Book Synopsis Americanism Versus Bolshevism by : Ole Hanson
Download or read book Americanism Versus Bolshevism written by Ole Hanson and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1920 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ole Hanson served as Seattle's mayor at a pivotal time: communists infiltrated the city's labour unions, and within months staged a general strike and revolution - this is Hanson's personal account of defeating the uprising. Buoyed by the success of the 1917 Revolution in Russia, ambitious communists hoped that a revolutionary chain reaction would ensue across the world, including in the United States. The prosperous port city of Seattle, with its sizable dock and industry, became a flashpoint in the movement. The city's labour unions were infiltrated and radicalized by communists, who hatched a plot to overthrow the local government through crippling strike action. The attempt was only thwarted by city hall's total refusal to grant any concession, backed by thousands of American soldiers. The author goes on to discuss the history of communist movements, and how they arose in countries with mass poverty coupled with abysmal government. He constructively suggests many measures that the US can take to guard against future actions by communists; for example the control of rising living costs and the dollar's inflation, sustained investment in education and increases to teachers' pay, plus fighting corruption in certain industries.

Book Synopsis Reds at the Blackboard by : Clarence Taylor
Download or read book Reds at the Blackboard written by Clarence Taylor and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York City Teachers Union shares a deep history with the American left, having participated in some of its most explosive battles. Established in 1916, the union maintained an early, unofficial partnership with the American Communist Party, winning key union positions and advocating a number of Party goals. Clarence Taylor recounts this pivotal relationship and the backlash it created, as the union threw its support behind controversial policies and rights movements. Taylor's research reaffirms the party's close ties with the union—yet it also makes clear that the organization was anything but a puppet of Communist power. Reds at the Blackboard showcases the rise of a unique type of unionism that would later dominate the organizational efforts behind civil rights, academic freedom, and the empowerment of blacks and Latinos. Through its affiliation with the Communist Party, the union pioneered what would later become social movement unionism, solidifying ties with labor groups, black and Latino parents, and civil rights organizations to acquire greater school and community resources. It also militantly fought to improve working conditions for teachers while championing broader social concerns. For the first time, Taylor reveals the union's early growth and the somewhat illegal attempts by the Board of Education to eradicate the group. He describes how the infamous Red Squad and other undercover agents worked with the board to bring down the union and how the union and its opponents wrestled with charges of anti-Semitism.

Download or read book Americanism Versus Bolshevism written by Ole Hanson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americanism Versus Bolshevism I undertook the writing of this book for the purpose of placing before the people of my country the truth in relation to bolshevism and its American manifestation, I. W. W.'ism; as well as stating in plain language just what the concept of Americanism means to me. I am tired of reading rhetorical, finely spun, hypocritical, far-fetched excuses for bolshevism, communism, syndicalism, I. W. W.'ism! Nauseated by the sickly sentimentality of those who would conciliate, pander, and encourage all who would destroy our Government, I have tried to learn the truth and tell it in United States English of one or two syllables. Every statement made, every principle enunciated, every record quoted, almost without exception, is taken from the records of the syndicalistic and bolshevistic organizations; from the columns of their magazines and propaganda newspapers; from their text books; from the lips of their leaders and from other authoritative sources, agreed upon and repeatedly quoted by their propagandists.
