The eternal sound of the sea on every side has a tendency to wear away the edge of human thought and perception; sharp outlines become blurred and softened like a sketch in charcoal; nothing appeals to the mind with the same dis tinotness as on the mainland, amid the rush and stir of people and things, and the excitements Of social life. This was strikingly illustrated during the late war, which, while it wrung the heart of the whole country, and stirred the blood of every man, woman, and child on the continent, left the handful of human beings upon these lonely rocks almost untouched. The echoes of woe and terror were so faint and far they seemed to lose their significance among the many - voiced waters they crossed, and reached at last the indifferent ears they sought with no more force than a spent wave. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Isles of Shoals in Summer Time Now I fully admit that you must see these in a sunny light, or else they are nothing, and worse than nothing; and I have a friend, who, because he went in a rainstorm and returned in a rainstorm, believes that there is no place on the globe more forlorn and empty of all interest than those same islands. And when I remind him that I go thither yearly, he asks, is not life hard enough, and dreary enough, any way, without adding to it by going down to the Isles of Shoals? Ah sunshine is every thing in the world outside of us, and in the world in side of us, and you want sunshine of course to make the Shoals pleasant. But given sunshine, and the place is just glorified. What do you ask better for a few days than a clean little island out at sea, with no dust, with the thermometer nailed at 70, a fine breeze every day, and that breeze, let it come from N., E., S, . Or W., laden with the ocean's cooln'ess. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Isles of Shoals: An Historical Sketch Since the original edition of this little work was published, important changes have occurred at the Shoals. Another of those summer palaces, replete with every convenience and elegance, has arisen on these barren rocks another steamer brings daily still other swarms of pleasure-seekers and invalids from all parts of the country to these salubrious islets. The Shoals have become the most frequented, and perhaps the most fashionable summer resort in New England. The circle of readers has thus been so widely enlarged, that we find ourselves called upon to issue another edition, in answer to a larger demand than we had anticipated. In this second edition, we have thought fit, in some parts, to enlarge the original text of our Monograph, wherever the new matter seemed likely to be inter esting or had the merit of novelty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from They Live on a Rock in the Sea!: The Isles of Shoals in Colonial Days It would appear appropriate, likewise, that this narrative we are about to hear and the considerable research which it entailed should be undertaken by a younger member of the Society, who, although a Philadelphian, has been privileged to know coastwise New Hampshire and its adjacent Southern Maine since he was a small boy - and to become intrigued by the colorful and often romantic background of the Isles of Shoals. He comes naturally by an interest in the Sea and its lore, because his family during four generations were colonial Shipbuilders in Pennsylvania. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kelp: A Story of the Isles of Shoals On reaching Tremont Street, they found men and boys running in the same direction. A hook and-ladder, called out by the second alarm, which was even now clanging dolefully from steeple to steeple, passed them with a jangle and clatter. Hullo! Cried Tom suddenly, catching a boy of about his own age by the sleeve. Going to the fire, Bert? - Father, this is Herbert Martin. He was in the first class with Ran, you know. Mr. Percival nodded hastily, but was too anxious for the safety of his building and its contents to pay much attention to the boy. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1873 edition. Excerpt: ...girdle of ice between the rising and falling tides (edged with black at lowwater, where the lowest-growing seaweed is exposed), making the stern bare rocks above more forbidding by their contrast with its stark whiteness, --and the whiteness of salt-water ice is ghastly. Nothing stirs abroad, except perhaps "A lonely sea-bird crosses, With one waft of wing," your view, as you gaze from some spray-incrusted window; or you behold the weatherbeaten schooners creeping along the blurred coast-line from Cape Elizabeth and the northern ports of Maine towards Cape Ann, laden with lumber or lime, and sometimes, rarely, with hay or provisions. After winter has fairly set in, the lonely dwellers at the Isles of Shoals find life quite as much as they can manage, being so entirely thrown upon their own resources that it requires all the philosophy at their disposal to answer the demand. In the village, where several families make a little community, there should be various human interests outside each separate fireside; but of their mode of life I know little. Upon three of the islands live isolated families, cut off by the "always wind-obeying deep" from each other and from the mainland, sometimes for weeks together, when the gales are fiercest, with no letters nor intercourse with any living thing. Some sullen day in December the snow begins to fall, and the last touch of desolation is laid upon the scene; there is nothing any more but white snow and dark water, hemmed in by a murky horizon; and nothing moves or sounds within its circle but the sea harshly assailing the shore, and the chill wind that sweeps across. Toward night the wind begins to rise, the snow whirls and drifts, and clings wherever it can find a resting-place; and though so much is...

Book excerpt: Celia Laighton Thaxter (1835-1894) was born in Portsmouth, NH. When she was four, her father became the lighthouse keeper on White Island in the Isles of Shoals. After resigning his post eight years later, he built a resort hotel on Appledore Island in Maine. The first of its kind on the New England coast, the hotel became a gathering place for writers and artists during the latter half of the 19th century. In her last year of life, Celia published this work, in which she lovingly describes her Appledore garden and its flowers. The flowers she grew in her cutting garden filled her own rooms and those of the hotel, and this work became famous for its descriptions of the old-fashioned flowers she grew there. Her island garden, a plot that measured 15 feet square, has been re-created and is open to visitors.
