Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satan’s Playground chronicles the rise and fall of the tumultuous and lucrative gambling industry that developed just south of the U.S.-Mexico border in the early twentieth century. As prohibitions against liquor, horse racing, gambling, and prostitution swept the United States, the vice industry flourished in and around Tijuana, to the extent that reformers came to call the town “Satan’s Playground,” unintentionally increasing its licentious allure. The area was dominated by Agua Caliente, a large, elegant gaming resort opened by four entrepreneurial Border Barons (three Americans and one Mexican) in 1928. Diplomats, royalty, film stars, sports celebrities, politicians, patricians, and nouveau-riche capitalists flocked to Agua Caliente’s luxurious complex of casinos, hotels, cabarets, and sports extravaganzas, and to its world-renowned thoroughbred racetrack. Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, Louis B. Mayer, the Marx Brothers, Bing Crosby, Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, and the boxer Jack Dempsey were among the regular visitors. So were mobsters such as Bugsy Siegel, who later cited Agua Caliente as his inspiration for building the first such resort on what became the Las Vegas Strip. Less than a year after Agua Caliente opened, gangsters held up its money-car in transit to a bank in San Diego, killing the courier and a guard and stealing the company money pouch. Paul J. Vanderwood weaves the story of this heist gone wrong, the search for the killers, and their sensational trial into the overall history of the often-chaotic development of Agua Caliente, Tijuana, and Southern California. Drawing on newspaper accounts, police files, court records, personal memoirs, oral histories, and “true detective” magazines, he presents a fascinating portrait of vice and society in the Jazz Age, and he makes a significant contribution to the history of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Book excerpt: Nestled along the New Jersey coastline and built to be one of the original seaside tourist destinations, Ocean City still sets the standard for resort living along the mid-Atlantic. What was once a whale-processing center in the 1700s emerged as a destination for sun and fun by drawing the biggest names and the classic American families of the early twentieth century. As our country's search for the ideal vacation grew, this 7-mile stretch of beach cultivated a rich history and a reputation as one of the most alluring communities on the East Coast.

Book excerpt: * This book is the first title to reveal the interior spaces as well as other buildings on the grounds of the famous Greenbrier Hotel* Never-seen-before sketches and vintage color photographs from Dorothy Draper's archive of the redesign of the hotel, with behind the scenes anecdotes from international designer Carleton Varney, who has made his own mark on the hotel, and new photography by Michel ArnaudIn 1946 (after a stint as a World War II military hospital), quintessential American decorator Dorothy Draper was brought in to restore the Greenbrier hotel. She created a signature look - described at the time as 'Romance and Rhododendrons' - that has influenced and delighted not only designers and decorators but also travelers, weary of the gray and beige color schemes that permeate most hospitality properties even now. Draper transformed the interiors with bold colors, classical influences and modern touches. When Carleton Varney arrived in Mrs. Draper's office in 1961 to work as an assistant in the design department, one of his first tasks was to accompany the design icon by train to one of her most well-known and publicised projects. Since that time, he has been involved with every aspect of the hotel's design, maintaining and continuing the look that Draper designed, as well as modernizing, upgrading and putting his own stamp on it. Working with his experienced and innovative team, Varney has turned the historic hotel into a resort for the 21st century.

The full-color illustrated guide to Palm Beach, published by Pineapple Press, an imprint of Rowman & Littlefield, is a rich and beautifully curated collection of destinations, must-sees, and restaurant and shopping recommendations in what has become known as “American’s First Resort Destination.” Leading 2,000 visitors a year on public and private tours of Worth Avenue and Palm Beach Island and hosting thousands of guests a year at his boutique inn and vacation homes, Rose was inspired to write a local guide to help visitors make the most of their visit to Palm Beach. The first edition was released in 2017 and quickly became the most widely distributed curated guide to The Palm Beaches. The completely revised and updated 2nd edition of Palm Beach: The Essential Guide to America’s Legendary Resort Town features a foreword from celebrated designer and author Steven Stolman, as well as new content, such as a scenic walking tour, information about private clubs, birding tips and new local attractions. The book offers insights on island-appropriate attire, tips on self-guided tours, recommended regional road trips, horse show 101, and so much more, providing a complete overview of everything Palm Beach. The guide is the ultimate resource for those who know the city intimately, wish to visit, or just have an appreciation for the cultural destination that is Palm Beach. Throughout the community, Rose’s expertise is wildly hailed. “This guide highlights all of those special places in Palm Beach for visitors and residents alike”, said Danielle Hickox Moore, Mayor of Palm Beach. “Rick Rose’s Palm Beach – The Essential Guide has become truly essential for anyone visiting or relocating to the Palm Beaches.
