Book excerpt: Celia Laighton Thaxter (1835-1894) was born in Portsmouth, NH. When she was four, her father became the lighthouse keeper on White Island in the Isles of Shoals. After resigning his post eight years later, he built a resort hotel on Appledore Island in Maine. The first of its kind on the New England coast, the hotel became a gathering place for writers and artists during the latter half of the 19th century. In her last year of life, Celia published this work, in which she lovingly describes her Appledore garden and its flowers. The flowers she grew in her cutting garden filled her own rooms and those of the hotel, and this work became famous for its descriptions of the old-fashioned flowers she grew there. Her island garden, a plot that measured 15 feet square, has been re-created and is open to visitors.

Book excerpt: Tommy Marshall is a blue-blooded American Prince – he grew up in Locust Valley, Long Island's Gold Coast, and has just graduated from St. Stephens, four years in New Hampshire playing hockey and lacrosse and earning grades Yale will find sufficient, given the long line of Marshall's who've preceded him and their generous contributions to the endowment. The weekend following graduation finds him in Tuxedo Park for a house party thrown by a classmate, but he arrives to an empty house – except for the girl. Mary's only sixteen, but her looks and confidence are of another age, and they drive off an hour after meeting. As the drive continues they fall deeper and deeper in love, through a moonlit night in Mantoloking, to a magical evening on Maryland's Eastern Shore, to the mystery of Charleston, and finally to Savannah, where the sojourn comes to an abrupt end. Six years and a surprise reunion later find Tommy an entitled entrepreneur whose dabbling in drugs trouble Mary, now a medical student. They fight, inviting tragedy of the worst kind, and Tommy, alone and adrift, sinks into hopeless addiction, seeking comfort and companionship in Latin America's ex-pat community. Returning to America, his downward spiral is accelerated by a huge inheritance. Recovery comes slow and hard as Tommy learns life's lessons for the first time, and with redemption comes an event so profound and stunning it can only be attributed to grace. Isle Of Shoals is an intimate look at a world gone by, a world where a person's last name determined their destiny, where money and power was a birthright, and a world new money could visit but never belong, because the harder the effort, the more difficult the realization. Above all it's a story about love, a story about a boy and a girl who knew they belonged together for all time the moment they met, only to discover that time was the one thing they couldn't have.

Book excerpt: This is the true story of a double murder that occurred in March, 1873 off the New England coast. The event was followed closely by newspapers across the country for months. It is unique because of the circumstances surrounding the crime and the controversy it raised. Reconstructed from old newspaper articles, court transcripts, the Internet and other source materials, it is as factual as I have been able to make it. Names and places are real, as is trial testimony. Where facts and dialogue were available from research and documented sources, they are accurate. Where they were scant or sustained by rumor yet necessary for the flow of the story and capture of emotions, the interpretations are mine. --author.

Book excerpt: There are relatively few places in the world where time seems to stand still. Incremental changes have occurred on the Isles of Shoals, but they remain hidden beneath the natural and historical beauty that has been their hallmark since the late 1800s. Old Shoalers such as "Uncle" Oscar Laighton and the famed poet, Celia Thaxter, would still recognize the place today, from the grandeur of the Oceanic Hotel on Star Island and the wilds of Duck Island, to the stoicism of duty-bound White Island Lighthouse. The Isles of Shoals Through Time is a visual journey to this offshore haven, a reflection of summers past and a prediction of summers yet to come. Stepping off the boat at Star, we wander past cottages and monuments. On Appledore Island we witness the rugged, natural beauty that attracted artists of all types. As we cruise through the islands as the sun sets on the Maine and New Hampshire coastlines, we are reminded why visitors return year after year to this timeless place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celia Laighton Thaxter was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on June 29th, 1835 and spent her childhood years on the Isles of Shoals, initially on White Island, where her father, Thomas Laighton, was a lighthouse keeper, and then the wonderfully named Smuttynose and Appledore Islands. At sixteen, she married Levi Thaxter, her father's business partner, and moved to the mainland, residing first in Watertown, Massachusetts, at a property his father owned. In 1854, they moved to a house in Newburyport and later, in 1856, acquired their own home near the Charles River at Newtonville. Celia had two sons, one of whom was Roland, born August 28, 1858, and would become a prominent mycologist who would later teach at Harvard. Her first published poem was written during this time on the mainland. That poem, "Land-Locked," was first published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1861 and earned her $10. It was to be the beginning of a career that would make her one of America's most popular poets and short story writers. Her marriage with Levi was not perfect, tensions gradually increased. After 10 years she moved back to the islands and her beloved Appledore Island. The marriage was not over but the separations grew longer as Levi didn't share his wife's love of island life. Celia became the hostess of her father's hotel, the Appledore House, and many New England literary and artists stayed thee; Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Henry David Thoreau, John Greenleaf Whittier, Sarah Orne Jewett, and the artists William Morris Hunt, Childe Hassam, who painted several pictures of her and watercolorist Ellen Robbins, who painted the flowers in her garden. Celia was present at the time of the infamous murders on Smuttynose Island, about which she wrote the essay, A Memorable Murder which we have included at the end of this volume of poetry. William Morris Hunt, a close family friend, trying to recover from a debilitating depression, drowned in late summer 1879, an apparent suicide, three days after finishing his last sketch. Celia bore the horror of discovering the body. That same year, the Thaxters' bought 186 acres on Seapoint Beach on Cutts Island, Kittery Point, where they built a grand Shingle Style "cottage" called Champernowne Farm. In 1880, they auctioned the Newtonville house, and in 1881, moved to their new home. In March 1888, her friend and fellow poet Whittier hoped "on that lonesome, windy coast where she can only look upon the desolate, winter-bitten pasture-land and the cold grey sea" she could be comforted by "memories of her Italian travels." Among Celia's most remembered and best loved poems are "The Burgomaster Gull," "Landlocked," "Milking," "The Great White Owl," "The Kingfisher," and "The Sandpiper." Celia Thaxter died suddenly on August 25th, 1894 on Appledore Island and is buried not far from her cottage, which later burned down in the 1914 fire that consumed The Appledore House hotel.
