems.

Book excerpt: Features - additional services - occur whenever organisations compete by differentiating their products from those of rival organisations. Adding one feature may break another, or interfere with it in an undesired way. This phenomenon is called feature interaction. This book explores ways in which the feature interaction problem may be mitigated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a unique HCI approach to the concept of Software Product Line (SPL) and discusses the peculiarities of human-computer interaction not usually addressed in more traditional approaches. SPL is based on industrial practices for defining a range of software products. SPL design identifies commonalities and differences between the various software versions, modelling and managing the software variability. Recent research has focused on reconciling the different viewpoints of SPL and HCI, and in particular emphasizing the specific variability of HCI and the management of complex SPL models that could benefit from HCI in terms of representation, manipulation and visualization. This edited volume includes research that addresses the SPL for HCI and HCI for SPL. In putting together these two research streams, the groundwork is laid for future research into this important area. Both the HCI and the software engineering communities will find this book an invaluable resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the centre of the methodology used in this book is STEM learning variability space that includes STEM pedagogical variability, learners’ social variability, technological variability, CS content variability and interaction variability. To design smart components, firstly, the STEM learning variability space is defined for each component separately, and then model-driven approaches are applied. The theoretical basis includes feature-based modelling and model transformations at the top specification level and heterogeneous meta-programming techniques at the implementation level. Practice includes multiple case studies oriented for solving the task prototypes, taken from the real world, by educational robots. These case studies illustrate the process of gaining interdisciplinary knowledge pieces identified as S-knowledge, T-knowledge, E-knowledge, M-knowledge or integrated STEM knowledge and evaluate smart components from the pedagogical and technological perspectives based on data gathered from one real teaching setting. Smart STEM-Driven Computer Science Education: Theory, Methodology and Robot-based Practices outlines the overall capabilities of the proposed approach and also points out the drawbacks from the viewpoint of different actors, i.e. researchers, designers, teachers and learners.
