CHAPTER XVIII Fur-trapping--A New Year's Godsend--The Reindeer Hunt O sooner is one hunting season over than X. another begins; or, to be more exact, there is always hunting to be done of one sort or another, and sometimes two sorts at a time. I thought that perhaps the men would be rather idle after the sledges came home for Christmas, waiting for the sea-ice to harden right out to the edge; but there is very little idleness in an Eskimo hunter's life. Sometimes I have gone into one of the huts in the daytime, and while the hunter was taking his well-earned rest between his morning tramp to the traps and his strenuous afternoon of woodchopping, I have stepped across his sleeping figure to watch his wife stretching a fox-skin upon a wooden shape, and have seen the pot of fox-flesh stewing over the stove, ready for a feast when father should wake up; and the mother has put down her scraper and wiped her hands and turned the skin with careful fingers, to show me the lovely fur of a white or red or even a silver fox, and then has gently turned it back and taken up her scraper to plod slowly and cautiously on at the work she has to do to get the skin ready for market, her eyes gleaming as she thought of the dollars and dollars that that skin meant, and of all the food and clothing and even luxuries that those dollars would buy--a new roof for the house, maybe, for it was sadly leaky in the springtime, or a new gun for the hunter, and clothes for every one of them, not to speak of a barrel of flour and a bag of ship's biscuit and a hanging lamp to burn paraffin oil! The hunter is as careful as his wife over those valuable furs--and woe betide her if he catches her making a tear or a cut in the course of her scraping! There must be no spot, ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A silent clapboard church on a barren Arctic landscape is more than just a place of worship: it is a symbol that can evoke fraught reactions to the history of Christian colonization. In the Inuit homeland of Northern Labrador, however, that church is more likely to resonate with the voices of a well-rehearsed choir accompanied by an accomplished string orchestra or spirited brass bands. The Inuit making this music are stewards of a tradition of complex sacred music introduced by Moravian missionaries in the late 1700s – a tradition that, over time, these musicians transformed into a cultural expression genuinely their own. Called Upstairs is the story of this Labrador Inuit music practice. It is not principally a story of forced adoption but of adaptation, mediation, and agency, exploring the transformation of a colonial artifact into an expression of Inuit aesthetic preference, spirituality, and community identity. Often overlaying the Moravian traditions with defining characteristics drawn from pre-contact expressive culture, Inuit musicians imbued this once-alien music with their own voices. Told through archival documents, oral histories of Inuit musicians, and the music itself, Called Upstairs tracks the emergence of this Labrador Moravian music tradition across two and a half centuries. Tom Gordon presents a chronicle of Inuit leadership and agency in the face of colonialism through a unique lens. In this time of reconciliation, this story offers a window into Inuit resilience and the power of a culture’s creative expressions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection follows anthropological perspectives on peoples (Canadian Inuit, Norwegian Sámi, Yupiit from Alaska, and Inuit from Greenland), places, and practices in the Circumpolar North from colonial times to our post-modern era. This volume brings together fresh perspectives on theoretical concepts, colonial/imperial descriptions, collaborative work of non-Indigenous and Indigenous researchers, as well as articles written by representatives of Indigenous cultures from an inside perspective. The scope of the book ranges from contributions based on unpublished primary sources, missionary journals, and fairly unknown early Indigenous sources and publications, to those based on more recent Indigenous testimonies and anthropological fieldwork, museum exhibitions, and (self)representations in the fields of fashion, marketing, and the arts. The aim of this volume is to explore the making of representations for and/or by Circumpolar North peoples. The authors follow what representations have been created in the past and in some cases continue to be created in the present, and the Indigenous employment of representations that has continuity with the past and also goes beyond "traditional" utilization. By studying these representations, we gain a better understanding of the dynamics of a society and its interaction with other cultures, notably in the context of the dominant culture’s efforts to assimilate Indigenous people and erase their story. People’s ideas about themselves and of "the Other" are never static, not even if they share the same cultural background. This is even more the case in the contact zone of the intercultural arena. Images of "the Other" vary according to time and place, and perceptions of "others" are continuously readjusted from both sides in intercultural encounters. This volume has been prepared by the Research Group Circumpolar Cultures (RGCC) which is based in the Netherlands. Its members conduct research on social and cultural change focusing on topics that are of interest to the Indigenous peoples of the Arctic. The RGCC builds on a long tradition in Arctic studies in the Netherlands (Nico Tinbergen, Geert van den Steenhoven, Gerti Nooter, and Jarich Oosten) and can rely on rich Arctic collections of artefacts and photographs in anthropological museums and extensive library collections. The expertise of the RGCC in Arctic studies is internationally acknowledged by academics as well as circumpolar peoples.
