Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of Pennsylvania and West New Jersey Gabriel Thomas's historical account, or geographical description of "Pensilvania and of West-New-Jersey," is a very scarce book and difficult to secure in its original edition. There are a number of copies in existence but they are jealously held in libraries and collections and are not to be had. There is a rapidly increasing demand for the book by collectors which naturally produces a corresponding scarcity. The price of the few perfect copies that have been offered for sale lately has appreciated in a remarkable degree, and the startling advance from one dollar to over one thousand dollars, which has taken place in less than one hundred years, shows, as nothing else could, the increasing interest taken in material of this kind by libraries and collectors, private or public. In the following account the sales, unless specifically stated, were held in America. Probably some of the sales recorded were re-sales of the same examples. Book Synopsis Lenape Country by : Jean R. Soderlund
Download or read book Lenape Country written by Jean R. Soderlund and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1631, when the Dutch tried to develop plantation agriculture in the Delaware Valley, the Lenape Indians destroyed the colony of Swanendael and killed its residents. The Natives and Dutch quickly negotiated peace, avoiding an extended war through diplomacy and trade. The Lenapes preserved their political sovereignty for the next fifty years as Dutch, Swedish, Finnish, and English colonists settled the Delaware Valley. The European outposts did not approach the size and strength of those in Virginia, New England, and New Netherland. Even after thousands of Quakers arrived in West New Jersey and Pennsylvania in the late 1670s and '80s, the region successfully avoided war for another seventy-five years. Lenape Country is a sweeping narrative history of the multiethnic society of the Delaware Valley in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. After Swanendael, the Natives, Swedes, and Finns avoided war by focusing on trade and forging strategic alliances in such events as the Dutch conquest, the Mercurius affair, the Long Swede conspiracy, and English attempts to seize land. Drawing on a wide range of sources, author Jean R. Soderlund demonstrates that the hallmarks of Delaware Valley society—commitment to personal freedom, religious liberty, peaceful resolution of conflict, and opposition to hierarchical government—began in the Delaware Valley not with Quaker ideals or the leadership of William Penn but with the Lenape Indians, whose culture played a key role in shaping Delaware Valley society. The first comprehensive account of the Lenape Indians and their encounters with European settlers before Pennsylvania's founding, Lenape Country places Native culture at the center of this part of North America.

Book Synopsis Words that Make New Jersey History by : Howard L. Green
Download or read book Words that Make New Jersey History written by Howard L. Green and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here isa unique collection of documents that spans the history of New Jersey, from the arrival of Dutch traders in the 1600s to the present. The materials touch on a range of subjects such as slavery and abolitionism, the labor movement, race and ethnic relations, and economic and environmental issues. The documents include letters, journals, pamphlets, petitions, artwork, and songs created not only by those who exercised power, but also by men and women of more humble station. Their lively accounts range from descriptions of Native Americans in the seventeenth century to Bruce Springsteen's lament about a declining factory town. New to this expanded edition is the text of former governor James McGreevey's "I am a Gay American" speech, as well as entries about the Abbott v. Burke court ruling mandating that New Jersey equalize funding of urban and suburban schools districts, sprawl and its effects on water supply, and the state's economic boom in the 1990s. A balanced survey of New Jersey's history in the context of a changing nation, this book is ideal for general readers who want to explore the primary sources of the state's past, and to U.S. history students at the high school and college levels.
