Download or read book Faith with Reason written by Paul Helm and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He argues that the reasonableness of faith depends not only on beliefs about the world but also on beliefs about oneself (for instance about what one wants, about one's hopes and fears) and on what one is willing to trust. Helm goes on to look at the relations between belief and trust, and between faith and virtue, and concludes with an exploration of one particular type of belief about oneself, the belief that one is oneself a believer. This is a book for anyone interested in the basis of religious faith."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Reason, Faith, and Revolution by : Terry Eagleton
Download or read book Reason, Faith, and Revolution written by Terry Eagleton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the one hand, Eagleton demolishes what he calls the "superstitious" view of God held by most atheists and agnostics and offers in its place a revolutionary account of the Christian Gospel. On the other hand, he launches a stinging assault on the betrayal of this revolution by institutional Christianity. There is little joy here, then, either for the anti-God brigade -- Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens in particular -- nor for many conventional believers. --Résumé de l'éditeur.
Download or read book Faith and Reason written by Brian Besong and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too smart to believe in God? The twelve philosophers in this book are too smart not to, and their finely honed reasoning skills and advanced educations are on display as they explain their reasons for believing in Christianity and entering the Roman Catholic Church. Among the twelve converts are well-known professors and writers including Peter Kreeft, Edward Feser, J. Budziszewski, Candace Vogler, and Robert Koons. Each story is unique; yet each one details the various perceptible ways God drew these lovers of wisdom to himself and to the Church. In every case, reason played a primary role. It had to, because being a Catholic philosopher is no easy task when the majority of one's colleagues thinks that religious faith is irrational. Although the reasonableness of the Catholic faith captured the attention of these philosophers and cleared a space into which the seed of supernatural faith could be planted, in each of these essays the attentive reader will find a fully human story. The contributions are not merely collections of arguments; they are stories of grace.
Book Synopsis Faith, Reason and the Existence of God by : Denys Turner
Download or read book Faith, Reason and the Existence of God written by Denys Turner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposition that the existence of God is demonstrable by rational argument is doubted by nearly all philosophical opinion today and is thought by most Christian theologians to be incompatible with Christian faith. This book argues that, on the contrary, there are reasons of faith why in principle the existence of God should be thought rationally demonstrable and that it is worthwhile revisiting the theology of Thomas Aquinas to see why this is so. The book further suggests that philosophical objections to proofs of God's existence rely upon an attenuated and impoverished conception of reason which theologians of all monotheistic traditions might wish to reject. Denys Turner proposes that on a broader and deeper conception of it, human rationality is open to the 'sacramental shape' of creation as such and in its exercise of rational proof of God it in some way participates in that sacramentality of all things.
Book Synopsis Faith Beyond Reason by : A. W. Tozer
Download or read book Faith Beyond Reason written by A. W. Tozer and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2009-11-18 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith Beyond Reason, a book by A.W. Tozer, is a compilation of sermons on the book of John. It is within this series of sermons that you will find A.W. Tozer addressing the whole truth that all things are possible with God. Tozer takes us in Faith Beyond Reason to a new understanding of our spiritual birth and human conscience and addresses our enlightened spirit, inner knowledge and the resurrection. IT is these truths that sustain us in our Christian walk. Faith Beyond Reason comes to us with insights of faith and Tozer takes an in depth look and what it stands on. In Tozer's typical fashion and style, he explores the things that are beyond or frail human understanding. Faith Beyond Reason will leave you with a new and empowering sense of the faith while subtly revealing the power of God in our lives. The question every Christian must ask as they prepare to walk with God is, do they really believe that the God they worship will move heaven and earth for them if they truly trust in Him? The whole premise of this book is that with God nothing is impossible especially when it comes to His children. We must act with faith and do what is needed.

Book Synopsis Keeping Faith in an Age of Reason by : Jason Lisle
Download or read book Keeping Faith in an Age of Reason written by Jason Lisle and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You can’t trust the Bible — it’s full of hundreds of contradictions.” Really? Just because the critic mindlessly declares it so? Don’t be so fast to believe everything you hear! In this book Dr. Jason Lisle examines 420 claims of Bible contradictions and sets the record straight. Contradiction #139 Was Abraham justified by faith or by works? Romans 4:2 - says by faith VS. James 2:21 - says by works Bifurcation fallacy. Abraham was justified both by faith and by works (James 2:24, 26). To “justify” means either to be in right moral standing or to show that one is (morally) in right standing. Abraham was justified by faith before God since God knows all things — including Abraham’s faith (James 2:23). God sees our hearts (1 Samuel 16:7), so we are justified before God by our faith alone, which God can see. But men cannot see another man’s faith. They only see the outward works that follow from inward faith. Therefore, Abraham was justified before men by the works that followed from his faith, since men cannot see faith but can see works. James explicitly teaches this (James 2:18–26).

Book Synopsis Aquinas on Faith, Reason, and Charity by : Roberto Di Ceglie
Download or read book Aquinas on Faith, Reason, and Charity written by Roberto Di Ceglie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-27 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new reading of Aquinas’s views on faith. The author argues that the theological nature of faith is crucial to Aquinas’s thought, and that it gives rise to a particular and otherwise incomprehensible relationship with reason. The first part of the book examines various modern and contemporary accounts of the relationship between faith and reason in Aquinas’s thought. The author shows that these accounts are unconvincing because they exhibit what he calls a Lockean view of faith and reason, which maintains that the relationship between faith and reason should be treated only by way of evidence. In other words, the Lockean view ignores the specific nature of the Christian faith and the equally specific way it needs to relate to reason. The second part offers a comprehensive account of Aquinas’s view of faith. It focuses on the way the divine grace and charity shape the relationship between evidence and human will. The final part of the book ties these ideas together to show how Christian faith, with its specifically theological nature, is perfectly compatible with rational debate. It also argues that employing the specificity of faith may constitute the best way to promote autonomous and successful rational investigations. Aquinas on Faith, Reason, and Charity will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working on Aquinas, philosophy of religion, Christian theology, and medieval philosophy.

Book Synopsis Dialogues between Faith and Reason by : John H. Smith
Download or read book Dialogues between Faith and Reason written by John H. Smith and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary theologian Hans Küng has asked if the "death of God," proclaimed by Nietzsche as the event of modernity, was inevitable. Did the empowering of new forms of rationality in Western culture beginning around 1500 lead necessarily to the reduction or privatization of faith? In Dialogues between Faith and Reason, John H. Smith traces a major line in the history of theology and the philosophy of religion down the "slippery slope" of secularization—from Luther and Erasmus, through Idealism, to Nietzsche, Heidegger, and contemporary theory such as that of Derrida, Habermas, Vattimo, and Asad. At the same time, Smith points to the persistence of a tradition that grew out of the Reformation and continues in the mostly Protestant philosophical reflection on whether and how faith can be justified by reason. In this accessible and vigorously argued book, Smith posits that faith and reason have long been locked in mutual engagement in which they productively challenge each other as partners in an ongoing "dialogue." Smith is struck by the fact that although in the secularized West the death of God is said to be fundamental to the modern condition, our current post-modernity is often characterized as a "postsecular" time. For Smith, this means not only that we are experiencing a broad-based "return of religion" but also, and more important for his argument, that we are now able to recognize the role of religion within the history of modernity. Emphasizing that, thanks to the logos located "in the beginning," the death of God is part of the inner logic of the Christian tradition, he argues that this same strand of reasoning also ensures that God will always "return" (often in new forms). In Smith's view, rational reflection on God has both undermined and justified faith, while faith has rejected and relied on rational argument. Neither a defense of atheism nor a call to belief, his book explores the long history of their interaction in modern religious and philosophical thought.
