Book excerpt: In this book, editors Jarvis, Baker, and McClurg have selected 25 of the funniest law review articles from the past 50 years and arranged them in five categories: law students, law professors, lawyers, judges, and legal scholarship. Also included is a comprehensive bibliography, which is an invaluable research tool. The book's jacket features an original cartoon by the noted artist Alan Gerson. "The compilers . . . have put together a book full of witty articles that make good-natured fun of the legal world. . . . At a mere $25, it is an economical choice for a quality addition to any library's humor collection." -- The Law Library Journal "This book would be a nice addition to a law library in order to show a face of legal scholarship not frequently represented in library collections. Moreover, it would make a nice gift for oneself, a colleague, or a friend studying in law school for those moments when a dose of humor might lessen the pressures of attending to more serious legal matters." -- New York Law Journal "[Y]ou will doubtless enjoy taking a break from your labors by perusing this collection of 25 amusing law review articles." -- The Law Teacher "Definitely a good read." -- The National Jurist "A very funny romp through legal life." -- The National Law Journal "[S]plendid examples of the seriously underdeveloped genre of law review humor writing." -- Legal Times "A collect[ion] of rare gems." -- The Green Bag "This book will make a good addition to law school collections, and a very nice gift for the lawyers in our lives who need a good laugh or humor lessons." -- Bimonthly Review of Law Books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space was the last frontier for the human race, one that they conquered with their usual unrelenting enthusiasm. But did they really? The crew of the United Space Coalition vessel Avenger is about to have that question answered. While the Avenger is out on a routine vacation tour, taking residents of Earth to the fabled Marson prison which had been abandoned fifty years prior, they come across an unidentifiable ship floating in space, having been attacked by a savage race of alien beings. Despite being warned off countless times the Avenger's Captain insists on dispatching a small team among which is one Ensign Connie Barker, an archeologist and historian. The rescue team finds only three people out of the entire crew survived, taking the mysterious survivors back to the USC Avenger, back to safety. Janus, one of the survivors whose odd silver tracings which snake all over her skin, belongs to an alien race that the humans have never before come across or even heard of. She keeps her own past and origins shrouded in mystery and darkness, though with the display of her own strange powers, it becomes obvious that Janus is a truly powerful but largely unknown element. As the Avenger crew comes under attack by the very beings they had rescued Janus from, the Avenger is catapulted across the universe and into a galactic war that the humans are totally unprepared for. What awaits is dangerous and deadly and will test the very core of their determination to survive. As the future of the universe is decided on a small, remote planet, Janus is reunited with people of her own species and the future remains full of question marks. More than the outcome of the war weighs on the minds of all thoseinvolved. Would the Avenger ever get home? Would they even survive to try and return to Earth? Among a backdrop of war and death they would do more than simply fight for their lives. Personal revelations, even historical revelations, ensue as everyone inevitably forms relationships, friendships destined to last. And perhaps more. Perhaps love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most exciting and innovative legal scholarship has been driven by historical curiosity. Legal history today comes in a fascinating array of shapes and sizes, from microhistory to global intellectual history. Legal history has expanded beyond traditional parochial boundaries to become increasingly international and comparative in scope and orientation. Drawing on scholarship from around the world, and representing a variety of methodological approaches, areas of expertise, and research agendas, this timely compendium takes stock of legal history and methodology and reflects on the various modes of the historical analysis of law, past, present, and future. Part I explores the relationship between legal history and other disciplinary perspectives including economic, philosophical, comparative, literary, and rhetorical analysis of law. Part II considers various approaches to legal history, including legal history as doctrinal, intellectual, or social history. Part III focuses on the interrelation between legal history and jurisprudence by investigating the role and conception of historical inquiry in various models, schools, and movements of legal thought. Part IV traces the place and pursuit of historical analysis in various legal systems and traditions across time, cultures, and space. Finally, Part V narrows the Handbooks focus to explore several examples of legal history in action, including its use in various legal doctrinal contexts.

Tales from the Haunted Mansion is a fun, spooky ride, just like the attraction from the Disney Parks. And if readers are familiar with the ride, they'll see elements of it throughout the entire story, from items straight of the Mansion (are those pictures stretching?) to lyrics from the narration that is heard in each Doom Buggy. In this bone-chilling book, you will hear the terrifying tales of the Fearsome Foursome--four kids who look to out-scare each other. But just wait until they hear my spooky stories. Who am I? I am Amicus Arcane, your librarian and host. Your Ghost Host. So read on... if you dare!

Book excerpt: Since 2013, an organization called the Nonhuman Rights Project has brought before the New York State courts an unusual request—asking for habeas corpus hearings to determine whether Kiko and Tommy, two captive chimpanzees, should be considered legal persons with the fundamental right to bodily liberty. While the courts have agreed that chimpanzees share emotional, behavioural, and cognitive similarities with humans, they have denied that chimpanzees are persons on superficial and sometimes conflicting grounds. Consequently, Kiko and Tommy remain confined as legal "things" with no rights. The major moral and legal question remains unanswered: are chimpanzees mere "things", as the law currently sees them, or can they be "persons" possessing fundamental rights? In Chimpanzee Rights: The Philosophers’ Brief, a group of renowned philosophers considers these questions. Carefully and clearly, they examine the four lines of reasoning the courts have used to deny chimpanzee personhood: species, contract, community, and capacities. None of these, they argue, merits disqualifying chimpanzees from personhood. The authors conclude that when judges face the choice between seeing Kiko and Tommy as things and seeing them as persons—the only options under current law—they should conclude that Kiko and Tommy are persons who should therefore be protected from unlawful confinement "in keeping with the best philosophical standards of rational judgment and ethical standards of justice." Chimpanzee Rights: The Philosophers’ Brief—an extended version of the amicus brief submitted to the New York Court of Appeals in Kiko’s and Tommy’s cases—goes to the heart of fundamental issues concerning animal rights, personhood, and the question of human and nonhuman nature. It is essential reading for anyone interested in these issues.
