Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Telephone Practice That a third edition of this work should have been called for within three months after the appearance of the first is indeed gratifying. The time since the second edition was exhausted has been utilized in making many changes in the matter already presented, and in the preparation of much new matter, all of which it is thought will make the work more valuable as a guide and general reference-book in practical telephony. The chapter on Automatic Exchanges has been written because the book seemed incomplete without it. If it is here. After criticised for containing no descriptions of practical appa ratus, my plea will be that it is mainly the fault of the subject. That very important factor in modern telephony, the storage battery, was certainly very inadequately handled in the first edi tion. Chapter XXXV. Is intended to remedy this. The last chapter, on Specifications, is given as a help rather than as an inflexible guide to those drawing specifications. The specifications given represent modern practice, but they are not meant to serve in the place of common sense or of engineering ability. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Telephone Hand-Book This little book has no pretension to be considered a complete treatise on telephony as it exists in America. The time for such a work is not yet come. But it is felt that there is a demand for a practical book on telephone working and management, and The Telephone Hand-Book is an attempt at meeting that demand. With the exception of a few chapters dealing with certain forms of transmitters and receivers used in Europe, which are given for the information of those who are unfamiliar with other types of instruments than those used in this country, the book is based entirely on standard American practice; and most of the material, apparatus and methods described are peculiar to or have originated in this country. With the illustrations no time nor trouble has been spared to make them clear and intelligible, and of real service to the reader. The great majority of them have been executed especially for the book; quite a number have never been published before, others have appeared in the Electrical Engineer and Electrical Review, generally in connection with my own articles. These latter have been re-drawn from the original material wherever possible. As this is the first practical book on American telephone methods, sins of commission and omission will no doubt be met with in its pages. Any suggestions or corrections, which may be addressed to the care of the publishers, will be received in a spirit of due modesty and thankfulness. Book excerpt: ViolinMind is a pedagogical method book that focuses on intonation. It is a transcription for the violin of CelloMind published in 2017 by Ovation Press, Ltd. The co-authors of ViolinMind are Hans Jørgen Jensen, Professor of Cello at the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University and Grigory Kalinovsky, Professor of Music (Violin) at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. The mystery of intonation is dissected by defining the scientific principles behind it, and providing easy, intuitive examples of the three main kinds of intonation systems used today: Equal Temperament, Just, and Pythagorean. Playing with exquisite intonation has mostly been reserved for those who possess a strong intuitive sense of pitch and harmonic color; however, ViolinMind breaks down this barrier using a highly detailed, systematic approach, making the process of acquiring a sophisticated sense of intonation similar to any other technical skill. Chapters in the book explore in great detail topics such as the harmonic overtone series, the scientific principles behind Cents, the syntonic comma, the just scales, the Pythagorean comma, the Pythagorean semitones, advanced sympathetic vibrations, Tartini tones, and double stops studies in tritones. All chapters in the book include numerous practical samples and listening exercises that bridge the gap between the theory and its application. The chapters on intonation conclude with practical examples from the following repertoire: intonation performance practice in the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo (BWV 1001-1006), and intonation performance practice with piano. The appendices in the book provide detailed explanations about the Helmholtz intonation chart, the harmonic series, just intonation, the Schisma, as well as an illustration of two violin fingerboards from two method books from the 18th century showing pitch distribution for just intonation and Pythagorean intonation respectively.
