Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ssekasozi provides an ontological ethical foundation for the legal analysis on affirmative action, arguing that there is a fine ethical distinction between human rights and civil rights in practice and that, where discrimination is "categorical" in nature, a "categorical" solution is required. Chapters include a review of the literature; a summary of relevant legal documents; a detailed philosophical explication of the problem; and discussion of types of discrimination, with conclusions and directions for future research. Book Synopsis Reflections on Affirmative Action in Construction by : Paul King
Download or read book Reflections on Affirmative Action in Construction written by Paul King and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections is a collection of my writings through the years in defense of and support for Affirmative Action in the construction industry. It documents a struggle for economic justice that began on July 23, 1969 when Chicago community groups assembled to demand equal participation in local federal construction projects. As these programs became successful, resistance rose at a rapid clip. Who would have thought that our quest for economic justice would eventually reach the Supreme Court as a battle against "reverse discrimination?" Who would have believed that the "affirmative action" programs that integrated an exclusive white workforce, and provided new opportunities for Black firms would be challenged so vigorously that the term would not even be used by the 2008 presidential candidates? We share our experiences for others seeking change by providing examples of how Black businesses can address community problems, including educating elected officials and holding them accountable. It was though my membership in Parren Mitchell's (Maryland's first Black congressman-1971), Black Business Braintrust, that the first national legislation requiring mandatory Minority Business Enterprise [MBE] utilization was forged. This book emphasizes four main areas of concern: Affirmative Action as a tool to break the pattern of exclusion by construction trade unions and apprenticeship programs. To demonstrate that local organizations with dedicated leaders can combat discrimination and create positive change that reverberates nationally. To expand the Black tradesmen workforce as a vehicle for increasing Black subcontractor numbers and developing substantial Black general contractors. The development of viable black construction firms: UBM, Inc., which I co-founded in 1974, was by 2004, the largest Black general contractor in the state of Illinois. My firm accomplished everything I sought to prove as a black business by creating the capacity to apply positive solutions to problems besieging our community.

Book Synopsis Public Policy in the United States by : Rushefsky
Download or read book Public Policy in the United States written by Rushefsky and published by M.E. Sharpe. This book was released on with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This widely respected book offers a unique dualistic view of the policy process. First, it introduces readers to the American approach to public policy making as it has been shaped by our political institutions, changing circumstances, and ideology. Second, it informs readers concisely and even-handedly about U.S. policies in eight major policy realms, with well selected illustrations, case studies, and study questions. In addition to providing analytical tools and empirical information, the book imparts an appreciation of the widely shared but often competing values that must be balanced and rebalanced in the ongoing policy-making process, affecting issues of the highest concern to the American public. For this new edition, all of the policy chapters, especially those on economic policy, foreign policy, the environment, and education, have been very substantially revised and updated.

Book Synopsis Promise and Dilemma by : Eugene Y. Lowe Jr.
Download or read book Promise and Dilemma written by Eugene Y. Lowe Jr. and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Issues of diversity and affirmative action have turned elite higher education in the United States into contested terrain. Rights revolutions in the country have raised hopes that have proved difficult to fulfill. Most particularly, expectations about access and opportunity--redressing the unfairness of the past--have collided with widely held beliefs: that educational institutions should treat each person fairly as an individual and should promote high academic standards. Promise and Dilemma gathers the reflections of a group of leading educators on whether and how objectives of diversity, equity, and excellence can be simultaneously pursued. Empirical in orientation, these essays focus on constructive proposals and on the role of social and political consensus. Furthermore, they contrast what we believe we know with what empirical data and institutional experience can teach us. Eugene Lowe's substantive introduction reviews the history of the practice of affirmative action in colleges and universities. The other essays are by L. Scott Miller of The College Board; Mamphela Ramphele, vice chancellor of the University of Cape Town; Neil J. Smelser of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford; and Claude M. Steele of Stanford University. Also included are commentaries by Randall Kennedy, Harvard Law School; Richard J. Light, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; Chang-Lin Tien, the University of California, Berkeley; and Philip Uri Treisman, the University of Texas.
Book Synopsis Affirmative Action by : Richard F. Tomasson
Download or read book Affirmative Action written by Richard F. Tomasson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2001 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed at the time of its original publication as a thorough and balanced debate of one of America's most vexing political issues, Affirmative Action employs a pro and con format to provide a concise introduction to this divisive debate. In a new, substantive introduction, Richard F. Tomasson offers a short history of the affirmative action debate and addresses new developments since the book's original appearance. In Part One, authors Crosby and Herzberger draw on state and federal court decisions, federal decrees, and university practices to support affirmative action to counter racial and gender bias. In Part Two, Tomasson cites the same kinds of evidence to argue against affirmative action programs.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Affirmative Action by : Carol Lee Bacchi
Download or read book The Politics of Affirmative Action written by Carol Lee Bacchi and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1996-09-24 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book makes a major contribution to an issue of central concern to feminists. It is well written, thoroughly researched and thoughtfully argued. Wide-ranging and comprehensive in scope, the book is carefully structured, using different countries to illustrate the specific ways in which affirmative action is co-opted and contained in practice' - Jeanne Gregory, Middlesex University " This timely and incisive book brings a theoretical lens to the debates around affirmative action. It presents a comparative analysis of those countries reputed to be leading the way in policies for women - the United States, Canada, Australia, Sweden, The Netherlands and Norway. Carol Lee Bacchi draws upon current social and feminist theory to present a lucid analysis of the implementation of reform. Taking account of the particular historical context of affirmative action policies, she considers why expressed commitment to affirmative action for women has failed to translate into meaningful reform. She describes how conceptual and identity categories are given meanings and positioned in debate in ways which work to contain the effects of the reform. Bacchi concludes that proponents of affirmative action need to direct more attention to the political uses of categories than to their abstract content, and to concentrate their efforts upon exposing the effects of category politics.
