Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stan Pauley is thirty-eight years old, healthy, gainfully employed, established in the community, and seemingly content. So why is he attempting suicide? Conversely, Stan Pauley sees himself as old, unable to achieve fulfillment, fearful of the world outside his realm, and terminally miserable. Social, familial, political and cultural tenets say Stan is out of the loop with his lifestyle choices and needs to be more conforming. His steadfast resolve to live life on his own terms is incrementally being compromised by failed dreams and unrealized goals, which he interprets as an abject character failure. Based on true accounts, Stans suicide note takes you through his life beginning as a young boy not much different from any other, possessing quixotic dreams of great achievement and grand wealth. Whereas most young adults eventually realize fame and fortune are merely unattainable fantasies remanded to neighborhood barbecue banter, Stan intently refuses to relinquish that ineffable goal, lest his fathers haunting prophecy turn to frightening reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second of thirteen volumes that reprint all Sturgeon's short fiction covers his prolific output during 1940 and 1941, after which he suffered five years of writer's block. Showcasing Sturgeon's early penchant for fantasy, the first six selections include whimsical ghost stories, such as “Cargo,” in which a World War II munitions freighter is commandeered by invisible, peace-loving fairies. With the publication of his enduring science fiction classic, “Microcosmic God,” Sturgeon finally found his voice, combining literate, sharp-edged prose with fascinating speculative science while recounting the power struggle between a brilliant scientist, who creates his own miniature race of gadget makers, and his greedy banker. Every one of the stories here is entertaining today because of Sturgeon's singular gifts for clever turns of phrase and compelling narrative. As Samuel R. Delaney emphasizes in an insightful introduction, Sturgeon was the single most influential science fiction writer from the 1940s through the 1960s.

Book excerpt: This soulful play takes a raw, poetic look at the plight of onion farmers on the edge in the 1935 Oklahoma Dust Bowl. The Tidwell brothers and the Bumpinmeyer sisters explore young love, hard times and loss of family as the sky turns black and the onions die. When the sisters leave for Californee, a shocking truth hits the Tidwell farm and the boys are left with the relentless dust. Devastated, they follow the girls to the "land of milk an' honey" where, months later in a migrant camp in the grip of the Great Depression, they find the sisters buried in poverty and prostitution. The black secret of the Bumpinmeyer family is discovered. Skins are peeled in layers to reveal the sweet and the sour. Tragically, the dirt on these onion pickers never comes clean; the "land of plenty" grows nothing but the cries of dead hearts and broken Okies. Meanwhile, the devil sits in his shack, laughing. Winner of the 1999 American College Theatre Festival.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamie J. Fader documents the transition to adulthood for a particularly vulnerable population: young inner-city men of color who have, by the age of eighteen, already been imprisoned. How, she asks, do such precariously situated youth become adult men? What are the sources of change in their lives? Falling Back is based on over three years of ethnographic research with black and Latino males on the cusp of adulthood and incarcerated at a rural reform school designed to address “criminal thinking errors” among juvenile drug offenders. Fader observed these young men as they transitioned back to their urban Philadelphia neighborhoods, resuming their daily lives and struggling to adopt adult masculine roles. This in-depth ethnographic approach allowed her to portray the complexities of human decision-making as these men strove to “fall back,” or avoid reoffending, and become productive adults. Her work makes a unique contribution to sociological understandings of the transitions to adulthood, urban social inequality, prisoner reentry, and desistance from offending.
