Book Synopsis Americanism:The Fourth Great Western Religion by : David Gelernter
Download or read book Americanism:The Fourth Great Western Religion written by David Gelernter and published by Doubleday. This book was released on 2007-06-19 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to “believe” in America? Why do we always speak of our country as having a mission or purpose that is higher than other nations? Modern liberals have invested a great deal in the notion that America was founded as a secular state, with religion relegated to the private sphere. David Gelernter argues that America is not secular at all, but a powerful religious idea—indeed, a religion in its own right. Gelernter argues that what we have come to call “Americanism” is in fact a secular version of Zionism. Not the Zionism of the ancient Hebrews, but that of the Puritan founders who saw themselves as the new children of Israel, creating a new Jerusalem in a new world. Their faith-based ideals of liberty, equality, and democratic governance had a greater influence on the nation’s founders than the Enlightenment. Gelernter traces the development of the American religion from its roots in the Puritan Zionism of seventeenth-century New England to the idealistic fighting faith it has become, a militant creed dedicated to spreading freedom around the world. The central figures in this process were Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson, who presided over the secularization of the American Zionist idea into the form we now know as Americanism. If America is a religion, it is a religion without a god, and it is a global religion. People who believe in America live all over the world. Its adherents have included oppressed and freedom-loving peoples everywhere—from the patriots of the Greek and Hungarian revolutions to the martyred Chinese dissidents of Tiananmen Square. Gelernter also shows that anti-Americanism, particularly the virulent kind that is found today in Europe, is a reaction against this religious conception of America on the part of those who adhere to a rival religion of pacifism and appeasement. A startlingly original argument about the religious meaning of America and why it is loved—and hated—with so much passion at home and abroad.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Character of American Revivals of Religion The publication of this little volume may perhaps demand an apology. And it is hoped by the Author, that it may seem as reasonable, as it is simple. Soon after his arrival in London, he received a note from an esteemed and reverend brother, re questing him to deliver a discourse in his chapel on American Revivals. The Author answered the note, that he would take the request under consideration. The demand was altogether unanticipated, the topic delicate, and difficult of treatment before a popular assembly, -but yet interesting, and so far as the Author could learn, im portant in the eyes of British Christians; as the religious public in England were yet in suspense, as to the opinion proper to be entertained on the subject, on account. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Education of an American Citizen The purpose of this series of loosely con nected chapters is to call attention to some of the influences which direct, and some of the qualities which mark, the religious education of an American citizen. The normal life of an American proceeds from childhood to youth and from youth to manhood, through the shift ing environments of home, school, college, busi ness, citizenship and Church; and at each step he is met by conditions and demands which may either promote or obstruct his religious educa tion. What, then, are the circumstances which are likely to be most favorable for a healthy minded and progressive religious experience? What can be done by parents, teachers, em ployers, statesmen, or pastors, to reinforce American citizenship with a rational religious life? What are the special obstacles which American civilization offers to religious prog ress? What are the traits of the American character on which teachers of religion may most confidently depend? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americanism Versus Christianity Much has been said recently about open discussion and open treaties. Secret diplomacy and secret treaties were denounced and a large hope has been fostered for a candid declaration of world confidence. This was in the political field of human interests, but the political diplomats availed themselves of the most guarded seclusion in all matters of great importance. The hope and promise did not materialize. In the same way do we hear a great deal about the new aims of the church. "Service" is the great slogan in the open. Sermons, prayer and sacraments are not very essential. Saving the individual soul from the "wrath of God" is not popular in the open, and of the saints in glory we hear only in hymn and funeral oration. Salvation Army "doughnuts" are the gods of today and from all indications Y. M. C. A. preachments are taboo. However, when the Convent and Sundayschool are investigated, "doughnuts" are still regarded as dangerous to the "soul." Among the diplomats of the creeds, the world is still the work of six days and the serpent is still endowed with the cunning of human language. Death is punishment and blood a remedy for vice. Perhaps the best criterion of the present aim and content of Christian instruction may be gleaned from the contemporary "practical lessons" of the Sundayschool quarterlies. There are twelve selected Lessons, and here follows the Sundayschool sentiment as expressed by the diplomats of the creeds: - First lesson: "God demands our undivided service." Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Christianity The heroic discovery of America, at the close of the fifteenth century after Christ, has compelled the generous and just admiration of the world; but the grandeur of human enterprise and achievement in the discovery of the western hemisphere has a less claim on our admiration than that divine Wisdom and controlling providence which, for reasons now manifested, kept the secret hidden through so many millenniums, in spite of continual chances of dis closure, until the fullness of time. Download or read book American Religion (Classic Reprint) written by John Weiss and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Religion Some mental method must exist to control all the applications of Thought in morals and religion. Of course it is trite to say there must be method everywhere. The Oneida Community ran to waste year after year for want of method in its trade and farming, till a French Canadian came there with a mouse-trap of his invention, and caught prosperity. No trap had ever before so nicely corresponded to the cunning of surplus mice. Method is simply an adaptation to the facts. The sculptor discovers what form of tool will hollow a knee-joint, and he saves time for the face. Philosophers and theologians grow stiff in that joint because they refuse to walk in Nature's way. But the great discoveries of Newton and Kepler had nothing mysterious: they were the gestures of men without preconceptions to methodize, whose ways were so near to Nature that they kept the rare brains susceptible to organic laws; so that their genius was their health. Method rules the distinction between the literary man and the Bohemian, the scholar and the charlatan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and the Public School: An American Problem At the meeting of the Inter-Church Conference in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November, 1905, at which twenty-nine Protestant Churches of America were represented, one of the papers treated the question of Weekday Religious Instruction. Its main proposition was favorably received, and the following resolution was adopted by the Conference: Resolved, That in the need of more systematic education in religion, we recommend for the favorable consideration of the Public School authorities of the country the proposal to allow the children to absent themselves without detriment from the public schools on Wednesday or on some other afternoon of the school week for the purpose of attending religious instruction in their own churches; and we urge upon the churches the advisability of availing themselves of the opportunity so granted to give such instruction in addition to that given on Sunday. The further consideration of the subject was referred to the Executive Committee. By direction of this Committee a report on Week-day Instruction in Religion was presented at the First Meeting of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, held in Philadelphia in 1908.
