This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on Ammonification in Soils by Pure Cultures No attempt was made to run all the series with the different forms or organic matter at the same time, because only the relative powers of the different organisms to produce ammonia were sought. For the same reason amounts of organic matter were chosen in the different series which would least affect the physical conditions obtaining in the cultures rather than amounts employed which would make the total amount of nitrogen added the same in all series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Humus in Hawaiian Soils The soils used in this investigation represent a wide range in composition and properties. The humus, as will be shown varies from per cent to per cent and the mechanical analyses show a varied physical structure. Since the chief difficulty in humus determinations is associated with the clay, the mechanical composition of the soil used is of some interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Effect of Heat on Hawaiian Soils While the Old system of burning the soil has gradually fallen out Of use, the closely related partial sterilization by means Of heat and vola tile antiseptics is of great interest at the present time. In greenhouse work steam sterilization finds extensive application and has been the subject of interesting investigations during the past few years. Likewise the action of dry heat in its relation to partial sterilization and in comparison with the effects Of volatile antiseptics on subse quent biological activities has received considerable study. The Old idea of considering the subject in a restricted physical and limited chemical sense is, therefore, giving way to a broader view of the question. The more specific chemical effects involved, including cer tain physico-chemical effects dealt with more In detail in this paper, and the biological results are now being studied. Book Synopsis Composition of Hawaiian Soil Particles (Classic Reprint) by : Wm T. McGeorge
Download or read book Composition of Hawaiian Soil Particles (Classic Reprint) written by Wm T. McGeorge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition of Hawaiian Soil Particles One of the primary characteristics of Hawaiian soils is the wide diversity of types which makes difficult their classification according to the usual methods employed in soil surveys. A wide variation in chemical composition, as well as in physical properties, is found within very Short distances. During a recent investigation in this laboratory upon the determination of humus, the character of the clay in Hawaiian soils, as regards certain of its properties, was found to be radically different from that in mainland soils. Chief among these abnormal properties is the incomplete coagulation when coag ulants are added. This is especially true in case of addition of ammonium carbonate, which has been successfully used on mainland soils for the coagulation of clay in humus extracts. This peculiarity of the clay has led to a study of the composition of the coagulable and noncoagulable grains and a further investiga tion upon the composition of the clay, fine silt, silt, fine sand, and coarse sand separates in the important Hawaiian types of soil differ ing in color, chemical composition, and physical properties.
