Book excerpt: Excerpt from Amours's Hand Book of Agriculture Many factors are back of this new interest in agriculture. In the first place, all are beginning to see that agriculture is the only vocation that can maintain an independent existence. For in it, men can find their food, clothing and shelter, and with these life can be sustained. In the second place, all are beginning to understand the importance of the soil as our universal source of supplies. We are beginning to realize that the soil can be wasted or it can be conserved in a state of permanent fertility, and that universal interest may set machinery in motion to preserve it permanently before the thinning process has gone too far. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Agriculture There has been an enlargement of the facilities for independent and original inquiry in various lines, and this important phase of modern education has been industriously fos tered. Notable additions to the equipment for such work have been made in astronomy and bacteriology, but the most important have been in the line of agricultural investigation. The equipment of the Experiment Station has been greatly increased. South Hall, which had been previously occupied' in part by the agricultural department, has been wholly as signed to it, and has been, in large part, overhauled and refitted, and now furnishes very commodious apartments for it. The laboratory facilities have been fully doubled. New apparatus and a large invoice of important foreign works have been purchased. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture of Farm Crops: A Manual of the Science of Agriculture, and a Hand-Book of Practice for American Farmers Not a farmer of that day, nor a chemist, knew that bones furnished phosphoric acid to plants; or that guano provided in its ammonia the materials from which their gluten and other nitrogenous substances were derived. Indeed the renowned father of agricultural science: Liebig - when he propounded his mineral theory, which was that the ashes of plants contained everything which they drew from the soil, and that if the mineral substances contained in the ashes, were supplied in sufficient quantity to the crops, there would be scarcely a limit to the product, excepting the space in which they were contained - knew nothing about the invaluable nitrogen which we now know to be wholly indispensable to plant growth. But light has grad ually dawned upon us, and by slow and sometimes faltering progress, there has been built up a system of agricultural science which explains the laws of plant growth and affords the most important information to the cultivator of the soil. Science is based upon fact. Philosophy is based upon speculation. Science is the outgrowth of philosophy, be cause before we can reach a true knowledge of any fact we must approach the study of it by a well devised theory, changed as may be necessary, and tested patiently and slowly until the knowledge sought is found. This know ledge, when verified by practice, sufficiently proved and classified, becomes science. Science then is nothing for the farmer to fear, or cast doubt and suspicion upon. Theory as has been said, has no part or lot in it; it is a summary of known facts, and is therefore of the most valuable use to the farmer as it gives him a sound basis upon which to build up such conclusions in regard to his practice as will enable him to meet the various difficulties which are al ways arising in his work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Agriculture IN the preparation of this elementary work upon the Principles of Agriculture, the author has been desirous of avoiding, as far as possible, the use of technical terms, in cases where other terms in general use would convey the same idea. When it has been necessary to employ such terms, they have been explained in the simplest possible manner, so as to render the book intelligible to all classes of readers. Although the work is strictly elementary, the author has considered it desirable to draw attention to certain points in practice and in theory, which seem to be insufficiently recognized by many of our practical and scientific agriculturists. A series of questions is appended to each Division, which the teacher can use or modify at his discretion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arid Agriculture: A Hand-Book for the Western Farmer and Stockman Arid agriculture is the agriculture of the arid region. An arid country is one in which there is a small amount of rainfall. The word rainfall ashere used means the total precipita tion during the year, including rain, snow, sleet, and hail. A small amount of rainfall means an amount which used to be considered insuffi cient for the raising of field crops without the artificial application of water. The line between possible farming by natural rainfall and impos sible farming with natural moisture was for merly somewhat definitely fixed. More than twenty-five inches of precipitation in a year was considered sufficient for the production of gen eral crops. In places where between twenty-five inches of rain and fifteen inches occurs farming was considered uncertain, so regions receiving this amount of moisture were classed as sub humid, or semi-arid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Corrects the many mistranslations, copyist mistakes, and errors introduced from other editions, drawing on new research and access to Agrippa’s source texts • Restores all of Agrippa’s original illustrations • Presents a nearly complete bibliography of Agrippa’s primary sources One of the most important texts in the Western magical tradition for nearly 500 years, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa’s 1533 work Three Books of Occult Philosophy collates a multitude of sources from the Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance periods and organizes them into a coherent explanation of the magical world. Divided into three parts--the natural world, the celestial world, and the divine world--the book systematically explains the philosophy, logic, and methods of magic and astrology and how they work, offering numerous examples, diagrams, techniques, and analogies. Agrippa’s seminal masterpiece provided the basis for 19th-century magical orders such as the Golden Dawn and has been a primary source for countless books on magical uses of stones, herbs, incense, and astrology. Additionally, Agrippa’s many lists and diagrams, especially the planetary seals and magic squares, have proven invaluable to magicians since the 16th century. Yet, up until now, all English editions of Agrippa’s Three Books were based on the same flawed 1651 translation from the mysterious “J.F.” In this new translation from the original 1533 Latin edition, Eric Purdue corrects the many mistranslations, copyist mistakes, and errors introduced from other editions, as well as restores all of Agrippa’s original illustrations. He notates every correction from earlier editions and offers commentary to rectify the original translator’s mistranslations. Drawing on major developments in the research of older magical and astrological texts since the 1990s, Purdue also presents a nearly complete bibliography of Agrippa’s primary sources, revealing how Agrippa was not writing from missing or secret texts but was a mainstream scholar of his day. Presenting the first new English translation of Three Books of Occult Philosophy in more than 350 years, this three-volume hardcover boxed set repairs the gaps in knowledge pervasive in the original translation as well as restores the magical spirit of Agrippa’s masterpiece, allowing us to hear Agrippa speak again.

Book excerpt: The Four Loves is a 1960 book by C. S. Lewis which explores the nature of love from a Christian and philosophical perspective through thought experiments. The book was based on a set of radio talks from 1958 which had been criticized in the U.S. at the time for their frankness about sex. C.S. Lewis examines storge or empathy love; philia, friendship love; eros, romantic love; and agape, or God love. Excerpt: "GOD is love," says St. John. When I first tried to write this book I thought that his maxim would provide me with a very plain highroad through the whole subject. I thought I should be able to say that human loves deserved to be called loves at all just in so far as they resembled that Love which is God."
