Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Revolution: Including Also the Beauties of American History Tm: following Anecdotes were principally selected by a youth of twelve years of age. Having had constant ao cess to a library well supplied with books on History and Biography, he early acquired a taste for reading such works; and the present small volume is one of the results of such an attention to this species of literature. The selection was made at intervals between hours of devotion to elementary and classical study and may hence be viewed as having been rather an amusement, than a l-abo1 of painful toil and research. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Revolution: With a Preliminary View of the Character and Principles of the Colonists, and Their Controversies With Great Britain Tan first intention of the writer of this book was to prepare an abstract of some one of the larger histories of the American Revolution, in a more compact form than any which he had met with in his own reading. The object was to present a convenient volume, which should embrace all the principal occurrences, civil, military, and political, in America and Europe, having a direct influence on the principles and progress of the revolutionary contest, ' at the same time that it should avoid all minor details not positively necessary to the continuity or integrity of the narrative. The military events were to be made less pro minent than is usual; and all circumstantial accounts of battles and mance es in the field, beyond leading incidents important for the understanding of the issue, were to be avoided. After examining several of the principal authorities, the design of following any particular author was abandoned, and the present plan adopted, of te-writing and re-arranging the Whole, without regard to the order or language of previous histories. These are the claims of the work to originality. Its merits are submitted to the judgment of the public. The writer has diligently compared the received authorities, and exercised his judgment freely in selecting and arranging the essential facts; and he thinks he has brought within the compass of a volume convenient for popular use, a connected narrative of the revolution, em bracing all the principal events - foreign and domestic. Those portions which relate to the foreign negotiations, are more full in proportion, than the other divisions of the sub ject. They will be found, it is behaved, correct and valuable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic History of the American Revolution To guard against misapprehension, it is proper to say, that in this attempt to present in a new and interesting light the history of our struggle for national existence, there is nothing of fanciful embellishment. I hold in just aversion the to mancing trash under which, at the present day, the simple and picturesque - because simple - realities of our American story seem in danger of being buried. Not only has no aid of fiction been employed, but no traditional matter has been introduced, unless sustained by indisputable authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from France and the American Revolution, 1763-1778: A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of Cornell University for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, June, 1895 At the very time when England was adjusting her nu stable peace with France, the British Ministry were pre paring measures that could not fail to embroil them with the American Colonies and give France an opportunity for mischief. Seven months after the ratification of the treaty of 1763, the proper commissioners were instructed to pre pare a bill imposing a stamp duty on the Colonists. This bill was laid aside for a year, but in the meantime laws were passed to extend the Navigation Acts and modify American imposts.2 The news of these measures roused in tense excitement in the Provinces. Tidings of the discon tent reached France, and Choiseul promptly sent his first secret agent to America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Province of Quebec and the Early American Revolution: A Study in English-American Colonial History The present study was undertaken as one in English co lonial history, and my first thought was closely to investi gate governmental conditions in those parts of North America that did not join in the movement of revolt, not only just before and during the War of Independence, but also for such a period beyond that struggle as might show its more immediate effects on English colonial policy. The claims of other work have required the abandonment of the greater part of this undertaking, and the present publica tion deals only with the Province of Quebec, from its acquisition in 1760 down into the Revolution. As an insti tutional study the investigation ends with the Parliament ary settlement of the constitution of the province by the Quebec Act of 1774; but as a contribution to the history of the American revolution it has gone far enough into the first years of the war to show the main connections of Can ada with that event. These connections seemed to offer an important and unexplored field of investigation, and have therefore been emphasized to a degree not originally in tended. On both sides of my work institutional and revo lutionary, - the Quebec Act becomes the central point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “An elegant synthesis done by the leading scholar in the field, which nicely integrates the work on the American Revolution over the last three decades but never loses contact with the older, classic questions that we have been arguing about for over two hundred years.”—Joseph J. Ellis, author of Founding Brothers A magnificent account of the revolution in arms and consciousness that gave birth to the American republic. When Abraham Lincoln sought to define the significance of the United States, he naturally looked back to the American Revolution. He knew that the Revolution not only had legally created the United States, but also had produced all of the great hopes and values of the American people. Our noblest ideals and aspirations-our commitments to freedom, constitutionalism, the well-being of ordinary people, and equality-came out of the Revolutionary era. Lincoln saw as well that the Revolution had convinced Americans that they were a special people with a special destiny to lead the world toward liberty. The Revolution, in short, gave birth to whatever sense of nationhood and national purpose Americans have had. No doubt the story is a dramatic one: Thirteen insignificant colonies three thousand miles from the centers of Western civilization fought off British rule to become, in fewer than three decades, a huge, sprawling, rambunctious republic of nearly four million citizens. But the history of the American Revolution, like the history of the nation as a whole, ought not to be viewed simply as a story of right and wrong from which moral lessons are to be drawn. It is a complicated and at times ironic story that needs to be explained and understood, not blindly celebrated or condemned. How did this great revolution come about? What was its character? What were its consequences? These are the questions this short history seeks to answer. That it succeeds in such a profound and enthralling way is a tribute to Gordon Wood’s mastery of his subject, and of the historian’s craft.
